Source issue: DYN-4339.

Summary

In a prefill/decode-disaggregated deployment, a request that pinned only the token-generating worker with x-dynamo-worker-instance-id failed with HTTP 500 and the body Pinned worker <id> dp_rank 0 is not eligible: worker <id> is unavailable. The prefill hop resolved its own pin from the generic backend_instance_id field and then looked that decode worker up in a map that holds only prefill-pool workers, so the lookup always missed. Such a request now routes prefill freely and honours the pin at the decode hop.

Details:

The fix is a removal at the two functions that feed the single merged prefill pin. The RequestPhase::Prefill arm of pinned_worker_hint (lib/llm/src/kv_router/routing_host/kv_selection.rs) and of explicit_target (lib/llm/src/session_affinity/coordinator.rs) no longer fall back to backend_instance_id or the generic dp_rank in either function. The Decode and Aggregated arms are untouched, so an aggregated deployment pinned by the same header behaves exactly as before, and pinning a prefill worker still uses prefill_worker_id / x-dynamo-prefill-instance-id.

Four regression tests cover the prefill arms: backend-only hints leave prefill unpinned while decode and aggregated still resolve the pin, and generic dp_rank does not leak into an explicit prefill pin. One existing test, explicit_worker_pin_blocks_migration_for_worker_failures in lib/llm/src/migration.rs, asserted that a backend_instance_id pin blocks migration in all three phases; it now asserts that the pin blocks migration during Aggregated and Decode but not during Prefill, the same shape the sibling test already asserts for decode_worker_id. The nvext field reference is corrected to match.

Where should the reviewer start?

lib/llm/src/kv_router/routing_host/kv_selection.rs and lib/llm/src/session_affinity/coordinator.rs hold the four deleted fallbacks. Then read the rewritten migration test in lib/llm/src/migration.rs — the one pre-existing assertion this change inverts.

Validation

The prior implementation run reported cargo test -p dynamo-llm --lib passing (2693 passed; 0 failed; 5 ignored) on ac93777f8725f5eddd3ff196e21c9838d848a453, including all four new tests and the rewritten migration test. cargo check --workspace --all-targets, cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets --no-deps -- -D warnings, and cargo fmt --all --check are clean. A disaggregated vLLM prefill/decode pair was started on one GPU, and a completion request carrying only x-dynamo-worker-instance-id returned HTTP 200 where it previously returned HTTP 500.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation

    • Clarified how worker-routing hints apply to decode and prefill workers in disaggregated deployments.
    • Documented that decode-worker pinning does not automatically pin prefill workers.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Prefill requests now honor only explicit prefill-worker routing hints.
    • Backend instance pins no longer incorrectly prevent prefill migration or create prefill session-affinity targets.
    • Decode and aggregated routing behavior remains unchanged.
  • Tests

    • Added regression coverage for routing, migration, and session-affinity behavior.

A request that sets only x-dynamo-worker-instance-id — the documented way
to pin the decode worker and let prefill route freely — failed with HTTP
500 in a prefill/decode-disaggregated deployment: the header parser writes
both backend_instance_id and decode_worker_id, and the prefill hop's pin
resolution fell back to backend_instance_id, then looked that decode
worker's id up in the prefill-only worker map and reported
"Pinned worker <id> dp_rank 0 is not eligible: worker <id> is unavailable".

Resolve a prefill pin only from prefill_worker_id, at both sites that feed
the merged prefill pin: pinned_worker_hint in kv_selection.rs and
explicit_target in session_affinity/coordinator.rs. The decode and
aggregated arms keep their own backend_instance_id fallback, so an
aggregated deployment pinned with x-dynamo-worker-instance-id is
unchanged.

Walkthrough

Routing hints now distinguish prefill workers from decode and aggregated workers. Backend-only hints no longer pin prefill routing, session affinity, or migration behavior.

Changes

Phase-specific routing

Layer / File(s) Summary
Phase-specific routing selection
docs/fern/pages/developer-guide/additional-resources/nvidia-request-extensions-nvext.md, lib/llm/src/kv_router/routing_host/kv_selection.rs
Documentation and KV selection now require prefill_worker_id and prefill_dp_rank for prefill pinning. Decode and aggregated phases retain backend and generic DP-rank fallback behavior.
Session affinity target extraction
lib/llm/src/session_affinity/coordinator.rs, lib/llm/src/session_affinity/tests.rs
Prefill explicit targets use only prefill-specific fields. Tests verify backend and generic DP-rank hints remain effective for decode and aggregated phases but not prefill.
Migration phase validation
lib/llm/src/migration.rs
Migration tests now allow prefill migration when only a backend pin is present, while decode and aggregated phases remain blocked.

CI passed. Every check that ran on head ac93777f8725f5eddd3ff196e21c9838d848a453 reached a successful terminal state: 26 passed, 3 skipped, none failing and none pending. One gate is still outside this run: the workflows on NVIDIA's runners have not been scheduled, because copy-pr-bot holds them until a maintainer comments /ok to test ac93777 on this pull request. That comment is the remaining action needed before those jobs can start.

The prefill hop resolved its data-parallel rank as
prefill_dp_rank.or(dp_rank), but dp_rank names the token-generating
worker's rank. A request that pinned a prefill worker with
x-dynamo-prefill-instance-id and also sent x-dynamo-dp-rank therefore
pinned the prefill hop to the decode worker's rank, which is either the
wrong rank or one the prefill worker does not have.

Resolve the prefill rank from prefill_dp_rank alone, matching how
explicit_target already resolves it in the session-affinity coordinator,
so both sites that feed the merged pin agree.

Addressed the review finding on lib/llm/src/kv_router/routing_host/kv_selection.rs — the prefill arm of pinned_worker_hint still resolved its rank as prefill_dp_rank.or(dp_rank), and dp_rank names the token-generating worker's rank. In commit ac93777f8725f5eddd3ff196e21c9838d848a453 that arm resolves routing.prefill_dp_rank alone, matching explicit_target in lib/llm/src/session_affinity/coordinator.rs, so both sites feeding the merged pin now agree. Added pinned_worker_hint_prefill_ignores_decode_dp_rank and session_affinity_prefill_target_ignores_decode_dp_rank, and extended the header note in docs/fern/pages/developer-guide/additional-resources/nvidia-request-extensions-nvext.md.

Checks run on this head:

git diff --check clean
cargo fmt --all --check clean
cargo check --workspace --all-targets no errors
cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets --no-deps -- -D warnings exit 0
cargo test -p dynamo-llm --lib 2693 passed; 0 failed; 5 ignored
pre-commit run --files <the three changed files> no failing hook

🧠 Learnings used
Learnt from: glamr-agent
Repo: ai-dynamo/dynamo

Timestamp: 2026-09-10T23:06:19.593Z
Learning: In the Rust LLM routing protocol, `RoutingHints.dp_rank` and the `x-dynamo-dp-rank` header identify the decode (token-generating) worker rank. `RequestPhase::Prefill` routing must use only `RoutingHints.prefill_worker_id` and `RoutingHints.prefill_dp_rank`; it must not fall back to `backend_instance_id` or `dp_rank`. The corresponding prefill session-affinity target follows the same rule.

nursery: Full CI passed on unchanged head ac93777f8725f5eddd3ff196e21c9838d848a453. The final paginated check rollup contains 71 successful checks and 45 skipped checks, with no failed or pending checks; the separate CodeRabbit status is successful. The full PR workflow, including backend-status-check, dynamo-status-check, and deploy-status-check, completed successfully: https://github.com/ai-dynamo/dynamo/actions/runs/35149806511. Skipped checks are not counted as passes.

This pass verified that the prefill DP-rank finding was already addressed and its thread resolved, confirmed no merge conflicts, corrected stale details in the PR description, and monitored the existing full CI run through completion. No source changes, commits, pushes, local tests, builds, or benchmarks were needed. Existing bot review requests and CI authorization were not repeated.

Human approval remains required. Formal requests through POST /repos/ai-dynamo/dynamo/pulls/14661/requested_reviewers returned HTTP 404 for the router/runtime/docs code-owner teams and for an individual maintainer request; no formal reviewer request was registered. @ishandhanani please arrange the needed code-owner review. The next action is human review; the PR is not yet confirmed merge-ready.
