Two findings from local review. All 169 processor unit tests pass with vLLM 0.28.0; an additional cache-metadata regression check passes on the base revision and fails on this head.

[P2] Preserve earlier backend usage metadata when synthesizing terminal usage. With n=2, one choice can finish naturally and report prompt_tokens_details.cached_tokens=64, then the remaining choice can hit a local string stop without completion_usage on that chunk. Starting from {} here discards the earlier cache metadata; the non-streaming DeltaAggregator then replaces its previous usage with this incomplete object. Reproduced with the real vLLM 0.28.0 output processor: the base retains cached_tokens=64, while this head's final usage omits prompt_tokens_details. Retain the latest backend usage per request and use it as the basis for corrected terminal totals, with coverage for natural-finish-before-local-stop ordering.

Fixed in da32008. The request now retains its latest backend usage before processing choices and copies it when synthesizing terminal totals. Added the natural-finish-before-local-stop ordering with real vLLM 0.28.0: it fails on the previous head and now preserves cached_tokens=64 and backend prompt_tokens=128 while correcting completion/total tokens. All 170 frontend unit tests pass, as do the focused HTTP/etcd/TCP/ZMQ integration test and applicable pre-commit hooks.
Update (2026-10-15, 75f94e8d79 on abc1952924): the earlier-backend-usage regression still preserves cached_tokens=64 and backend prompt_tokens=128 while correcting completion/total tokens. All 225 processor tests pass with vLLM 0.31.0 and bindings built from the current checkout. The same production comparison against current main fails all five local-stop cases; the real HTTP/etcd/TCP/ZMQ test preserves terminal usage and [DONE] across both requests.

[P3] Add a test-level timeout. This new pre-merge integration test launches subprocesses, waits for service readiness, and consumes two HTTP streams, but has no pytest.mark.timeout or module-level equivalent. requests.post(timeout=60) limits socket inactivity, not total test duration or fixture teardown. Add an explicit pytest timeout based on the measured runtime, as required by .ai/pytest-guidelines.md for network/subprocess tests.

Added pytest.mark.timeout(90) in da32008. The measured setup/call/teardown totals were 24.92s on the first successful run and 14.77s on the warm rerun; 90s gives roughly 3x the cold run, rounded up. The integration test passes with this timeout, including both HTTP requests and fixture teardown.
Update (2026-10-15, 75f94e8d79): pytest.mark.timeout(90) remains in place. With current source-built bindings, both HTTP requests and fixture teardown pass in 15.46s (9.13s setup, 0.44s call, 1.84s teardown). The token worker loads no GPU inference model.

Rebased onto current With vLLM 0.31.0 and freshly rebuilt native bindings, all 214 processor unit tests, the HTTP/etcd/TCP/ZMQ regression (two consecutive requests), and applicable pre-commit hooks pass. Current-main comparisons reproduce the five processor failures and missing terminal HTTP usage. The integration uses the existing token worker without loading a GPU inference model. Summary
When the Python vLLM frontend matches a string stop, it ignores
OutputProcessor.reqs_to_abortand keeps reading the backend stream after its choices finish. This can discard terminal usage and count late tokens from stopped choices.Emit the terminal response and release the routed stream once all choices belonging to this request finish. Count tokens while choices are active and retain the latest backend prompt/cache metadata when correcting terminal totals. Sibling choices and unrelated requests sharing the output processor remain active.

Current follow-up (2026-10-15), with vLLM 0.31.0 and Rust/Python bindings built from this checkout (
abc1952924baseline); both Python packages are installed from source at version 1.6.0:python -m pytest components/src/dynamo/frontend/tests/test_vllm_processor_unit.py -q: 225 passed.python -m pytest tests/frontend/test_vllm_prepost_integration.py -k local_stop_preserves_stream_terminal --models-dir=<local-tokenizer-cache> --durations=0 -q: 1 passed in 15.46 seconds, including both HTTP requests and teardown under the 90-second test timeout. This exercises real HTTP/etcd/TCP/ZMQ with the token worker and loads no GPU inference model. NIXL transport is not exercised; the native build uses its default stub fallback for the unavailable NIXL library.pre-commitand DCO hooks: passed.Per-choice backend cancellation while other choices remain active is outside this change. The shared routed stream is released when all request choices finish.
