Why and what changed

Allow operators to build, smoke-test, and stage an approved main/release source SHA through a manual dispatch from main. Validate both source SHA and ref, use current license tooling against the selected manifest, and retain verified wheel/checksum/provenance artifacts. Manual runs require approval for the current attempt and remain staging-only, avoiding collisions with immutable public nightly versions. Scheduled deduplication and license-difference baselines consider only successful scheduled runs.

Review map

  • Risk level: medium.
  • Start with .github/workflows/nightly-ci.yml: target ancestry, current-tooling/selected-source checkout, approval attempts, source ref/SHA provenance, and schedule-only FPE/publication/baseline lookup. Tests execute the actual embedded scripts and artifact consumer.
  • Public or serialized contract changed: optional workflow_dispatch.commit_sha; provenance ref and commit identify the selected source. check_python_licenses.py accepts --pyproject. CLI/package APIs are unchanged.
  • Compatibility or rollback concern: dispatch from main; old release sources need their package manifest, not current validation tools. Manual builds are not publicly published or FPE-qualified. Reverting removes the dispatch feature without changing scheduled artifact consumers.

Evidence

Reviewed head: 295c03a5d0c88a8b72f0fb446d51cded53431b9a, based on merged main cab26cb0. Manual and retried runs now require current-attempt approval before dependency installation on production runners; scheduled first attempts still run unattended.

  • Tests: python -m pytest -c pytest.ini -p no:timeout tests/test_ci_workflow_contracts.py tests/test_ci_qualification.py tests/test_release_fpe.py tests/test_pages_site.py -q — 309 passed, 132 subtests passed. node --test tests/test_e2e_accuracy_workflow.mjs — 12 passed. Actionlint, Ruff, and git diff --check pass.
  • Fast CI: passed on the current head (run 35255683594).
  • Full CI: run 35257770522 passed on trusted branch pull-request/251, whose SHA exactly matches reviewed head 295c03a. All 54 validation jobs succeeded; only Stage Application Wheel was expectedly skipped for the PR. Admitted after Fast CI, CodeRabbit, and Codex review passed.
  • CodeRabbit reviewed commit: 295c03a; completed with minimal merge risk and no remaining actionable finding. The review confirmed both the scheduled-only license baseline and current-attempt dependency-installation approval gates.
  • Codex reviewed commit: 295c03a against main cab26cb; approved with no remaining actionable finding.
  • Negative or boundary cases: invalid/unreachable SHAs, unsupported dispatch refs, API errors, stale approvals, cancellation, failed inputs, manual publication, source ref/SHA preservation, and rejection of manual artifacts by scheduled accuracy consumers.
  • Expected-value derivation: unchanged scheduled inventories must produce an empty dependency diff even when a newer manual inventory contains different versions.
  • Before/after output: the baseline regression reproduced four spurious dependency changes before the fix and zero after it. Provenance now records a validated release ref instead of the main dispatch ref for release-only targets.

Modeling or data provenance

No predictive models, formulas, or performance data change. Build provenance records validated source SHA/ref, workflow ref, event, and artifact checksums. Fixtures test these contracts; they do not certify a live scheduled nightly or public publication.

Remove the nightly-dist uploads — Artifactory is the only channel.
FPE builds its own qualification wheel at the same SHA, and e2e
accuracy always builds from source. Also override the implicit
success() on license-evidence and fpe-support-matrix so the approval
job skipped on scheduled runs cannot cascade and skip the GitLab
trigger.
workflow_dispatch takes an optional commit_sha, defaulting to the tip
of the branch the run is started from. The guard job, which holds no
secrets, checks that the commit is actually on main or a release/*
branch before anything builds, and that check also covers the default
tip — you cannot sneak in a feature branch by leaving the input empty.
The skip-if-unchanged logic now only looks at earlier cron runs, so a
manual run cannot trick the next night's cron into skipping. Manual
runs still wait for manual-release-approver sign-off.

ai-dynamo/dynamo

  • Public nightly selectors only accept immutable YYYYMMDD-<sha> tags from *-runtime-nightly repositories. Manual staging artifacts must not be published into this namespace. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::] docs/fern/scripts/gen_nightly_selector.py:178-190,368-376
  • Helm nightly preparation independently validates dated chart/image tags (X.Y.Z-dev.YYYYMMDD.gSHA7 and YYYYMMDD-sha7). The PR’s staging-only manual path is compatible with this contract. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::] .github/scripts/prepare_nightly_helm.py:164-186

ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator

  • Generated Dynamo deployments use generator_dynamo_version as both the release/version value and default runtime image tag, rather than an arbitrary source commit SHA. [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::] src/aiconfigurator/generator/config/deployment_config.yaml:54-88
  • Tests explicitly verify that the configured Dynamo version becomes the runtime image tag. Selected manual-build SHAs should therefore remain provenance/source identity, not be exposed as released Dynamo versions. [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::] tests/unit/generator/test_naive.py:182-192
  • Documentation describes the option as selecting a Dynamo release (for example 0.7.1). [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::] docs/generator_overview.md:95-100

📝 Summary

Risk: Medium

Human attention should focus on:

  1. SHA validation and source/tooling checkout for main and release/*.
  2. Current-attempt approval and manual publication gates.
  3. Scheduled-only deduplication, license baselines, and artifact handoff.

Changed behavior and contracts

  • Manual dispatch accepts an optional full commit_sha.
  • The selected SHA must resolve to main or release/*.
  • Downstream jobs use the selected SHA and source ref.
  • Manual retries require approval for the current run attempt.
  • Manual runs skip FPE qualification and GitLab publication.
  • Manual artifacts remain staging evidence and cannot serve scheduled consumers.
  • Scheduled deduplication and license baselines use successful scheduled runs only.
  • check_licenses and its CLI accept an optional pyproject path.

Evidence supplied

  • Contract tests cover approval states, cancellation, SHA propagation, source/tooling checkout, provenance, checksums, artifact handoff, license baselines, and publication restrictions.
  • End-to-end tests cover SHA and ref selection, release ancestry, API failures, and scheduled-build suppression.
  • The supplied validation summary reports Python and Node tests, actionlint, Ruff, whitespace checks, and boundary-case coverage.
  • Fast CI and Codex review are reported as passed.
  • Review severity counts and direct test logs were not supplied. Their values are unavailable.
  • Bot review activity does not constitute approval.

Technical quality

The workflow propagates the validated source identity through compliance, builds, provenance, and staging. It separates manual staging from scheduled qualification and publication. Regression coverage addresses the reported license-baseline and approval-gate defects.

Merge readiness

Merge readiness is not established. Confirm current-head CI results, required CODEOWNER approval, and branch protection checks before merging.

Walkthrough

The nightly workflow adds validated manual SHA selection, separates scheduled deduplication from manual builds, propagates the resolved SHA through compliance and artifacts, restricts qualification and publishing by event, and expands workflow and license-check tests.

Changes

Nightly CI target flow

Layer / File(s) Summary
Target resolution and deduplication
.github/workflows/nightly-ci.yml, tests/test_e2e_accuracy_workflow.mjs
Manual dispatches validate a full commit SHA reachable from main or release/*. Scheduled deduplication checks only successful scheduled runs for the same SHA. Tests cover SHA selection, ancestry, API failures, and suppression rules.
Resolved source execution and publication gates
.github/workflows/nightly-ci.yml, docs/ci.md, tests/test_ci_workflow_contracts.py
Compliance, builds, provenance, and security inputs use the resolved SHA. FPE qualification and GitLab security triggering are restricted to eligible scheduled runs. Contract tests cover approvals, source checkout, provenance, concurrency, license baselines, and manual-run exclusions. Documentation describes both paths.
License manifest selection
scripts/check_python_licenses.py, tests/test_ci_workflow_contracts.py
The license checker accepts an optional --pyproject path and otherwise uses the default manifest. Tests cover both selection modes.

Reviewed this dispatch change separately from its inherited #250 commit. The SHA guard correctly rejects malformed and off-branch targets, but supported release checkouts and repeated dated publication need the corrections below. The inherited #250 artifact findings are tracked on #250 and will be carried forward here. The workflow-contract helper also needs explicit coverage for the new startsWith/manual conditions; its current NameError fails Fast CI.

Fresh Codex review at 0f63754 against current main c3cc310: no remaining actionable issue in the five-file diff. Followed target selection through current-tooling/selected-manifest license checks, target-pinned build/provenance, verified artifact retention, approval attempts, schedule-only FPE/publication, and downstream Pages/accuracy consumers. All four original findings across #250/#251 are fixed on the remote heads and their threads resolved. Validation: 28 targeted Python tests, 12 actual-workflow Node tests, actionlint/Ruff/whitespace checks pass. A clean test integration with current #241 ef70c3d passes 304 Python tests plus 132 subtests under warnings-as-errors. This PR still depends on #241 for the pre-existing application-contract failures and on #250's artifact handoff correction. Current-head CodeRabbit and Full CI remain required; no merge-readiness claim or approval bypass.

Technical approval of the final five-file change at 0f63754. Both reported issues are fixed and resolved: current tooling checks the selected source manifest, and approved manual builds stay in run-specific staging without FPE/public-publication claims. Target validation, stale-approval rejection, schedule-only publication, provenance, and consumer tests pass; current Fast CI and Pages validation are green. The integrated tree with #241 passes 304 tests plus 132 subtests. Merge remains gated on #241 then #250, refreshed branch evidence, and completed current-head CodeRabbit/Full CI. This is a code-review approval, not a waiver of those gates.

Fresh Codex review and approval at 4181b16 after integrating merged #241 and current #250. Verified target SHA/ref validation and provenance wiring, current license tooling with selected-source manifests, six-way license inventory compatibility, per-attempt approval, manual staging/publication boundaries, and artifact consumers. The CodeRabbit source-ref finding is fixed and resolved; no remaining actionable finding. Validation: 306 Python tests plus 132 subtests under root warnings-as-errors, 12 actual-workflow Node tests, actionlint, Ruff, and whitespace checks pass. Current-head CodeRabbit/Fast/Full CI remain required before merge, after #250 lands.

Exclude manual runs from the scheduled license baseline.

license-evidence also runs after successful manual dispatches. prior_deps() queries all successful main runs, skips only the current run, and can read a manual run's license-artifacts. A later scheduled run can therefore compare against an unrelated release SHA.

Return no prior baseline for manual runs. Add event=schedule to the query.

ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator

  • Dynamo recipe provenance accepts and preserves a source_reference, with documentation recommending full-commit URLs (docs/config_adapter.md:73; src/aiconfigurator/sdk/config_adapter/dynamo.py:53-56,1079-1083). This is compatible with manual nightly runs selecting a full source SHA. [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::]
  • Generator compatibility is keyed to released generator_dynamo_version values, not nightly workflow inputs (src/aiconfigurator/generator/api.py:646-723; src/aiconfigurator/generator/facts/runtimes/dynamo.yaml). Manual staging artifacts should therefore not alter the released version mapping. [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::]

ai-dynamo/dynamo

  • Nightly consumers are documented as using dated wheel versions and immutable YYYYMMDD-<shortsha> container tags, with latest floating (docs/fern/pages/reference/general/nightly-releases.md:25-38,56-64). The manual-run behavior described in the PR is staging-only and does not change this public nightly artifact contract. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::]

Confirmed the current CodeRabbit review summary's remaining baseline issue: license-evidence's prior_deps() query filters branch/status but not event. A successful manual build of a release source, dispatched from main, can therefore replace the scheduled main baseline and produce unrelated added/removed dependencies in the next scheduled report. I am adding event=schedule to that query and a regression fixture with a newer manual inventory. The current Full CI run will be superseded by the corrected head.

Fresh review at 0660cb1: the scheduled-license baseline query now excludes successful workflow_dispatch runs. The new fixture reproduces four spurious added/removed dependency rows before the fix and zero after it, using a newer manual inventory with different versions. All 307 Python tests plus 132 subtests pass under warnings-as-errors; actionlint and Ruff pass. The previous source-ref finding remains fixed, and the 12 workflow-script tests cover target validation and scheduled/manual boundaries. No remaining actionable issue in the current diff; current-head automated review and Full CI remain required before merge.

Fresh approval at 44b3bf3 against merged main dfa8a1f. Resolved the squash-history overlap by retaining the scheduled-only FPE gate. git diff 0660cb1..44b3bf3 is empty: this head has the identical tree that passed 307 Python tests, 132 subtests, actionlint, and Ruff; the workflow-script suite has 12 passing tests. Re-read the final five-file diff against current main: validated SHA/ref provenance, current-source license checks, scheduled-only deduplication and license baselines, manual approval/staging boundaries, and actual artifact consumer regressions remain correct. CodeRabbit reviewed 0660cb1 with no actionable issues and minimal risk; exact new-head automated review and Full CI still must complete before merging.

Gate python-compliance on the current manual approval.

python-compliance depends only on changes-guard, and workflow_dispatch sets should-build to true. Its six matrix jobs can therefore start before manual-approval succeeds.

Add manual-approval to needs and require either scheduled attempt 1 or successful approval for the current attempt:

needs: [changes-guard, manual-approval]
if: >-
  !cancelled() &&
  needs.changes-guard.outputs.should-build == 'true' &&
  ((github.event_name == 'schedule' && github.run_attempt == '1') ||
  (needs.manual-approval.result == 'success' &&
  needs.manual-approval.outputs.approved-attempt == github.run_attempt))

Extend the workflow contract tests to cover python-compliance before and after approval.

Confirmed the latest review summary's approval-gate concern at 44b3bf3: python-compliance depends only on changes-guard and can install the selected source's runtime dependencies on production runners while manual-approval is still waiting. I am adding the current-attempt approval prerequisite to compliance, using an explicit status predicate so scheduled first attempts continue through the intentionally skipped approval job. Regression coverage will exercise waiting/stale/current approvals, scheduled retries, cancellation, and disabled builds before refreshed review/CI.

Fresh review at 7a30248: python-compliance now depends on manual-approval and checks the approved current attempt before installing dependencies on production runners. Its explicit !cancelled() predicate preserves scheduled first-attempt execution when approval is intentionally skipped. The approval state-machine tests now cover compliance alongside builds/publishing, including stale/current approvals, retries, cancellation, and disabled builds. All 309 Python tests plus 132 subtests pass under warnings-as-errors; actionlint, Ruff, and whitespace checks pass. Rechecked the complete manual path: only source-validation API work and the approval gate run before compliance; artifact build/staging follows successful compliance. No remaining actionable finding. Current-head automated review and Full CI remain required.

Codex review refreshed for 295c03a against main cab26cb. The latest merge adds only the already-reviewed upstream Planner installation documentation; workflow, scripts, tests, and docs/ci.md are byte-identical to the tested approval-gate fix at 7a30248. All manual dependency installation on production runners now waits for current-attempt approval; scheduled first attempts remain unblocked. Local strict validation: 309 tests and 132 subtests passed, 12 embedded-workflow Node tests passed, Actionlint/Ruff/whitespace checks passed. No remaining actionable findings in the reviewed changes. Current-head CodeRabbit review and terminal Full CI remain merge gates.
