What?

Closes #81057. Supersedes #81073.

Makes the schema accept the block-level states WordPress already supports: :hover, :focus, :focus-visible, :active on core/button and core/navigation-link, -current on core/navigation-link, and elements on core/button.

Why?

The rules appeared to be already in the schema but never applied.

Every core block is listed under properties and was also matched by a generic patternProperties fallback; JSON Schema applies both, and the fallback's propertyNames rejected the extra keys. An allOf member can only narrow a key set, never widen it.

How?

  • Fallback moves from patternProperties to additionalProperties, which only applies to blocks not listed under properties. A propertyNames pattern still rejects malformed block names.
  • -current no longer pulls in stylesPropertiesComplete, so a nested :hover validates.
  • core/navigation-link and core/button declare their own key sets, at block and style-variation level.

Testing Instructions

npm run test:unit -- test/integration/theme-schema.test.js

New fixture test/integration/fixtures/theme-json/block-states/theme.json is rejected on trunk and accepted here. Six expected-invalid fixtures keep asserting these states are refused on blocks that don't support them.

To check in an editor, drop this in a theme.json and open it your editor. Example assumes you're testing locally in this repo. Swap the $schema for https://schemas.wp.org/trunk/theme.json to compare.

All the following are valid:

{
	"$schema": "../../schemas/json/theme.json",
	"version": 3,
	"styles": {
		"elements": {
			"link": {
				":hover": { "color": { "text": "#005177" } },
				":visited": { "color": { "text": "#663399" } }
			},
			"button": {
				":hover": { "color": { "background": "#005177" } }
			}
		},
		"blocks": {
			"core/button": {
				"color": { "background": "#0073aa" },
				":hover": { "color": { "background": "#005177" } },
				":focus-visible": { "outline": { "width": "2px" } },
				"elements": { "link": { "color": { "text": "currentColor" } } },
				"@mobile": { ":hover": { "color": { "background": "red" } } },

					"outline": {
						":hover": { "color": { "text": "red" } },
						"@mobile": { ":hover": { "color": { "text": "red" } } },

			},
			"core/navigation-link": {
				":hover": { "color": { "text": "#005177" } },
				"-current": {
					"color": { "text": "#0073aa" },
					":hover": { "color": { "text": "#005177" } }
				},
				"@tablet": { ":hover": { "color": { "text": "red" } } },
				"variations": {

These examples should contain invalid entries:

{

	"version": 3,
	"styles": {
		"blocks": {
			"core/paragraph": {
				":hover": { "color": { "text": "red" } },

				"variations": { "outline": { "colour": {} } }
			},
			"core/navigation": {

				"-current": { "@mobile": { "color": { "text": "red" } } }
			}
		}
	}
}

Expected: no warnings on core/button or core/navigation-link, and :hover under core/paragraph still flagged, since that block has no pseudo-class support.

ramonjd added 2 commits August 5, 2026 16:56
Every core block is listed under `properties` and was also matched by a
`patternProperties` fallback. JSON Schema applies both applicators to a
key that matches both, and the fallback restricts `propertyNames` to
plain style properties, so the per-block allowances for `:hover`,
`:focus`, `:focus-visible`, `:active` and `-current` could never take
effect. An `allOf` member can only narrow the set of allowed keys, never
widen it.

Move the fallback to `additionalProperties`, which applies only to keys
that are not listed under `properties`, and keep a `propertyNames`
pattern so malformed block names are still rejected. Because all core
blocks are enumerated, nothing has to be kept in sync when a block gains
support for a new state.

Three definitions were composed the same way and are fixed too:

- `stylesBlocksCustomStatesProperties` pulled in
  `stylesPropertiesComplete`, so `:hover` inside `-current` was
  rejected. It now states its own key set.
- `core/navigation-link` had `stylesPropertiesAndElementsComplete` as
  its first `allOf` member, which rejected its pseudo-classes and
  `-current`. It now composes the parts and states its own key set, at
  both block and variation level.
- `core/button` stopped accepting `elements` when its bespoke definition
  replaced the shared one. Restored at both levels.

Fixes #81057
… schema

`theme-schema.test.js` had no fixture that used a block-level state, which
is why the schema shipped twice with `:hover` and `-current` unusable and
CI stayed green. It validates every `theme.json` found under `test/` as
expected-valid, so a fixture there is picked up without changing the test.

Add `fixtures/theme-json/block-states/theme.json` covering the four
pseudo-classes on `core/button` and `core/navigation-link`, `-current` on
`core/navigation-link` with a nested `:hover`, `elements`, `variations`
and `@mobile` on both, and the same states under
`styles.variations.<name>.blocks`. This file is rejected by the schema as
it stands on trunk, so it guards the fix rather than describing it.

For the expected-invalid fixtures, keep asserting that these states are
refused where they are not supported:

- `core/paragraph` with `:hover`
- a third-party block with `:hover`, which reaches the fallback through
  `additionalProperties`
- `core/navigation-link` with an unregistered `-other` state
- `-current` holding a key that is not a style property or pseudo-class
- a `blocks` key that is not a valid block name
- `core/paragraph` with `:hover` inside a style variation

Two existing fixtures used `core/button`, which no longer reaches the
generic fallback they are named after. Point them at `core/paragraph` so
they exercise that definition again.

Note for a follow up:

blocks.["some/block"]["@mobile"].elements is rejected by the schema although sanitize adds it (:1320) and get_block_nodes() emits nodes for it (:3726-3731).

That's related to the responsive-states feature, not pseudo/-current, and it touches all blocks. Should we handle that separately?

…ations

Sanitization adds a supported block's pseudo-selectors to its responsive
breakpoint states and to its block-local style variations
(lib/class-wp-theme-json-gutenberg.php:1322-1326 and :1376-1393), and CSS
is generated for both (:3648 onward, :3847, :3897). The schema rejected
them:

- `styles.blocks.core/navigation-link.variations.<name>[":hover"]`
- `styles.blocks.<block>["@mobile"][":hover"]` for both supported blocks
- the same paths under `styles.variations.<name>.blocks`

Add three definitions shared by `core/button` and `core/navigation-link`:
style properties plus pseudo-selectors, a pseudo-aware responsive state
map, and a variations map carrying the block's responsive states and
pseudo-selectors. The generic definitions are untouched, so
`core/paragraph` still rejects all of it.

`-current` stays rejected inside variations. The variation loop never
reads VALID_BLOCK_CUSTOM_STATES, so WordPress strips it there, and the
schema should not advertise it.

`core/button` style variations accept `elements` and `blocks` again. The
bespoke definition added in #71418 dropped both, which the generic
block-local variation schema has always allowed.

The changes themselves look sensible, I just don't understand the tests 😅

One thought, not for now though: at some point we'll want to allow third party blocks to add support for pseudo styles; is there a semantic way to reflect that in the schema? Like: this feature exists for any blocks that declare support for it?

After this PR core/button no longer reaches the stylesPropertiesAndElementsComplete definition.

On trunk core/button was validated twice: by its own entry under properties, and again by the generic patternProperties fallback, which is stylesPropertiesAndElementsComplete.

That double validation is the bug being fixed here.

I let Claude have at it again, and it identified a gap though thanks to your question:

stylesBlocksResponsiveSelectorsWithPseudoProperties.json (rejects :visited under @mobile) and stylesVariationPropertiesComplete.json (rejects a bad key inside a button variation), but nothing now asserts that an unknown key sitting directly on core/button is rejected, which is what this fixture used to do.

I can add stylesBlocksPropertiesComplete_button.json to cover it:

{
	"$schema": "../../../../schemas/json/theme.json",
	"version": 3,
	"styles": {
		"blocks": {
			"core/button": {
				"invalidAdditionalProperty": true
			}

I assume this and the below are the invalid test cases? Whereabouts are we asserting their invalidity? Not sure I understand how these tests work 😅

Fair question. I had no idea that these tests even existed before yesterday 😄

Invalidity assertions are made over in https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/blob/trunk/test/integration/theme-schema.test.js#L17

So creating a file in fixtures/schemas/ is the "assertion" that it's invalid.

test/integration/README.md isn't much help - it has one line "Validates all theme.json files in the repo against the JSON schema", which is, by all standards, unhelpful.

I could probably spin up another PR to expand that.

`stylesPropertiesAndElementsComplete.json` used `core/button` to check that
the generic block definition rejects unknown keys. `core/button` no longer
reaches that definition, so the fixture was pointed at `core/paragraph` and
nothing was left covering an unknown key sitting directly on `core/button`.

Add a fixture for it. It fails at
`#/properties/core~1button/allOf/4/propertyNames`, which is the block's own
key list.

`core/button` and `core/navigation-link` take their breakpoints from
`stylesBlocksResponsiveSelectorsWithPseudoProperties`, added in #81209,
rather than from the generic definition this branch widened. Its
breakpoint body carried pseudo-selectors but no `elements`, so those two
blocks were left as the only blocks that could not style an element
inside `@mobile` or `@tablet`, which the runtime renders for every block.

Point its breakpoints at a new definition carrying style properties,
`elements` and the block's pseudo-selectors.

`stylesBlocksPropertiesAndPseudoComplete` is deliberately untouched, even
though it looks like the obvious place to add `elements`. It is also the
body of `-current`, and custom states have no element support: WordPress
renders nothing for `core/navigation-link["-current"].elements`. A
fixture pins that down.

The valid fixture gains `core/button` and `core/navigation-link` cases at
block level, inside a block style variation, and inside a shared style
variation, covering all five reference sites of the definition.
