This was extra tricky because for a while I thought it was just a bug with aw. As usual, I solved the problem after I stepped away from it for about 5 seconds. :P

This PR encompasses @darrenweston's awesome work on the testing infrastructure. I also fixed the three bugs that he managed to find while adding new tests.
