Why not MIT license ? #679
-
I see that you changed your license to MIT to a custom one at some point, and I was wondering: What led you to change the license ? I am not here to start an argument or anything, I am just genuinely curious about why you (and many mods !) chose to go with a custom license, and in your case what the actual differences are with the MIT Thanks ! |

Waystones got too popular. People were using the name and models to make commercial bedrock versions as well as spinoff mods that ended up causing recurring confusion amongst users who came to me to report issues or ask questions about projects I had nothing to do with. This also caused issues when I went and made an official Fabric port, since someone had already made a spinoff called "Fabric Waystones", which ironically led to my "Waystones (Fabric Edition)" project initially being rejected by CurseForge moderation, as the name was too similar to "Fabric Waystones". Similarly, I imagine it will cause issues should I ever make an official Bedrock version, either in terms of user confusion or marketplace moderation. Now as far as I know, neither MIT nor ARR actually protects the name, but the mod hosting platforms out there are far more strict about ARR moderation and would therefore prevent usage of an established name by a third party. Meanwhile, I do not feel like I ever really reaped any benefits of my mods being open-source. It makes sense for me to stay visible-source for compatibility purposes (it's very useful to look at another mod's source when you're trying to make something compatible or tracking down a bug) and I have no issue at all with people learning from my code or taking snippets for their own mod. I just want to deter people from making large-scale or commercial use of my work without ever speaking to me at all. |
