Why are lining numerals default in the original file but not on Google Fonts? #523

It seems Merriweather has lining numerals as a default. But for some reason, in Google Fonts, old style numerals are used as a default.

This is a shame, because Google Fonts strips non-default styles and we are stuck with old style numerals.

  • When I create a webfont from the original font file, lining numerals are default.

  • When I use Google Fonts, old style numerals are default and I can't even change it with CSS (font-variant-numeric: lining-nums;) because Google Fonts strips the non-default lining numerals.

Why is the version used in Google Fonts different and would it be possible to make the lining numerals default in the Google Fonts version?

We have been on the verge of pushing for just what you are asking for ( lining numerals as default) in the new version for quite a while. I hope that next week we will finally make it live.

@EbenSorkin

May I ask you which one of the 6pt, 12pt, 60pt, 96pt or 144pt is corresponding to the font available at Google Fonts (if there is one) ?

Kind Regards
