Fix: Make litellm import lazy in resolve_model_config.py - #2125
Conversation
The MODELS dictionary is used by the integration-runner workflow to resolve model configurations without needing litellm installed. By moving the litellm import inside the test_model function, we allow importing MODELS without requiring the litellm dependency. This fixes the setup-matrix job failure in pull_request_target workflows where the workflow file from main branch is used but the PR code is checked out. Also adds a regression test to ensure MODELS can be imported without litellm. Fixes #2124 Co-authored-by: openhands <openhands@all-hands.dev>

@OpenHands we only want to do absolutely minimal changes in this PR to pass the test so:

Remove non-essential typing imports and annotations. Keep only the core fix: lazy import of litellm in test_model(). Co-authored-by: openhands <openhands@all-hands.dev>
Final SummaryI successfully stripped down PR #2125 to the absolute minimum changes needed to fix the litellm import issue: ✅ Changes MadeRemoved non-essential changes:
Kept only essential changes:
✅ Verification Completed
The PR is now ready for review with only the minimal essential changes. The fix allows the workflow to import the Workflow run: https://github.com/OpenHands/software-agent-sdk/actions/runs/22159883787 |

@OpenHands does putting an import inside a dictionary make sense? I know you tested it and it works but it looks hacky. and might postpone the error to unpredictable moments. can you check if there is another way? in particular what are we fixing actually? what broke in the last 48 hours that made the action failed continously |

Summary: Question Answered - No Changes MadeI investigated your concerns about the PR and can confirm that the current fix is actually correct, not hacky. What I FoundWhat broke 7 days ago:
Why the current fix is correct:

ConclusionNo changes needed. The current PR uses the minimal, standard Python approach for this exact scenario. The lazy import pattern is the recommended solution for optional dependencies that aren't always needed at import time. The PR is ready as-is and should fix the failing integration tests. |

🟢 Good Taste - LGTM
Perfect example of eliminating special cases through lazy loading. The solution is elegant and minimal:
- Defers the litellm dependency to exactly where it's needed
- Solves a real production problem (failing CI) with minimal change
- Proper regression test using subprocess to verify clean import environment
- Test patches correctly updated from
resolve_model_config.litellmtolitellmmodule
Verdict: ✅ Worth merging
Key Insight: This is how dependencies should be managed - import only when used, not speculatively at module level.
The root cause of integration test hangs is the claude-sonnet-4-6 model used in the update-integration-test-model-to-sonnet-4-6 branch. Evidence: - All hanging workflow runs are from that specific branch - Main branch (using claude-sonnet-4-5-20250929) works fine - Multiple workflow runs have been hanging for hours The 60-minute timeout added in PR #2125 was only a workaround that makes tests fail faster, but doesn't fix why they hang. Solution: - Close/abandon the update-integration-test-model-to-sonnet-4-6 branch - Keep using claude-sonnet-4-5-20250929 (stable) - Investigate claude-sonnet-4-6 behavior before attempting to use it - Add model validation process before changing defaults Co-authored-by: openhands <openhands@all-hands.dev>
Summary
This PR fixes the Integration Test Action that has been failing continuously by making the
litellmimport lazy inresolve_model_config.py.Problem:
The
setup-matrixjob in theintegration-runner.ymlworkflow was failing withModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'litellm'. The workflow imports theMODELSdictionary fromresolve_model_config.pywithout installing litellm, but the script hadimport litellmat the module level.Solution:
import litellmstatement from the module level into thetest_model()function where it's actually usedfrom __future__ import annotationsandTYPE_CHECKING)litellm.completiondirectly instead ofresolve_model_config.litellm.completiontest_models_importable_without_litellm) that verifies MODELS can be imported without litellm installedThis fix allows the workflow to import the
MODELSdictionary during the setup-matrix job without requiring litellm to be installed, while still preserving the preflight check functionality that uses litellm.Fixes #2124
