Summary

Consolidate duplicate type aliases with centralized types for consistency and maintainability.

  • Replace LogContextValue with EnvValue (identical semantics)
  • Replace PayloadDataValue with CliValue | None (equivalent)
  • Rename local ParameterValue → QueryParameterValue (different semantics - allows None, no dict)
  • Rename local ConfigValue → ScalarConfigValue (narrower semantics - scalars only)
  • Add documentation comment noting narrower variants exist
  • Remove broken EnumValidationSeverity import (file didn't exist, was blocking tests)

Resolution Strategy

Type Alias Resolution
LogContextValue True duplicate → replaced with EnvValue
PayloadDataValue True duplicate → replaced with CliValue | None
ParameterValue Semantically different → renamed to QueryParameterValue
ConfigValue Semantically different → renamed to ScalarConfigValue

True duplicates are replaced with centralized imports. Semantically different types are renamed to preserve their intent and avoid name collisions.

Test plan

  • mypy passes on all affected files
  • pyright passes on all affected files
  • 122 unit tests pass
  • All pre-commit hooks pass

Closes OMN-1294

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Refactor
    • Streamlined public API surface by removing and renaming several exposed type aliases for clarity.
    • Standardized value types: payloads, query parameters, and configuration defaults now use narrower, clearer scalar/value representations.
    • Typing improvements only—no runtime behavior or validation logic changes.

✏️ Tip: You can customize this high-level summary in your review settings.

79-94: Consider adding symmetric bool exclusion for int type.

The special check at lines 87-90 correctly prevents int/float values from matching "bool" type. However, the reverse case isn't handled: validate_config_value_type("int", True) will pass silently because isinstance(True, int) returns True in Python.

The relevant code snippet in model_extension_data.py notes "Must check bool before int!" suggesting this asymmetry is known. If strict type separation is desired:

♻️ Optional: Add symmetric bool exclusion
     expected = type_map[value_type]
     # Strict bool check - don't allow int/float to match bool

🔇 Additional comments (8)
src/omnibase_core/models/configuration/model_config_types.py (4)

1-36: LGTM! Comprehensive and well-structured module documentation.

The docstring clearly explains the module's purpose, distinguishes ScalarConfigValue from the broader ConfigValue, and provides useful examples and cross-references. Good adherence to the guideline of explaining "WHY" rather than restating method names.

40-49: LGTM! Clean type definitions with proper documentation.

Good distinction between the static VALID_VALUE_TYPES Literal for type checking and the runtime _VALID_TYPE_NAMES tuple for validation. The comments clearly explain the naming rationale.

52-64: LGTM!

Correct TypeGuard implementation enabling mypy to understand the type refinement. The docstring appropriately explains the type narrowing behavior.

97-102: LGTM!

Explicit __all__ correctly exports all public symbols while keeping _VALID_TYPE_NAMES private.

src/omnibase_core/infrastructure/node_config_provider.py (4)

13-17: LGTM!

Import correctly updated to use ScalarConfigValue from the configuration module's re-export path.

72-93: LGTM!

Type annotations for _DEFAULTS and _config_cache correctly narrowed to ScalarConfigValue. All default values (int, float, bool, str) align with the narrower type.

122-124: LGTM!

Method signatures consistently updated to use ScalarConfigValue | None following PEP 604 union syntax as required by coding guidelines.

227-234: LGTM!

Return type correctly narrowed to dict[str, ScalarConfigValue], consistent with _config_cache type annotation.

Code Review: Type Alias Consolidation (OMN-1294)

Summary

This PR successfully consolidates duplicate type aliases and improves type consistency across the codebase. The refactoring is well-executed with clear documentation and appropriate semantic distinctions.

✅ Strengths

1. Excellent Resolution Strategy

  • Clear distinction between "true duplicates" (replaced) vs "semantically different" (renamed)
  • The resolution table in the PR description is extremely helpful
  • LogContextValue → EnvValue replacement is semantically correct
  • PayloadDataValue → CliValue | None is type-equivalent

2. Strong Type Safety

  • All replacements maintain type equivalence:
    • LogContextValue = str | int | float | bool | None matches EnvValue
    • PayloadDataValue = str | int | float | bool | list[str] | None matches CliValue | None
  • No unsafe type widening or narrowing

3. Semantic Clarity

  • QueryParameterValue correctly expresses URL query string semantics (allows None, excludes dict)
  • ScalarConfigValue appropriately narrows to scalar-only config values
  • Documentation comment in model_onex_common_types.py:45-47 clearly explains the narrower variants

4. Clean Refactoring

  • All import paths updated correctly
  • Test files updated to use new type names
  • Removed broken EnumValidationSeverity import (bonus cleanup)

5. Documentation Quality

  • Inline comments explain semantic differences
  • Type alias names are self-documenting (QueryParameterValue, ScalarConfigValue)

🔍 Observations

1. Type Hierarchy is Correct
The type relationships are sound:

  • CliValue = str | int | float | bool | list[str] (no None)
  • EnvValue = str | int | float | bool | None (no list)
  • QueryParameterValue = str | int | float | bool | list[str] | None (both)
  • ScalarConfigValue = int | float | bool | str (strict scalars, no collections)

2. Backward Compatibility

  • All changes are internal refactoring
  • No public API surface changes
  • Test updates confirm no behavioral changes

3. Validation Consistency
The validate_config_value_type function correctly works with ScalarConfigValue since it validates scalar types only (matches the narrower semantics).

📋 Minor Suggestions (Non-blocking)

1. Consider Adding Type Alias Documentation
The centralized type aliases in model_onex_common_types.py would benefit from a brief docstring or comment explaining when to use each type:

# Environment variable values (subprocess.Popen env dict, logging context)
EnvValue = str | int | float | bool | None

# CLI/argument values (argparse, click - no None since args have defaults)
CliValue = str | int | float | bool | list[str]

2. Test Coverage Validation
While the PR states "122 unit tests pass", consider confirming:

  • Tests for ModelEnvelopePayload with all CliValue | None variants
  • Tests for ModelQueryParameters with QueryParameterValue edge cases (None values)
  • Tests for ScalarConfigValue validation with all 4 scalar types

⚠️ Questions for Author

1. CliValue | None vs CliValue in ModelEnvelopePayload
The payload data field now uses dict[str, CliValue | None]. Is None semantically correct for payload data, or should it be strict CliValue (no None)?

From the code, it appears None is intentional (methods return CliValue | None with defaults), but worth confirming this matches the domain model.

2. Import Optimization
Some files now import from model_onex_common_types when they previously had local aliases. This is correct, but did you verify no circular import issues? (Likely fine since model_onex_common_types has no model imports, just type aliases.)

🎯 Alignment with CLAUDE.md Standards

✅ Type Annotation Style (PEP 604): All union syntax uses | operator (correct)
✅ Import Policy: Absolute imports used for cross-package boundaries
✅ File Naming: All files follow correct naming conventions
✅ Docstring Policy: Comments add value, not just restating names
✅ TODO Policy: PR references Linear ticket (OMN-1294)

🚀 Recommendation

APPROVE with minor documentation suggestions

This is a high-quality refactoring that:

  • Reduces duplication
  • Improves type consistency
  • Maintains type safety
  • Includes clear documentation
  • Passes all tests (mypy, pyright, pytest, pre-commit)

The semantic distinctions between QueryParameterValue and ScalarConfigValue are well-reasoned and appropriately named. The consolidation of true duplicates (LogContextValue, PayloadDataValue) is correct.

Code Review: Type Alias Consolidation (OMN-1294)

Summary

This PR successfully consolidates duplicate type aliases and removes a broken enum import. The changes are well-structured, properly documented, and follow ONEX conventions. Recommendation: APPROVE with minor observations noted below.

✅ Strengths

  1. Excellent Type Consolidation Strategy

    • Clear distinction between true duplicates (replaced) vs. semantically different types (renamed)
    • LogContextValue → EnvValue: Perfect match, true duplicate eliminated
    • PayloadDataValue → CliValue | None: Semantically equivalent consolidation
    • ParameterValue → QueryParameterValue: Smart rename preserving different semantics
    • ConfigValue → ScalarConfigValue: Appropriately renamed to reflect narrower scope
  2. Strong Documentation

    • Added helpful note in model_onex_common_types.py:45-47 documenting narrower variants
    • Comprehensive docstring in model_config_types.py explaining the distinction from centralized ConfigValue
    • Clear inline comments explaining semantic differences (e.g., "allows None, no dict")
  3. Proper Cleanup

    • Removed broken EnumValidationSeverity import that was blocking tests (verified file doesn't exist)
    • Updated all import statements and __all__ exports consistently
    • No orphaned references left behind (verified with grep)
  4. Type Safety Maintained

    • All replacements maintain type safety
    • mypy and pyright both pass (per PR description)
    • Test coverage validates the changes (122 unit tests pass)
  5. Follows ONEX Conventions

    • Uses PEP 604 union syntax (CliValue | None instead of Optional[CliValue])
    • Proper __all__ exports updated
    • Maintains consistent naming patterns

📋 Observations (Non-blocking)

  1. Type Alias Naming Consistency

    • QueryParameterValue and ScalarConfigValue use descriptive names (good!)
    • Consider documenting the naming pattern (adjective prefix for narrower variants) in architecture docs if this becomes a broader pattern
  2. Import Statements

    • model_envelope_payload.py:62 - Single-line import of CliValue is clean
    • mixin_debug_discovery_logging.py:15 - Good placement in type import section
  3. Documentation Comment Quality

    • The note at model_onex_common_types.py:45-47 is helpful
    • Consider adding a similar cross-reference comment in QueryParameterValue definition pointing to the centralized ParameterValue (like you did for ScalarConfigValue)

🔍 Technical Verification

Verified:

  • ✅ No remaining references to removed type aliases (PayloadDataValue, LogContextValue)
  • ✅ enum_validation_severity.py file doesn't exist (import removal justified)
  • ✅ All affected files updated consistently
  • ✅ Type annotations use centralized types correctly
  • ✅ __all__ exports updated properly

Type Semantics Validation:

Original Replacement Semantic Match?
LogContextValue = str | int | float | bool | None EnvValue = str | int | float | bool | None ✅ Identical
PayloadDataValue = str | int | float | bool | list[str] | None CliValue | None = (str | int | float | bool | list[str]) | None ✅ Equivalent
ParameterValue = ... (local) QueryParameterValue ✅ Renamed (different from centralized)
ConfigValue = int | float | bool | str (local) ScalarConfigValue ✅ Renamed (narrower than centralized)

🧪 Test Coverage

Per PR description:

  • ✅ 122 unit tests pass
  • ✅ mypy passes on all affected files
  • ✅ pyright passes on all affected files
  • ✅ All pre-commit hooks pass

The test file updates show proper usage:

  • test_model_envelope_payload.py correctly imports CliValue from centralized location
  • test_model_query_parameters.py uses renamed QueryParameterValue

🎯 Alignment with Project Standards

CLAUDE.md Compliance:

  • ✅ Uses PEP 604 union syntax (per ruff UP007)
  • ✅ Proper import organization (first-party imports)
  • ✅ Clear, non-tautological docstrings
  • ✅ Type annotations maintained throughout

Code Quality:

  • ✅ No type: ignore comments needed (proper type safety)
  • ✅ Consistent naming conventions
  • ✅ Proper __all__ exports

💡 Suggestions for Future Work (Optional)

  1. Architecture Documentation: Consider adding a brief section to docs/conventions/ about the type alias consolidation strategy (centralized vs. specialized variants)

  2. Cross-Reference Pattern: The pattern of documenting narrower variants in the centralized file (line 45-47) is excellent - consider applying this pattern elsewhere

  3. Migration Validation: For future type consolidations, the verification steps used here (grep for orphaned references, semantic comparison table) could be documented as a checklist

🏁 Conclusion

This is a high-quality refactoring that:

  • Reduces code duplication
  • Improves type system consistency
  • Maintains backward compatibility through semantic analysis
  • Follows all ONEX conventions
  • Includes comprehensive testing

No blocking issues identified. The changes are safe to merge.

Great work on the systematic approach and thorough documentation! 🎉
