Summary

  • Extend ModelExecutionProfile with nondeterministic_allowed_phases field and phase_order computed property
  • Extend ModelExecutionConflict with must_run_conflict type
  • Add comprehensive unit tests (44 tests)

Context

This PR implements OMN-1292, providing core models required by OMN-1227 (ProtocolConstraintValidator for SPI).

Decision: Extend Existing vs. Create New

Following ONEX principles, we extended existing models rather than creating new ones:

Model Approach Rationale
ModelExecutionProfile Extended in models/contracts/ Avoids naming collision, keeps phase semantics centralized
ModelExecutionConflict Extended with must_run_conflict Reuses existing conflict framework

Changes

ModelExecutionProfile (models/contracts/model_execution_profile.py):

  • Added nondeterministic_allowed_phases: list[str] - phases where nondeterministic effects are permitted
  • Added phase_order property - computed dict[str, int] mapping phases to indices (DRY, no redundant storage)
  • Added @model_validator ensuring:
    • phases are unique and non-empty strings
    • nondeterministic_allowed_phases is a subset of phases

ModelExecutionConflict (models/execution/model_execution_conflict.py):

  • Added "must_run_conflict" to conflict_type Literal union
  • Updated docstring with new conflict type

Test plan

  • 44 new unit tests pass
  • All existing tests pass
  • mypy strict mode passes (0 errors)
  • All pre-commit hooks pass

Blocks

  • OMN-1227: ProtocolConstraintValidator for SPI

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added configurable nondeterministic allowed phases and a cached phase-order mapping.
    • Introduced a "must run" conflict type.
  • Behavior Changes

    • Public collections (phases, conflict handler IDs, constraint refs, cycle paths) are now immutable tuples.
    • Profile creation now enforces uniqueness, non-empty phase names, and subset rules at instantiation.
    • Conflict and cycle reporting use immutable data shapes.
  • Tests

    • Added extensive tests for validation, immutability, phase ordering, and conflict scenarios.

✏️ Tip: You can customize this high-level summary in your review settings.

… for ProtocolConstraintValidator (OMN-1292)

Extend existing models to support OMN-1227 (ProtocolConstraintValidator for SPI):

ModelExecutionProfile (models/contracts/):
- Add nondeterministic_allowed_phases field for phases where nondeterminism is OK
- Add phase_order computed property (dict[str, int] mapping phases to indices)
- Add model_validator ensuring phases are unique and nondeterministic_allowed_phases is subset

ModelExecutionConflict (models/execution/):
- Add must_run_conflict to conflict_type Literal union

This follows ONEX principles by extending existing models rather than creating
duplicate models with naming conflicts.

Code Review: PR #361 - Extend ModelExecutionProfile and ModelExecutionConflict

✅ Overall Assessment: LGTM with Minor Suggestions

This PR implements clean, well-tested extensions to existing models following ONEX principles. The code quality is excellent with comprehensive test coverage and proper adherence to project conventions.

Strengths

🎯 Architecture & Design

  • Excellent decision to extend existing models rather than creating duplicates - follows DRY and avoids naming conflicts
  • Smart use of computed property (phase_order) instead of storing redundant data
  • Immutability preserved with frozen=True - maintains thread safety
  • Proper validation with @model_validator ensures data integrity

📝 Code Quality

  • Type safety: Proper use of PEP 604 union syntax (list[str], dict[str, int])
  • Pydantic best practices: from_attributes=True, extra="forbid", frozen=True
  • Clear documentation: Comprehensive docstrings with examples and version notes
  • Proper error messages: Clear, actionable error messages in validators

🧪 Testing Excellence

  • 44 comprehensive unit tests organized into logical test classes
  • Edge cases covered: Empty lists, whitespace, duplicates, subset validation
  • Immutability testing: Verifies frozen model behavior
  • Helper method coverage: All public methods tested (e.g., is_blocking(), involves_handler())

Code Analysis

ModelExecutionProfile Changes (✅ Excellent)

New Fields:

nondeterministic_allowed_phases: list[str] = Field(default_factory=list)
  • ✅ Safe default (empty list)
  • ✅ Validated as subset of phases
  • ✅ Clear semantic meaning

Computed Property:

@property
def phase_order(self) -> dict[str, int]:
    return {phase: idx for idx, phase in enumerate(self.phases)}
  • ✅ DRY: Derives from phases instead of storing redundantly
  • ✅ Thread-safe: Returns new dict each call (tested at line 84-91)
  • ✅ O(n) complexity: Acceptable for typical phase counts (3-10 phases)
  • ⚠️ Minor concern: Recomputes on every access - see suggestion below

Validation Logic:

# Validate phases are unique
if len(self.phases) \!= len(set(self.phases)):
    raise ValueError("phases must contain unique values")
  • ✅ Efficient uniqueness check
  • ✅ Proper whitespace handling (not phase.strip())
  • ✅ Clear, sorted error messages for invalid phases

ModelExecutionConflict Changes (✅ Perfect)

New Conflict Type:

conflict_type: Literal[..., "must_run_conflict"]
  • ✅ Extends existing Literal union cleanly
  • ✅ No breaking changes (additive only)
  • ✅ Properly documented in docstring
  • ✅ Works with all existing helper methods (is_blocking(), involves_handler())

Suggestions (Non-Blocking)

1. Performance: Consider Caching phase_order (Optional)

Current Implementation:

@property
def phase_order(self) -> dict[str, int]:
    return {phase: idx for idx, phase in enumerate(self.phases)}

Why it works now:

  • Model is frozen, so phases never changes
  • But dict is recomputed on every access

Optimization (if needed in future):

from functools import cached_property

@cached_property
def phase_order(self) -> dict[str, int]:
    return {phase: idx for idx, phase in enumerate(self.phases)}

Trade-off:

  • ✅ Pro: O(1) after first access
  • ❌ Con: Uses memory to cache result
  • 🤔 Decision: Current implementation is fine unless profiling shows it's a bottleneck

2. Test Enhancement: Add Multi-Error Test (Optional)

Current tests validate single errors well. Consider adding a test that would catch multiple validation errors simultaneously (though Pydantic stops at first error by default):

def test_multiple_validation_errors_possible(self) -> None:
    """Test behavior when multiple validations could fail."""
    with pytest.raises(ValidationError):
        ModelExecutionProfile(
            phases=["a", "a"],  # Duplicate
            nondeterministic_allowed_phases=["b"],  # Not in phases
        )

Security & Safety

✅ No security concerns identified:

  • Immutable models prevent tampering
  • No dynamic code execution
  • No external I/O or network calls
  • Proper input validation prevents injection

✅ Thread Safety:

  • frozen=True ensures immutability
  • from_attributes=True handles pytest-xdist correctly (per CLAUDE.md)
  • Computed property returns fresh dict (prevents shared state bugs)

Project Conventions Compliance

Checked against /CLAUDE.md:

Convention Status
✅ File naming Correct (model_*.py)
✅ PEP 604 unions Used (list[str], dict[str, int])
✅ Pydantic config frozen=True, extra="forbid", from_attributes=True
✅ Type annotations Self return type, proper Literal usage
✅ Docstrings Comprehensive with examples and version notes
✅ Exception handling ValueError with clear messages
✅ Test markers @pytest.mark.unit applied
✅ Test organization Logical test classes by feature

Final Recommendation

✅ APPROVE - Ready to Merge

Rationale:

  1. Code quality is excellent and follows all ONEX conventions
  2. Architecture decision (extend vs. create new) is sound
  3. Test coverage is comprehensive (44 tests covering all cases)
  4. No breaking changes - purely additive
  5. Blocks OMN-1227 as intended
  6. CI will validate mypy/pytest compliance

Suggested Actions Before Merge:

  • ✅ Ensure all CI checks pass (mypy, pytest, pre-commit)
  • 🤔 Consider cached_property optimization if OMN-1227 uses phase_order heavily
  • ✅ Verify OMN-1227 integration (out of scope for this PR)

🏆 Excellent Work!

This PR demonstrates:

  • Strong understanding of ONEX architecture
  • Attention to edge cases and validation
  • Comprehensive testing practices
  • Clear documentation

The extensions are minimal, focused, and well-integrated into existing patterns.

In @src/omnibase_core/models/contracts/model_execution_profile.py:
- Around line 70-75: The Pydantic model uses shallow immutability with list[str]
fields; change any list-typed fields (e.g., phases,
nondeterministic_allowed_phases, phase_order if present) to tuple[str, ...] in
the ModelExecutionProfile model and update their type annotations and validators
to accept/return tuples so instances are truly immutable under model_config
frozen=True; also update any code paths that consume these fields to handle
tuples instead of lists. In the existing string validators (the ones that
currently reject empty/whitespace-only values), normalize input by stripping
whitespace (or reject if stripped value is empty) so phase identifiers are
stored in canonical form (no leading/trailing spaces) and validation logic
(subset checks, ordering) remains reliable.
🧹 Nitpick comments (4)
src/omnibase_core/models/contracts/model_execution_profile.py (2)

77-91: phase_order looks good; relies on validation to prevent duplicate-key overwrites.
Given phase_order uses phase strings as dict keys, consider also rejecting phases with leading/trailing whitespace (e.g., require phase == phase.strip()), otherwise “visually identical” phases can diverge.

92-125: Tighten invariants: validate nondeterministic_allowed_phases entries (non-empty/normalized/unique).
Right now you validate subset membership, but duplicates and whitespace-only entries in nondeterministic_allowed_phases can slip through (and lead to confusing behavior).

Targeted validator tightening
         # Validate phases are non-empty strings
         for phase in self.phases:
             if not phase or not phase.strip():
                 raise ValueError("phases must be non-empty strings")
+            if phase != phase.strip():
+ raise ValueError("phases must not contain leading/trailing whitespace")

+        # Validate nondeterministic_allowed_phases entries
+        for phase in self.nondeterministic_allowed_phases:
+ if not phase or not phase.strip():
+                raise ValueError("nondeterministic_allowed_phases must be non-empty strings")
+            if phase != phase.strip():
+                raise ValueError(
+                    "nondeterministic_allowed_phases must not contain leading/trailing whitespace"
+                )
+        if len(self.nondeterministic_allowed_phases) != len(set(self.nondeterministic_allowed_phases)):
+ raise ValueError("nondeterministic_allowed_phases must contain unique values")
tests/unit/models/contracts/test_model_execution_profile.py (1)

155-194: Tests miss two important realities: (1) in-place list mutation, (2) actual from_attributes input.
If the model stays list[...], consider explicitly testing (and documenting) whether profile.phases.append(...) is allowed. Also, the “from_attributes” test currently validates dict parsing, not attribute parsing.

Example test additions (pick based on intended immutability contract)
class _Obj:
    def __init__(self) -> None:
        self.phases = ["init", "execute", "cleanup"]
        self.nondeterministic_allowed_phases = ["execute"]

def test_from_attributes_object(self) -> None:
    profile = ModelExecutionProfile.model_validate(_Obj())
    assert profile.phases == ["init", "execute", "cleanup"]

def test_in_place_mutation_behavior_is_defined(self) -> None:
    profile = ModelExecutionProfile()
    # Decide expected behavior; currently this likely succeeds with list-typed fields:
    profile.phases.append("mutated") # should this be allowed?
tests/unit/models/execution/test_model_execution_conflict.py (1)

228-280: Consider testing (or explicitly disclaiming) in-place mutation + real from_attributes inputs.
Right now these tests only verify assignment is blocked; they don’t guard against conflict.handler_ids.append(...) mutating a “frozen” instance, and they don’t exercise attribute-based validation inputs.

38-41: No downstream exhaustive matching exists for conflict_type. The codebase contains no match/case statements or exhaustive if/elif chains over this field. The only type-specific check is is_cycle() (line 192), which handles one case. Adding "must_run_conflict" poses no exhaustive matching risk.

Note: The thread-safety claim about immutability (line 40-41, 96-98) should be revisited—frozen=True prevents field reassignment but handler_ids, constraint_refs, and cycle_path are mutable list objects and can be modified in-place.

src/omnibase_core/models/contracts/model_execution_profile.py (2)

226-229: Redundant .strip() call—phases are already stripped.

The coerce_phases_to_tuple validator already strips whitespace from all phases (Line 138). The check if not phase or not phase.strip() is redundant since phase.strip() will always equal phase at this point.

♻️ Simplified validation
         # Validate phases are non-empty strings

231-236: Same redundant .strip() check for nondeterministic_allowed_phases.

The coerce_nondeterministic_phases_to_tuple validator already strips whitespace (Line 164).

♻️ Simplified validation

src/omnibase_core/models/contracts/model_execution_profile.py (3)

1-42: LGTM: Well-documented module with proper immutability setup.

The module docstring clearly documents the immutability rationale and version history. The DEFAULT_EXECUTION_PHASES constant is correctly defined as a tuple for immutability, and imports are properly organized.

174-198: LGTM: Well-implemented cached property.

The phase_order cached property correctly derives the phase-to-index mapping from the immutable phases tuple. Caching is safe since the model is frozen.

45-115: LGTM: Comprehensive class definition with proper immutability.

The class correctly implements:

  • frozen=True for attribute immutability
  • from_attributes=True for pytest-xdist compatibility (per coding guidelines)
  • Tuple fields for true content immutability
  • Clear docstrings with examples and version history
src/omnibase_core/models/execution/model_execution_conflict.py (3)

103-121: LGTM: Proper model configuration with new conflict type.

The model_config correctly includes from_attributes=True (per coding guidelines), frozen=True for immutability, and validate_assignment=True for extra safety. The must_run_conflict addition to the Literal union is well-documented.

134-161: LGTM: Tuple fields ensure true immutability.

The conversion from list[str] to tuple[str, ...] for handler_ids, constraint_refs, and cycle_path provides true immutability. The field descriptions clearly document the immutability semantics and usage for each conflict type.

173-188: LGTM: Appropriate constraint validation.

The model validator correctly enforces that cycle_path must be provided for cycle conflicts, with a clear error message.

tests/unit/factories/test_contract_profile_factory.py (1)

48-72: LGTM: Tests correctly updated for tuple-based phases.

The tests properly reflect the immutability changes:

  • expected_phases is now a tuple
  • test_custom_phases passes a tuple and verifies tuple output
  • Docstrings updated to document coercion behavior
tests/unit/models/contracts/test_model_execution_profile.py (4)

1-27: LGTM: Well-structured test module.

Proper SPDX headers, comprehensive docstring with references to related tickets, and correct imports including the @pytest.mark.unit marker as per coding guidelines.

92-113: LGTM: Caching behavior tests are thorough.

Tests correctly verify that phase_order is cached (same object returned) and that each instance maintains its own independent cache. The comment on Lines 111-112 appropriately notes the dict mutability caveat while acknowledging the model's immutability makes this acceptable.

297-335: LGTM: Multi-error aggregation tests.

Good coverage of Pydantic's error aggregation behavior. The tests verify that multiple validation failures are reported together, which is important for user experience.

338-401: LGTM: Comprehensive tuple immutability tests.

Excellent coverage verifying:

  • Field reassignment is blocked by frozen=True
  • Tuples lack mutation methods (append, etc.)
  • Type assertions confirm tuple semantics
  • Cache consistency for phase_order
tests/unit/infrastructure/execution/test_phase_sequencer.py (3)

26-26: LGTM: Appropriate adaptations for tuple-based phases.

The import of ValidationError and the use of list(DEFAULT_EXECUTION_PHASES) correctly adapts to the API where:

  • DEFAULT_EXECUTION_PHASES is now a tuple
  • validate_phase_list expects a list input

Also applies to: 108-108, 157-157

715-726: LGTM: Correctly tests validation at model creation time.

The test properly verifies that duplicate phases now raise ValidationError during ModelExecutionProfile instantiation (via Pydantic's model validator), rather than at runtime. The docstring clearly explains this behavioral change.

438-446: LGTM: Tests use tuple syntax for phases.

Profile creation correctly uses tuple syntax ("execute", "before") and ("preflight", "execute", "finalize"), aligning with the new API.

Also applies to: 453-468

tests/unit/models/execution/test_model_execution_conflict.py (5)

1-24: LGTM: Well-organized test module with comprehensive scope.

Proper SPDX headers, clear docstring outlining test coverage areas, and correct references to related tickets (OMN-1106, OMN-1227, OMN-1292).

58-109: LGTM: Thorough must_run_conflict type coverage.

Tests comprehensively cover the new must_run_conflict type:

  • Valid creation
  • Blocking vs warning severity
  • Not a cycle type
  • Handler involvement checks

111-152: LGTM: Parametrized test covers all conflict types.

The parametrized test elegantly handles all seven conflict types, with special handling for the cycle type that requires cycle_path. This ensures the new must_run_conflict is validated alongside existing types.

254-348: LGTM: Comprehensive from_attributes testing.

Excellent coverage of Pydantic's from_attributes functionality:

  • Dict input with list-to-tuple coercion
  • Extra fields rejection
  • Object with attributes
  • Partial attributes with defaults
  • Verifies tuple types after coercion

390-469: LGTM: Complete tuple immutability verification.

Tests thoroughly verify immutability for all tuple fields:

  • handler_ids reassignment blocked
  • Tuple lacks mutation methods
  • cycle_path immutability
  • constraint_refs immutability
src/omnibase_core/resolution/resolver_execution.py (3)

436-471: LGTM: Conflict construction uses tuples consistently.

All ModelExecutionConflict creations for missing dependencies (handler, capability, tag) now correctly use tuple literals for handler_ids and constraint_refs, aligning with the immutable model definition.

548-559: LGTM: Cycle conflict uses tuples correctly.

The cycle conflict construction now uses tuple(cycle[:-1]) for handler_ids and tuple(cycle) for cycle_path, ensuring immutability consistent with ModelExecutionConflict's updated field types.

692-696: LGTM: Type annotation updated for tuple-based phases.

The profile_phases parameter correctly uses tuple[str, ...] to match ModelExecutionProfile.phases field type.

PR Review: OMN-1292 - Core Models for ProtocolConstraintValidator

Summary

This PR extends ModelExecutionProfile and ModelExecutionConflict with new fields and validations to support the upcoming ProtocolConstraintValidator (OMN-1227). The implementation is solid and production-ready with excellent test coverage and attention to immutability.

✅ Strengths

1. Excellent Test Coverage (44 comprehensive tests)

  • 402-line test suite for ModelExecutionProfile covering all edge cases
  • 470-line test suite for ModelExecutionConflict with thorough validation testing
  • Well-organized test classes with clear intent
  • Proper use of @pytest.mark.unit markers
  • Tests verify both happy paths and error conditions

2. True Immutability via Tuples

The migration from list[str] → tuple[str, ...] is a significant improvement providing:

  • Protection against accidental mutation
  • Thread-safety guarantees
  • Better alignment with Pydantic frozen model intent

3. Smart Field Validators

  • coerce_phases_to_tuple: Normalizes whitespace
  • coerce_nondeterministic_phases_to_tuple: Normalizes + deduplicates while preserving order
  • validate_profile: Comprehensive post-validation for invariants

4. Performance Optimization

Using @cached_property for phase_order is smart - avoids recomputing the dictionary on every access while maintaining consistency (safe because model is frozen).

5. Backward Compatibility

All existing tests pass with updates to accommodate tuple types. The coercion validators ensure existing code passing lists will continue to work.

6. Comprehensive Documentation

  • Clear docstrings with version annotations
  • Proper cross-references to related tickets (OMN-1227, OMN-1292)
  • Examples in docstrings
  • Detailed field descriptions

🎯 Architecture & Design

1. Subset Validation Pattern

The validation ensuring nondeterministic_allowed_phases ⊆ phases is well-implemented. Providing sorted invalid phases in error messages is excellent UX.

2. Conflict Type Extension

Adding must_run_conflict to the Literal union is clean and follows the existing pattern. The existing helper methods (is_blocking, is_cycle, involves_handler) work correctly with the new type.

3. Consistency with ONEX Patterns

  • Uses frozen=True ✅
  • Uses extra=forbid ✅
  • Uses from_attributes=True ✅ (Important for pytest-xdist)
  • Comprehensive validation with clear error messages ✅

🔒 Security & Safety

No Security Concerns

  • No external inputs or dangerous operations
  • Validation prevents malformed data
  • Immutability prevents state corruption
  • Thread-safe due to frozen model + tuple fields

PR Review: ModelExecutionProfile and ModelExecutionConflict Extensions (OMN-1292)

Overall Assessment

Strong Approval ✅ - This PR demonstrates excellent engineering practices and aligns perfectly with ONEX principles. The implementation is well-designed, comprehensively tested, and properly documented.

Strengths

1. Architectural Decisions 🎯

  • Excellent choice to extend existing models rather than create new ones - follows DRY and avoids naming collisions
  • Clear decision-making documented in PR description (extend vs. create new)
  • Properly scoped to OMN-1292, with clear blocking relationship to OMN-1227

2. True Immutability Implementation 🔒

  • Outstanding work converting list[str] to tuple[str, ...] for true immutability
  • Goes beyond Pydantic's frozen=True (which only prevents reassignment) to prevent content mutation
  • This is a critical pattern for thread-safe value objects in pytest-xdist environments
  • Well-documented in docstrings and comprehensive test coverage

3. Performance Optimization ⚡

  • Smart use of @cached_property for phase_order - computes once, reuses thereafter
  • Safe because underlying phases tuple is immutable
  • Avoids redundant storage while providing O(1) phase lookups

4. Validation Excellence ✅

  • Comprehensive validation in validate_profile model validator:
    • Phases uniqueness check
    • Non-empty string validation
    • Subset validation (nondeterministic_allowed_phases ⊆ phases)
  • Smart field validators with coercion (list → tuple) and normalization (strip, dedupe)
  • Proper error messages that guide users to fix issues

5. Test Coverage 🧪

  • 574 lines of tests for ModelExecutionProfile
  • 469 lines of tests for ModelExecutionConflict
  • 44 new tests total covering:
    • Creation patterns (default, custom, from_attributes)
    • Validation (uniqueness, subset, non-empty)
    • Immutability (field reassignment, tuple mutation, index mutation)
    • Coercion (list → tuple)
    • Caching behavior
    • Multi-error aggregation
    • All conflict types including must_run_conflict

6. Documentation Quality 📚

  • Excellent docstrings with:
    • Clear descriptions of purpose and behavior
    • Examples with >>> doctests
    • Version change tracking
    • Cross-references to tickets (OMN-1227, OMN-1292)
  • Field descriptions are detailed and helpful
  • Module-level documentation explains design decisions

7. Backward Compatibility 🔄

  • Seamless migration path - field validators coerce list inputs to tuple
  • Existing code using lists continues to work (with automatic conversion)
  • Updated existing usage in resolver_execution.py and phase_sequencer.py

Code Quality Observations

Validation Logic (model_execution_profile.py:195-241)

The validate_profile method is well-structured with clear error messages. Consider minor optimization:

# Current: Validates empty strings AFTER subset check
# Suggestion: Early exit for empty strings before subset validation
# (Minor - current code is correct and clear)

Verdict: Current implementation is fine - clear and correct is better than micro-optimized.

Whitespace Stripping (model_execution_profile.py:135, 158)

Both field validators strip whitespace, which is excellent for robustness. The deduplication in coerce_nondeterministic_phases_to_tuple is smart.

Question for consideration: Should whitespace-only phases be caught in field validator vs model validator? Current approach (strip then validate non-empty in model validator) is clean.

Verdict: Current approach is good - normalization in field validator, validation in model validator is the right separation.

Test Naming and Organization

Test classes are excellently organized:

  • TestModelExecutionProfileCreation - basic creation
  • TestPhaseOrderProperty - cached property behavior
  • TestNondeterministicPhasesValidation - subset validation
  • TestTupleImmutabilityBehavior - immutability guarantees
  • TestListToTupleCoercion - backward compat

Excellent separation of concerns.

Security & Thread Safety

✅ Thread-safe - All fields are immutable tuples, model is frozen
✅ No injection risks - Pure data models with validation
✅ Safe for concurrent access - Documented in docstrings

Performance Considerations

Cached Property Performance

@cached_property on phase_order is optimal:

  • First access: O(n) to build dict
  • Subsequent accesses: O(1) cached lookup
  • Memory: One dict per profile instance (acceptable)

Validation Performance

  • Field validators run once at model creation
  • Model validator runs once after field validation
  • No performance concerns - validation cost is acceptable for model creation

Alignment with ONEX Standards

✅ File Naming: model_*.py convention followed
✅ Type Annotations: PEP 604 union syntax (tuple[str, ...] | None)
✅ Error Handling: Uses Pydantic ValidationError appropriately
✅ Documentation: Comprehensive docstrings with examples
✅ Testing: @pytest.mark.unit markers used correctly
✅ Immutability: Aligns with THREADING.md guidance on immutable value objects

Suggested Improvements (Optional)

1. Type Hint for phase_order Return

Consider adding Mapping[str, int] import and using it for read-only semantics:

from collections.abc import Mapping

@cached_property
def phase_order(self) -> Mapping[str, int]:
    # Signals to users this shouldn't be mutated
    return {phase: idx for idx, phase in enumerate(self.phases)}

Impact: Low priority - current dict[str, int] is clear enough.

2. Explicit Export in __all__

ModelExecutionProfile doesn't have __all__ (ModelExecutionConflict does). Consider adding for consistency:

__all__ = [
    "ModelExecutionProfile",
    "DEFAULT_EXECUTION_PHASES",
]

Impact: Low priority - not blocking.

3. Performance Test for Large Phase Lists

While current usage likely has 6-12 phases, consider adding a performance test for pathological cases (100+ phases):

def test_phase_order_performance_large_list(self) -> None:
    """Test phase_order performance with large phase list."""
    large_phases = tuple(f"phase_{i}" for i in range(1000))
    profile = ModelExecutionProfile(phases=large_phases)
    # First access - O(n)
    order1 = profile.phase_order
    assert len(order1) == 1000
    # Second access - O(1) cached
    order2 = profile.phase_order
    assert order1 is order2

Impact: Very low priority - mostly academic.

Questions for Author

  1. Must-run conflict semantics: Is must_run_conflict for handlers that both declare must_run=True but have ordering conflicts? Would be helpful to add an example to ModelExecutionConflict docstring.

  2. Validation order: Any reason nondeterministic_allowed_phases is deduplicated in field validator but phases uniqueness is checked in model validator? (Current approach works, just curious about the design choice.)

  3. Future extensibility: Are there plans for additional constraint validation types that would use phase_order property? (Would help understand the full scope of OMN-1227.)

Blocking Issues

None - This PR is ready to merge pending CI passes.

Final Recommendation

✅ APPROVE - Merge after CI passes

Rationale:

  • Excellent code quality and engineering practices
  • Comprehensive test coverage (44 tests, 1000+ lines)
  • True immutability implementation (tuple fields)
  • Clear documentation and examples
  • Backward compatible with existing code
  • Aligns perfectly with ONEX architecture principles
  • No security, performance, or thread safety concerns

Suggested merge message:

🧹 Nitpick comments (1)
src/omnibase_core/models/contracts/model_execution_profile.py (1)

117-166: Verify intentional deduplication inconsistency between validators.

The coerce_phases_to_tuple validator normalizes but does not deduplicate, while coerce_nondeterministic_phases_to_tuple explicitly deduplicates (lines 160-166). Combined with the validate_profile check that rejects duplicate phases (line 217-218), this creates asymmetric behavior:

  • Duplicate phases → ValidationError
  • Duplicate nondeterministic_allowed_phases → silently deduplicated

This may be intentional (nondeterministic_allowed_phases is semantically a set, phases is an ordered sequence), but confirm this design choice is deliberate and consider adding a clarifying note in the docstring.

Optional: Extract shared normalization logic

Both validators strip whitespace. If you expect to add more validators with similar normalization, consider extracting:

@staticmethod
def _normalize_phase_names(phases: tuple[str, ...]) -> tuple[str, ...]:
    """Strip whitespace from phase names."""
    return tuple(phase.strip() for phase in phases)

However, with only two validators, the current inline approach is acceptable.

src/omnibase_core/models/contracts/model_execution_profile.py (3)

168-192: Excellent caching strategy for phase lookups.

The cached_property implementation is optimal for this use case:

  • Computed once per instance, avoiding repeated enumeration
  • Thread-safe in Python 3.12+ (meets the project's target)
  • Guaranteed consistency due to immutable phases tuple and frozen=True

194-241: Robust validation with clear error messages.

The model-level validation correctly enforces all invariants:

  • Phase uniqueness detection (line 217-218)
  • Non-empty string checks prevent whitespace-only phases
  • Subset validation ensures referential integrity
  • Error messages include context (e.g., sorted(invalid_phases) at line 238)

The validation ordering (field validators → model validator) ensures normalization happens before invariant checks.

24-27: LGTM: Immutability implementation is correct.

The refactor successfully achieves true immutability:

  • Tuple types (tuple[str, ...]) prevent mutation beyond frozen=True
  • DEFAULT_EXECUTION_PHASES as tuple prevents accidental modification of the default
  • New nondeterministic_allowed_phases field aligns with OMN-1292 requirements
  • from_attributes=True in ConfigDict follows project learnings for pytest-xdist compatibility

Based on learnings: from_attributes=True is correctly included for immutable value objects used with pytest-xdist.

Also applies to: 35-42, 95-108, 110-115

src/omnibase_core/infrastructure/execution/phase_sequencer.py (1)

80-80: LGTM: Clean adaptation to tuple-based phases.

The signature updates correctly support the tuple-based refactor:

  • Lines 80, 127-129: list[str] | tuple[str, ...] provides flexibility while maintaining backward compatibility
  • Line 476: Passing DEFAULT_EXECUTION_PHASES directly (without list() wrapper) correctly leverages the tuple default
  • All functions remain pure and thread-safe since tuples are immutable

The changes maintain consistent behavior while supporting the immutability improvements in ModelExecutionProfile.

Also applies to: 127-129, 476-476

Code Review - PR #361

Overall Assessment: ✅ EXCELLENT

This PR demonstrates exceptional code quality with comprehensive testing, excellent documentation, and careful attention to immutability guarantees. The changes are well-architected and follow ONEX best practices.

Strengths 🌟

1. Immutability Design

  • ✅ True immutability via tuple fields (not just frozen=True)
  • ✅ Properly prevents both field reassignment AND content mutation
  • ✅ Extensive tests verify immutability guarantees (lines 200-437 in test file)

2. Validation Architecture

  • ✅ Clear separation: field validators (normalization) → model validator (invariants)
  • ✅ Excellent error messages with specific context (e.g., "phases must contain unique values")
  • ✅ Comprehensive edge case coverage: duplicates, empty strings, whitespace-only, subset validation
  • ✅ Intentional fail-fast on duplicates (doesn't silently deduplicate) - good UX decision

3. Performance Optimization

  • ✅ @cached_property for phase_order - computed once, reused efficiently
  • ✅ Safe caching due to immutability guarantees
  • ✅ Tests verify cache behavior (lines 92-113)

4. Test Coverage (44 new tests!)

  • ✅ 814 lines of tests for ModelExecutionProfile
  • ✅ 667 lines of tests for ModelExecutionConflict
  • ✅ Comprehensive coverage: creation, validation, immutability, coercion, edge cases
  • ✅ Tests verify tuple immutability prevents index mutation (lines 412-436)
  • ✅ Excellent use of pytest markers and parametrization

5. Documentation Quality

  • ✅ Comprehensive docstrings with examples
  • ✅ Version history annotations (versionchanged, versionadded)
  • ✅ Cross-references to OMN tickets (OMN-1227, OMN-1292)
  • ✅ Clear explanations of design decisions (e.g., why duplicates raise errors)

6. Backward Compatibility

  • ✅ List-to-tuple coercion preserves existing API (lines 117-136, 138-166)
  • ✅ from_attributes=True supports multiple input patterns
  • ✅ Tests verify mixed list/tuple inputs work correctly

7. Type Safety

  • ✅ Proper type annotations: tuple[str, ...] vs list[str]
  • ✅ Uses Self return type for validator (Pydantic 2.x best practice)
  • ✅ Updated function signatures in phase_sequencer.py to accept tuples

Code Quality Observations 🔍

ModelExecutionProfile (model_execution_profile.py:194-268)

Excellent validation chain:

# Lines 232-266: Clear, readable, well-documented invariant checks
if len(self.phases) \!= len(set(self.phases)):
    raise ValueError("phases must contain unique values")

Strengths:

  • Each validation has a dedicated error message
  • Comments explain whitespace handling after field validators
  • Sorted output for invalid phases (sorted(invalid_phases)) aids debugging

ModelExecutionConflict (model_execution_conflict.py:134-161)

Excellent field documentation:

handler_ids: tuple[str, ...] = Field(
    default=(),
    description=(
        "Immutable tuple of handler IDs involved in the conflict. "
        "Empty tuple if no specific handlers are involved. "
        "For CYCLE conflicts, these are the handlers forming the cycle. "
        "For MUST_RUN_CONFLICT, these are the handlers with conflicting declarations."
    ),
)

Strengths:

  • Multi-line descriptions explain context-specific usage
  • Empty tuple as default (not None) - safer API
  • Clear semantic meaning for each conflict type

Integration Changes (resolver_execution.py)

Clean tuple conversion:

# Lines 440-471: Consistent tuple usage in conflict creation
handler_ids=(source_handler,),  # Single-element tuple
constraint_refs=(ref,),

Strengths:

  • Minimal changes to existing code
  • Consistent with new immutability contract
  • Maintains backward compatibility

Potential Improvements 💡

1. Cached Property Mutability (Minor)

Location: model_execution_profile.py:168-192

Current behavior:

@cached_property
def phase_order(self) -> dict[str, int]:
    return {phase: idx for idx, phase in enumerate(self.phases)}

Observation:
The returned dictionary is mutable, which could allow callers to modify cached values:

profile.phase_order["new_phase"] = 99  # Mutates cached dict\!

Suggested enhancement (optional):

from types import MappingProxyType

@cached_property
def phase_order(self) -> MappingProxyType[str, int]:
    return MappingProxyType({phase: idx for idx, phase in enumerate(self.phases)})

Impact: Low priority - callers shouldn't mutate this, but MappingProxyType would prevent accidental modification.

2. Test Docstring Consistency

Location: test_model_execution_profile.py:154-160

Observation:
Most test docstrings use imperative mood ("Test that..."), which is great. A few use different styles.

Suggestion: Consider standardizing to imperative mood throughout (already mostly done).

3. Type Ignore Comments

Location: test_enum_handler_execution_phase.py:258-265

Current:

assert EnumHandlerExecutionPhase.PREFLIGHT == "preflight"  # type: ignore[comparison-overlap]

Observation:
The type ignores are well-justified in comments. This is correct for StrEnum runtime behavior vs static analysis.

Suggestion: None - this is the right approach. The comments explain why type ignores are needed.

Security & Best Practices ✅

  • ✅ No security concerns
  • ✅ No SQL injection / XSS vectors (pure data models)
  • ✅ Thread-safe (fully immutable)
  • ✅ No resource leaks
  • ✅ Follows ONEX error handling patterns (ModelOnexError)
  • ✅ Proper use of Pydantic validation
  • ✅ No over-engineering - minimal changes to achieve goals

Performance Considerations ⚡

  • ✅ @cached_property prevents redundant dictionary construction
  • ✅ Tuple fields are more memory-efficient than lists
  • ✅ Validation happens once at model creation (not on every access)
  • ✅ No performance regressions expected in existing code

Benchmark suggestion (optional):
Consider adding performance tests for phase_order caching if this becomes a hot path.

Test Coverage Analysis 📊

New test files:

  • test_model_execution_profile.py: 814 lines (44+ test methods)
  • test_model_execution_conflict.py: 667 lines (comprehensive coverage)

Coverage areas:

  • ✅ Creation & defaults
  • ✅ Validation (positive & negative cases)
  • ✅ Immutability guarantees
  • ✅ List-to-tuple coercion
  • ✅ from_attributes compatibility
  • ✅ Edge cases (empty strings, whitespace, duplicates)
  • ✅ Multi-error aggregation
  • ✅ Cached property behavior
  • ✅ Must-run conflict type integration

Test quality: Excellent use of:

  • Parametrization for conflict types
  • Explicit edge case tests
  • Clear test naming (follows test_<what>_<scenario> pattern)
  • Proper use of pytest.raises with match patterns

Alignment with ONEX Standards 📘

Per CLAUDE.md:

  • ✅ Pydantic Models: Uses from_attributes=True (CLAUDE.md:540-550)
  • ✅ Error Handling: Uses structured ValidationError with clear messages
  • ✅ Type Annotations: Full PEP 604 union syntax (tuple[str, ...] | None)
  • ✅ Documentation: Comprehensive docstrings with examples
  • ✅ Testing: Exceeds 60% coverage requirement
  • ✅ Immutability: frozen=True + tuple fields (CLAUDE.md:540)
  • ✅ No Breaking Changes: List inputs still work via coercion

Recommended Actions ✅

Before Merge:

  1. ✅ Verify all CI checks pass (currently in progress)
  2. ✅ Confirm mypy strict mode passes (0 errors)
  3. ✅ Verify test coverage exceeds 60% threshold

Optional Enhancements (Future PRs):

  1. Consider MappingProxyType for phase_order immutability
  2. Add performance benchmarks if phase_order becomes a hot path

Final Verdict 🎯

APPROVE - Ship It! 🚀

This PR is production-ready and demonstrates:

  • Exceptional code quality
  • Comprehensive testing (1481 lines of test code!)
  • Excellent documentation
  • Careful architectural design
  • Strong backward compatibility

The changes properly extend existing models without breaking changes, provide true immutability guarantees, and include exhaustive test coverage. The cached phase_order property is a smart optimization, and the validation architecture is clean and maintainable.

Great work on OMN-1292! This provides a solid foundation for OMN-1227 (ProtocolConstraintValidator).

Nitpicks (Non-blocking)

  • Consider MappingProxyType for cached dict immutability (very minor)
  • All test docstrings could use imperative mood (already mostly consistent)

7-10: phase_order breaks the “fully immutable” contract (mutable dict + cached instance state).
cached_property caches into __dict__, and the returned dict can be mutated by consumers—silently corrupting subsequent lookups on the same instance. Consider returning a read-only mapping (or at least a defensive copy) to match the docstring and immutability intent.

Proposed fix (return a read-only mapping)
-from functools import cached_property
+from functools import cached_property
+from types import MappingProxyType
@@
     @cached_property
     def phase_order(self) -> dict[str, int]:

Also applies to: 53-57, 168-193

194-268: Consider explicitly rejecting phases=() if downstream assumes at least one phase.
As written, an empty phases tuple passes (no empties, no duplicates). If any execution planning assumes ≥1 phase, fail fast here with a targeted error.

Possible adjustment
         # Validate phases are unique
         if len(self.phases) != len(set(self.phases)):
             raise ValueError("phases must contain unique values")
+
+        if not self.phases:
+ raise ValueError("phases must not be empty")
tests/unit/enums/test_enum_handler_execution_phase.py (1)

253-266: Test comments say “StrEnum” but the enum is str, Enum; consider rewording (and possibly reducing ignores).
The runtime equality-to-string behavior comes from the str mixin here, not necessarily enum.StrEnum. If you want to avoid type: ignore[comparison-overlap] noise, prefer .value comparisons for most assertions and reserve direct == "..." checks for a single dedicated runtime-behavior test.

1-24: LGTM! Clean imports and documentation.

The module header, imports, and docstring are well-structured. The references to OMN tickets provide good traceability for the new must_run_conflict functionality.

26-667: Excellent test coverage and organization!

This test suite provides comprehensive coverage of ModelExecutionConflict including the new must_run_conflict type (OMN-1292). Highlights:

  • Thorough validation testing: All conflict types, error conditions, and edge cases
  • Extensive immutability verification: Tests frozen model, tuple fields, and prevention of index mutation
  • from_attributes compatibility: Multiple source types (dict, object, namedtuple, dataclass) with proper list-to-tuple coercion
  • Multi-error aggregation: Validates that Pydantic reports multiple validation errors together
  • Clear organization: 11 test classes logically grouped by feature area
  • Proper pytest usage: Unit markers, parametrize, clear docstrings

The test logic is correct throughout, including cycle length calculation (line 179), tuple coercion verification (lines 275-276), and TypeError expectations for index mutation (lines 488-515).

tests/unit/enums/test_enum_handler_execution_phase.py (2)

91-98: Tuple alignment with DEFAULT_EXECUTION_PHASES is correct.
This matches the new immutability contract and avoids list/tuple assertion mismatches.

Also applies to: 113-119

289-291: Pydantic coercion test is fine; keep the ignore narrowly scoped.
The # type: ignore[arg-type] is appropriately localized to the runtime-coercion case.

Overall Assessment: ✅ Excellent

This PR demonstrates exceptional code quality and adherence to ONEX best practices. The implementation is well-thought-out, thoroughly tested, and properly documented.

Strengths

1. Architecture & Design ✅

  • Proper Model Extension: Following ONEX principles by extending existing models rather than creating duplicates
  • True Immutability: Excellent use of tuple[str, ...] instead of list[str] for collections, ensuring deep immutability beyond Pydantic's frozen=True
  • MappingProxyType Usage: Smart choice for phase_order property to ensure the returned mapping is truly immutable
  • Cached Property: Using @functools.cached_property for phase_order is a performance-conscious decision

2. Code Quality ✅

  • Type Safety: All type annotations are correct and mypy-compliant
  • Validation: Comprehensive field and model validators with excellent error messages
  • Error Handling: Proper use of descriptive ValueError messages
  • Documentation: Outstanding docstrings with examples, version changes, and cross-references

3. Testing ✅ (44 new tests!)

The change from list to tuple for DEFAULT_EXECUTION_PHASES is backward-compatible for reads but could break code that mutates it. This is actually a good thing - it prevents accidental mutation of the default phases.

Impact: Low - Any code trying to mutate this will fail fast with a clear error.

2. Type Ignores in Tests ℹ️

The test file test_enum_handler_execution_phase.py has several # type: ignore[comparison-overlap] comments. These are appropriate given the str, Enum pattern used, and the comments explain why they're needed.

Quality: The comments are well-justified and include explanations.

3. Validation Order ✅

The validation chain is well-documented:

  1. Field validators normalize and type-check
  2. Model validator enforces invariants

This separation of concerns is excellent design.

Performance Considerations

✅ Positive

  • Cached Property: phase_order is computed once and cached
  • MappingProxyType: Read-only wrapper has minimal overhead
  • Tuple Storage: Tuples are more memory-efficient than lists

No Concerns

  • All validation happens at creation time (not on every access)
  • No performance regressions expected

Security Considerations

✅ No Issues Detected

  • Immutability: Prevents accidental state mutation
  • Validation: Comprehensive input validation prevents malformed data
  • No User Input: These are internal models, not exposed to external input
  • Type Safety: Strong typing prevents type confusion

🧹 Nitpick comments (2)
tests/unit/models/contracts/test_model_execution_profile.py (2)

39-47: Consider removing duplicate test.

test_custom_phases and test_custom_phases_from_tuple are identical—both pass a tuple and verify the same result. Since the model now internally coerces lists to tuples, consider keeping only one test (perhaps the one that tests list coercion) or renaming to differentiate their purpose.

100-113: Outdated comment: phase_order is now immutable.

The comment on lines 111-112 states "modification of the returned dict could affect cached value" but this is no longer accurate. Per the model implementation, phase_order returns a MappingProxyType, which is immutable. Consider updating or removing this comment to avoid confusion.

🔧 Suggested fix
         # Different profiles have different phase orders
         assert order1 == {"init": 0, "execute": 1}
         assert order2 == {"alpha": 0, "beta": 1, "gamma": 2}
- # But modification of the returned dict could affect cached value
- # This is acceptable since the model is immutable

tests/unit/models/contracts/test_model_execution_profile.py (4)

1-27: LGTM! Well-structured test module setup.

The imports, docstring, and module-level configuration are correct. The test file follows project conventions with proper SPDX headers, comprehensive docstrings, and appropriate imports for the features being tested.

115-478: LGTM! Comprehensive validation and immutability tests.

The test classes for validation (TestNondeterministicPhasesValidation, TestPhasesValidation), immutability (TestImmutability, TestTupleImmutabilityBehavior), coercion (TestListToTupleCoercion), and from_attributes compatibility are well-structured and thoroughly cover edge cases. The tests correctly verify the model's behavior as per the implementation.

817-853: LGTM! Type validation and immutability tests.

The TestTypeValidation class properly tests type validation for non-string elements, empty phases rejection, and verifies that phase_order returns an immutable MappingProxyType. These tests align with the model's validation and immutability guarantees.

692-704: No changes needed—test expectation is correct.

The test correctly expects TypeError when passing a non-iterable value to the phases field. The field validator directly iterates over the input without exception handling (for i, phase in enumerate(v):), which raises TypeError: 'int' object is not iterable for int inputs. In Pydantic v2, such exceptions from field_validators propagate as-is rather than being wrapped in ValidationError.

tests/unit/enums/test_enum_handler_execution_phase.py (6)

93-98: LGTM! Tuple conversion for DEFAULT_EXECUTION_PHASES alignment.

The change from list comprehension to tuple correctly aligns the test assertion with the updated DEFAULT_EXECUTION_PHASES type (now a tuple for immutability).

116-118: LGTM! Consistent tuple usage for phase comparison.

Same pattern as above—correctly using tuple to match DEFAULT_EXECUTION_PHASES type.

253-266: LGTM! Well-documented runtime behavior for str/Enum comparisons.

The updated docstring clearly explains why type: ignore[comparison-overlap] is needed—mypy can't statically verify that str, Enum members are equal to their string values at runtime. This is appropriate documentation for the pattern used.

382-401: LGTM! Proper type ignore annotations with context.

The updated docstring and comments explain the runtime vs. compile-time behavior difference for enum identity and equality comparisons. The type: ignore annotations are correctly placed and documented.

290-291: LGTM! Type annotation for Pydantic string coercion.

The type: ignore[arg-type] is appropriate here since Pydantic coerces strings to enums at runtime, but the static type signature expects EnumHandlerExecutionPhase.

411-417: LGTM! Improved docstring assertion handling.

The assertions now properly handle the None case for the docstring with explicit error messaging, and verify expected content.

src/omnibase_core/models/contracts/model_execution_profile.py (8)

24-28: LGTM! Appropriate imports for immutability features.

The imports of cached_property, MappingProxyType, Self, and Pydantic validators are correct for implementing the immutability and validation features.

34-43: LGTM! Immutable default phases constant.

Converting DEFAULT_EXECUTION_PHASES from a list to a tuple ensures immutability at the module level, preventing accidental modification.

46-94: LGTM! Comprehensive class documentation.

The docstring thoroughly explains the immutability guarantees, attributes, properties, and provides a clear example. The version change notes help track evolution.

96-116: LGTM! Correct field definitions with immutability.

The fields use tuples for immutability, and model_config includes frozen=True and from_attributes=True as required by coding guidelines for immutable value objects in Pydantic models.

118-146: LGTM! Robust coercion with type checking.

The validator properly handles list-to-tuple coercion, validates each element is a string before calling .strip(), and provides clear error messages with the index of the failing element. This prevents AttributeError if non-strings are passed.

148-187: LGTM! Consistent validation with intentional design choice.

The validator follows the same pattern as coerce_phases_to_tuple and clearly documents that deduplication is intentionally deferred to the model_validator to raise errors for duplicate entries rather than silently correcting them.

216-298: LGTM! Comprehensive model validation.

The model_validator thoroughly validates all invariants with clear, specific error messages. The validation order (empty check → uniqueness → content validation → subset check) is logical, and the use of sorted() for error messages ensures consistent output. The docstring clearly documents all validation rules and error cases.

189-214: Verify cached_property compatibility with frozen Pydantic models.

cached_property typically stores its computed value in the instance's __dict__. However, Pydantic's frozen=True may restrict __dict__ modifications after initialization. This could cause AttributeError on first access. Pydantic 2.x models with frozen=True generally allow cached_property to work because the property access happens after model construction, but this should be verified.

Does Pydantic 2.x frozen model support cached_property?
