…ccess_token resolve_nous_access_token() and resolve_nous_runtime_credentials() are twin allowlist checks on the same stored/network-sourced portal_base_url field — both POST the user's refresh_token bearer to this URL on refresh, so both must reject a poisoned value before using it. Today's fix to resolve_nous_runtime_credentials() (portal_base_url: validate the scheme, not just the hostname) hardened one twin but not the other: resolve_nous_access_token() still only checked `parsed_portal_url.hostname not in _NOUS_PORTAL_ALLOWED_HOSTS`, so an allowlisted hostname over plain HTTP (e.g. a cross-profile shared-state value poisoned to `http://portal.nousresearch.com`) passed through unchanged — sending the refresh_token bearer in cleartext, exploitable by a network-level MITM per the original NousResearch#27612/NousResearch#30611 threat model. Fix: mirror resolve_nous_runtime_credentials()'s scheme check exactly — require https, or http only for localhost/127.0.0.1 loopback. Also closes a secondary gap: the old hostname check only fired when hostname was truthy, so a malformed portal_base_url with no parseable hostname passed through unvalidated; the new check rejects that too, matching the sibling function. resolve_nous_access_token() backs managed-tool-gateway auth, nous_account, dashboard_register, nous_billing, the Chronos cron provider, and the relay self-provisioning enroll flow — a widely-reachable function, not an edge case.
What does this PR do?
The Nous Portal proxy adapter (
hermes_cli/proxy/adapters/nous_portal.py)forwards minted
agent_keybearer tokens to whateverinference_base_urlthe Portal returns in its refresh / agent-key-mint response, with no
validation beyond a trailing-slash strip:
The same field is also persisted to
~/.hermes/auth.jsonvia_save_state()and re-read byget_credential()on every proxyrequest, so a one-time poisoning sticks across restarts.

1. Network — MITM on portal.nousresearch.com during refresh

allowlisted Nous host.
Why this allowlist shape
Mirrors the conservative-default pattern used elsewhere in the
codebase (e.g.
#19597Meet node localhost binding,#21277dashboard plugin SRI integrity,
#22432Google Chat sender_typecoercion). The allowlist is a
frozensetconstant — easy for Nousto add staging / mirror hosts in a single line when needed, and the
fallback is fail-safe rather than fail-open.
