[TRTLLM-16731][fix] Autotuner: skip redundant per-profile work for exclude_from_cache ops in tuning mode - #21593
In tuning mode, AutoTuner.choose_one repeats work for ops whose TuningConfig sets exclude_from_cache=True, such as trtllm::fp8_swap_ab_gemm, whose tuning call also runs the DeepGEMM JIT warmup:
Every call is a forced cache miss. These ops skip the cache lookup in tuning mode, so every call during warmup rebuilds all optimization profiles (one per M bucket) and walks them. This happens even when the same process already profiled the same op and shapes earlier in the same autotune() context.
Inputs are prepared before the cache lookup. The per-profile loop builds dummy input tensors for every profile and then checks the cache. When the profile is already cached, those tensors are thrown away. For large buckets this is the dominant cost.
A model with many such GEMM call sites per warmup pass pays this cost on every call.
Changes in tensorrt_llm/_torch/autotuner.py:
_prepare_input_tensors runs only for profiles that miss the cache.
AutoTuner._tuned_excluded_ops records an exclude_from_cache op once every one of its profiles has a cache entry in the current autotune() context, keyed by op, runner ids, input shapes and profile settings (dynamic_tensor_specs, constraint_specs, tune_max_num_tokens). Later calls with the same key take the normal in-process cache path; a profile that failed is retried on the next call. Each autotune() context starts with an empty set and restores the enclosing context's set on exit, so a new context, a nested context or a new process still profiles the op once.
Tuning results are unchanged: the first call in a context profiles exactly as before, and later calls return the entry it stored.
Test Coverage
New test_exclude_from_cache_op_reuses_profiles_within_window in tests/unittest/_torch/misc/test_autotuner.py. It checks that:
within one context, a second call neither rebuilds profiles nor prepares inputs, and returns the same tactic;
a new context walks the profiles again but prepares no inputs for cached profiles;
a nested context does not mark the op as profiled for the enclosing context;
the same op and shapes with different profile settings are profiled again.
New test_exclude_from_cache_op_is_reprofiled_until_every_profile_is_cached: a profile that fails is retried on the next call and the op is recorded only after every profile has an entry.
tests/unittest/_torch/misc/test_autotuner.py on one B300 has the same results before and after, plus the new tests passing. Three tests fail the same way on both: two multi-rank tests that need an MPI pool, and test_cutedsl_nvfp4_heuristic_matches_full_sweep.
GPU check on one B300 with torch.ops.trtllm.fp8_swap_ab_gemm under autotune(): the tuned cache entries (522) and the output checksums are identical before and after the change.
Performance
Per-call cost under autotune() after the first call, one B300. The first call costs the same before and after.

the autotune phase drops from 96 s to 29 s;

PR Checklist
Only redundant tuning-mode work is skipped; the selected tactics are unchanged.
Unit test added. tests/unittest/_torch/misc is collected by l0_b200 and l0_h100.
AutoTuner tracks completed profiles for exclude_from_cache operations within each autotune() context. The key includes the operation, runner IDs, input shapes, dynamic and constraint specs, and token limit. The tuner marks a key complete only when every generated profile has a cache entry. It prepares input tensors only for cache misses. No current review findings were supplied, so severity counts are not available.
QA Engineer Review
Modified tests/unittest/_torch/misc/test_autotuner.py with test_exclude_from_cache_op_reuses_profiles_within_window and test_exclude_from_cache_op_is_reprofiled_until_every_profile_is_cached. The tests cover profile reuse, context isolation, changed profile settings, cache-miss input preparation, and retries when a profile lacks a cache entry. The integration test database lists a different test from this file; no manual-QA list reference was found. The author reports that the added tests passed, while three existing tests failed in both before and after runs. Coverage verdict: sufficient.
Per-File QA Perspective
tensorrt_llm/_torch/autotuner.py: Verify that completed profile records are scoped to the active tuning context and restored after nested contexts. Verify that incomplete profiles are retried and that cache hits avoid input preparation.

The autotuner tracks completed excluded-operation profiles within each autotune() context. It reuses cached profiles after all generated profiles have cache entries. It prepares input tensors only for profiles with cache misses.
autotune() saves, resets, and restores the set of completed excluded-operation keys. Keys include the operation, runner IDs, input shapes, and profile settings.
Profile reuse and retry validation tensorrt_llm/_torch/autotuner.py, tests/unittest/_torch/misc/test_autotuner.py
Input tensors are prepared only for cache misses. The autotuner marks a key complete only when every generated profile has a cache entry. Tests cover repeated calls, nested contexts, changed profile settings, and retrying an incomplete profile.
The change substantially cuts repeated autotuning work for excluded ops, and no confirmed regression affects current callers. A few bounded edge cases remain open: a future op using list-valued buckets would fail in tuning mode, and the retry handling and its test have open concerns. These can be resolved with small fixes or accepted by the owner.

Exercise a bucket added by the changed token limit.
gen_tuning_buckets=(3, 4, 5) produces the same buckets when tune_max_num_tokens becomes eight. The count assertion proves that profile generation ran, but it cannot detect a failure to profile a newly requested bucket. Use a token-limit-dependent bucket generator and assert that the new bucket receives a cache entry. As per path instructions, “Flag assertions that would pass despite a plausible regression.”

Update the bucket-generation setup in the test around `tuner.choose_one` so
increasing `tune_max_num_tokens` to eight adds a bucket not present under the
original limit. Assert that the newly added bucket receives a cache entry; do
not rely only on the `profiled` count, which can pass without verifying the new
bucket was profiled.
If the tuner retries the failed bucket but never marks the completed sweep reusable, len(profiled) can still equal four: later calls generate profiles without invoking _profile_runners. Count _optimization_profiles calls after each choose_one call and assert that the third call does not generate profiles. As per path instructions, “Flag assertions that would pass despite a plausible regression.”

The first generated profile is bucket 3, which is also the input shape. A regression that marks the operation complete after call 1 would send call 2 to the input-shape lookup. That lookup misses bucket 3, so bucket 3 is reprofiled and the counts still match [(1, 3), (2, 4), (2, 4)]. The assertion cannot detect this regression.
Failing bucket 4 makes the regression observable. With an early completion marker, call 2 returns a cache hit on bucket 3 without profiling. The counts would stay at [(1, 3), (1, 3), (1, 3)], which fails the assertion.

List-valued gen_tuning_buckets are already unhashable in the lru_cache on
_find_nearest_profile, so normalizing only the exclude_from_cache key does
not make them usable.
