Description

Supported multi-token Helix verify groups can fall through the CuTe DSL performance gate to a backend that cannot execute them. Single-token Helix decode can hit the same problem. FlashInfer TRTLLM-Gen and PrimTS do not support Helix, which leaves the fallback op. Its TRTLLM-Gen generation pads 33 to 63 heads to a 64-row Q tile whose kernels exist only precompiled, for 32-token pages. Kimi K3 with TP2/CP4 (48 local heads) and 64-token pages hits this on SM100 and SM103, with FP8 or BF16 KV.

Admit these correctness cases to CuTe DSL, including the generation portion of mixed context/generation batches. Other single-token Helix head counts keep the performance gate, since the fallback JIT-compiles their kernels for any page size. Preserve the existing exclusive-page-size fallback, metadata and dtype checks, and final kernel capability check. Kernel math and measured performance tables are unchanged.

Tracks TRTLLM-16624. Design: DCP for aggregate workloads.

Test Coverage

  • Extend CPU routing tests across Helix and ordinary attention, verify and single-token decode, mixed batches, page sizes, head counts, dtypes, architectures, and kernel rejection. Cover generation page-table offsets past context rows. The existing CPU attention parent-directory selection includes the new cpu_only cases.
  • Preserve the existing alignment and exclusive-page-size tests; provide the KV manager dtype in the routing fixture so 128-token pages follow the production eligibility rules.
  • On GB300 (SM103), the Helix MLA multi-GPU test (CP2, single-token decode, BF16 KV, 64-token pages) with CuTe DSL removed runs on the fallback and matches the reference for 16, 24, 64, 96 and 128 heads. It fails for 48 heads with Trtllm-gen kernels not found (tileSizeQ=64, numTokensPerPage=64). With this change, 48 heads runs on CuTe DSL and matches the reference. SM100 was not run; it loads the same Sm100f MLA generation cubins and makes the same kernel choice.
  • The new routing cases pass, and the changed ones fail on the previous head.
  • Applicable changed-file pre-commit checks pass.
  • Earlier feature-implementation validation on eight GB300 GPUs passed 40 bounded 128K retrieval requests and a full 1,319-question paired GSM8K comparison for TP8 versus TP2/CP4 with FP8 KV, page size 64, and DSpark maximum draft length 5. These runs do not validate this exact main port.

Full CI remains pending. This PR makes no performance claim.

Dev Engineer Review

CuteDslMlaFmha._is_supported_with_reason now allows Helix verify groups and Helix decode shapes with 33–63 heads when the TRTLLM-Gen fallback has no kernel for the page size. It also allows selected mixed context/generation batches and rejects batches with no generations before deriving the decode shape. Existing metadata checks, dtype checks, exclusive-page-size handling, and the final kernel can_implement check remain important safeguards.

The new host-side tests stub out kernel support, so they do not establish native-kernel correctness. Native regression results and CI results for the current head are not available. No performance claim is reported.

QA Engineer Review

tests/unittest/_torch/attention/test_cute_dsl_mla.py adds CPU-only routing cases for Helix verify and decode shapes, fallback availability, and mixed batches. It also tests generation-relative page-table offsets and decode metadata. The file is not found in the inspected tests/integration/test_lists/ lists. Native and current-head CI results are not available. Coverage verdict: needs follow-up.

Per-File QA Perspective

  • tensorrt_llm/_torch/attention/backends/fmha/cute_dsl_mla.py — Verify the new Helix routing paths across head counts, page sizes, and mixed-batch conditions. Confirm fallback selection when the fallback kernel exists, and confirm that can_implement rejects unsupported CuTe DSL shapes.
  • tests/unittest/_torch/attention/test_cute_dsl_mla.py — Adds CPU-only tests for routing, fallback behavior, and generation-relative decode inputs. The test file is not found in the inspected test-db/ or qa/ lists.

Explain Change →

Walkthrough

The MLA selector changes Helix routing eligibility and performance-gate exceptions. CPU-only tests cover routing across page sizes, KV-cache formats, architectures, head counts, and kernel support. A mixed-batch test checks generation-relative metadata passed to the decode operation.

The native coverage gap is real, but the comment's test-list remedy is wrong.

Add a native 48-head Helix decode case to test_cute_dsl_mla_helix.py.

The routing tests in tests/unittest/_torch/attention/test_cute_dsl_mla.py stub kernel acceptance. They check host routing only. A kernel that rejects the 48-head, FP8 KV, page-size-64 shape still passes them.

The native Helix tests in tests/unittest/_torch/attention/test_cute_dsl_mla_helix.py use num_heads = 96 and [96, 12]. The native split-plan tests use 96. None of these native tests runs 48 heads.

Add a native case that runs the 48-head, FP8 KV, page-size-64 Helix decode through the real kernel. Cover both single-token decode and multi-token verify decode. Assert kernel acceptance and output parity against the reference. Keep the file's existing SM 100, 103, or 107 skip gate.

No separate test-list entry is needed. The unittest/_torch/attention directory entries in l0_b200.yml, l0_b300.yml, and l0_gb300_multi_gpus.yml collect the file, and none of them ignores it.

Exercise the phased mixed-batch caller.

This test supplies tensors that are already generation-only, even though num_contexts=2. It therefore does not detect a regression in the caller's q and output slicing. Add a caller-level assertion with distinct context and generation sentinel rows. Assert that params.query_input and, in the non-fused path, params.output contain only the generation slice before run_mla_generation.

This admission seems narrower than the failure it fixes. Under Helix, FlashInfer TRTLLM-Gen is never selected, so a single-token Helix request that fails the perf gate below can only fall to FallbackFmha. Per _page_size_exclusive_to_cute_dsl's docstring, that op has TRTLLM-Gen MLA generation kernels for 32-token pages only, and the MLA generation cubins on main (HQk576HV512) are all P32, built as Sm100f, so SM100 and SM103 share the same set.

If that holds, other Helix FP8 page-64 single-token shapes hit the same missing-kernel failure, for example:

  • H=48 on SM100
  • H=24 (a different TP/CP split)
  • H=96 below the perf-table batch floor

Could we key this on "Helix + a page size the fallback cannot serve" (similar to _page_size_exclusive_to_cute_dsl) instead of num_heads == 48 / tokens_per_block == 64 / SM103? If SM100 does have a working page-64 path, could you point to it?

Thanks, you're right that SM103 was too narrow. SM100 has no page-64 kernel for this shape either. The HQk576HV512 generation cubins are built as Sm100f, and both architectures make the same kernel choice for it. I dropped the SM103, FP8 and page-64 conditions.

I kept a head-count condition, though, because the fallback isn't limited to 32-token pages for every head count:

  • TRTLLM-Gen pads 33-63 heads to a 64-row Q tile with a KeepsAbForGen kernel. That kernel only exists precompiled, for 32-token pages.
  • Other head counts get a SwapsAbForGen kernel, which it JIT-compiles through NVRTC for any page size.

To check this, I ran the Helix MLA multi-GPU test on GB300 with CuTe DSL removed (TLLM_FMHA_LIBS=-cute_dsl_mla; CP2, single-token decode, BF16 KV, 64-token pages):

  • 16, 24, 64, 96 and 128 heads ran on the fallback and matched the reference. For 96 heads, the log shows it JIT-compiling a ...PagedKvDenseP64...SwapsAbForGen kernel.
  • 48 heads failed with Trtllm-gen kernels not found: ... kernelType=3, ... tileSizeQ=64, ... numTokensPerPage=64.

So the condition is now: Helix, 32 < num_heads < 64, and a page size other than 32, for any KV dtype and architecture. can_implement still has the final say. This covers H=48 on SM100, the rest of that head range, BF16 KV and 128-token pages. H=24, and H=96 below the batch floor, keep the perf gate because the fallback serves them.

I didn't fold this into _page_size_exclusive_to_cute_dsl, since under Helix whether a page size is exclusive depends on the head count. With the change, H=48 on 64-token pages runs on CuTe DSL and matches the reference.

With Helix, routing away from CuTe DSL here can only land on FallbackFmha, which (see the comment on helix_fp8_page64_decode) appears to have no page-64 MLA generation kernel on SM100 either. If so, this case asserts the same missing-kernel route the PR fixes on SM103, and would flag a correct generalization as a regression. Could you confirm SM100 actually serves this shape?

Confirmed: SM100 doesn't serve it either, since it uses the same Sm100f cubins and makes the same kernel choice. That row now expects CuTe DSL. The table now covers SM100, BF16 KV, 128-token pages and 40 heads. It also checks that 24, 64 and 96 heads still go through the perf gate, since the fallback serves those.

…ernel for

Under Helix the only other MLA generation library is the fallback op,
since FlashInfer TRTLLM-Gen and PrimTS do not support Helix. Its
TRTLLM-Gen generation pads 33 to 63 heads to a 64-row Q tile whose
kernels exist only precompiled, for 32-token pages. Single-token Helix
decode at those head counts on any other page size therefore has no
kernel on SM100 or SM103, with FP8 or BF16 KV. Admit that case to
CuTe DSL in place of the 48-head, 64-token-page, FP8, SM103 special
case. Other head counts keep the performance gate, since the fallback
JIT-compiles their kernels for any page size.
