Dev Engineer Review

The change adds stability tags to options in embeddings, mooncake_master, and mooncake_pool_report. It records these options in the CLI reference and derives the gated subcommand set from registered commands. The reported option names, types, defaults, and parsing remain unchanged.

The reference loader rejects repeated scalar keys, which prevents duplicate YAML entries from silently replacing earlier entries. It allows explicit overrides of merged keys. No integration-test-list changes are indicated because the changed tests are unit tests.

QA Engineer Review

The modified tests/unittest/api_stability/test_serve_cli.py checks that reference sections match registered subcommands, compares the recorded CLI surface with live declarations, and tests duplicate-key rejection and YAML merge overrides. The supplied summary reports passing test runs and successful CI pipelines. No changed integration tests require test-db/ or manual-QA list entries. Coverage verdict: sufficient for the stated CLI-reference gate and loader behavior.

Per-File QA Perspective

  • tensorrt_llm/commands/mooncake.py: Verify stability tags in help output for the affected options. The reported command-line behavior and option definitions are unchanged.
  • tensorrt_llm/commands/serve.py: Verify stability tags in help output for embeddings. The reported option names, aliases, types, defaults, and parsing are unchanged.
  • tests/unittest/api_stability/references/trtllm_serve_cli.yaml: The reference now records option inventories for the affected subcommands and expects sections for registered subcommands. Verify the inventories against the live CLI declarations.
  • tests/unittest/api_stability/test_serve_cli.py: The tests cover registered-subcommand consistency, live-surface matching, repeated YAML keys, and merge overrides. This unit test is not listed in the integration test-db/ or manual-QA lists, which do not apply here.

Description

The CLI stability gate (tests/unittest/api_stability/test_serve_cli.py) diffs the live Click options of trtllm-serve subcommands against a reviewed reference YAML, but its subcommand list was hand-written and covered 4 of the 7 registered subcommands. The options of embeddings, mooncake_master and mooncake_pool_report — 27 options — could change without review, and a newly registered subcommand was not gated at all.

This PR closes that gap:

  • Tags the 27 options. The three subcommands' options are now declared through stability_option(..., status=...) (tensorrt_llm/commands/_serve_stability.py), like the four already-gated subcommands. The shared --telemetry/--no-telemetry decorator in tensorrt_llm/commands/mooncake.py is itself redefined through stability_option, so both of its applications are tagged.
  • Lists them in the reference YAML. tests/unittest/api_stability/references/trtllm_serve_cli.yaml gains three sections (254 lines), one entry per option with the file's seven fields; the header comment now states that every option of every registered subcommand must be listed.
  • Derives the gated list. GATED_SUBCOMMANDS becomes tuple(serve_cmd.main.commands), so a new subcommand is gated automatically. A new test, test_reference_lists_exactly_the_registered_subcommands, fails when a registered subcommand has no YAML section and when the YAML keeps a section for a subcommand that is no longer registered; its failure messages say what to add or remove and that the API review committee approves changes to the reference file.

Behavior

trtllm-serve embeddings --help, trtllm-serve mooncake_master --help and trtllm-serve mooncake_pool_report --help now show a stability tag at the start of each option's help text (as the other four subcommands already do), and the rendered CLI reference (docs/source/commands/trtllm-serve/trtllm-serve.rst, built from the live commands) shows the same tags. Option names, types, defaults and parsing do not change. The gate becomes stricter: any later change to these 27 options, or a new subcommand, fails the API-stability test until the reference YAML is updated.

Proposed statuses

Options that serve or mm_embedding_serve also expose take the status those commands give them today; options that exist only on these commands start at prototype; telemetry is beta everywhere, as on the other four subcommands. The statuses are a review decision — command owners may change any of them in review, which only changes one YAML line and one decorator argument per option.

Heads-up for in-flight work

Open PRs that add a trtllm-serve subcommand (for example #19550 / #19624, which add rerank) will, after this PR, see the gate ask for stability tags and a reference-YAML section for the new subcommand — the failure message says exactly what to add. Open PRs that edit other sections of trtllm_serve_cli.yaml (#16336, #17062, #17860, #18050, #19379, #19800, #20977, #21034, #21103 today) are unaffected: this PR only appends new sections and extends the header comment.

CI bookkeeping

None needed: no new files, no moves, no test-list change (tests/unittest/api_stability is already collected as a directory entry in l0_a10.yml), no CODEOWNERS or formatting-group change.

Test Coverage

  • pytest tests/unittest/api_stability/test_serve_cli.py tests/unittest/api_stability/test_serve_stability_helpers.py -q — 20 passed; the five TestServeCLIStability tests now cover all seven subcommands.
  • Negative checks (local only, reverted): changing a tagged option's default in mooncake.py makes test_yaml_matches_live_surface fail naming mooncake_master; registering a dummy subcommand makes test_reference_lists_exactly_the_registered_subcommands fail with the "have no section" message.
  • trtllm-serve embeddings --help | grep -c ':tag:' → 12; mooncake_master --help → 12; mooncake_pool_report --help → 3.
  • pytest tests/unittest/_torch/executor/test_mooncake_store_cli.py -q — 6 passed (drives the mooncake commands; not registered in a test list today).
  • pytest tests/unittest/usage/test_cli_telemetry.py tests/unittest/llmapi/test_disagg_telemetry_launcher.py -q — 69 passed (telemetry flag behavior unchanged).
  • Property check of the new gate logic (local, not committed): the derived list equals the registration in order; the subcommand-set test fails exactly when the YAML section set differs from the registered set, naming the missing and extra names; an untagged option on any registered subcommand fails the tag test. Checked with Hypothesis over generated registrations and reference dicts, and gated by five planted bugs (re-introducing a fixed-length list, swapping the missing/extra direction, dropping the stale-section report, reading top-level YAML keys, making the check never fail) — all five detected.
  • pre-commit run --files <the four changed files> — clean on two consecutive runs.
  • The gate runs in CI in the A10 stage (directory entry unittest/api_stability in tests/integration/test_lists/test-db/l0_a10.yml); this PR relies on that stage's log to show the gate passing with seven subcommands.

…d and gate them all

The CLI stability gate diffed the live Click options of four hand-listed
subcommands against the reference YAML, so the options of embeddings,
mooncake_master and mooncake_pool_report (27 options) could change
without review, and a new subcommand was not gated at all.

- Declare the 27 options of those three subcommands through
stability_option(..., status=...): options the gated subcommands
already expose keep the status they carry there; command-specific
options start at prototype. The only behavior change is the stability
tag now rendered at the start of each option's --help text and in the
  generated CLI reference.
- List the 27 options in the reference YAML and extend its header
  comment to the new rule.
- Derive GATED_SUBCOMMANDS from main.commands so a newly registered
subcommand is gated automatically, and add a test that the reference
YAML lists exactly the registered subcommands, failing on a missing
section and on a stale section for an unregistered subcommand.

Option names, types, defaults and parsing do not change.

Walkthrough

Serve and Mooncake CLI options now declare stability status through stability_option. The serve CLI reference inventories the affected commands. The API stability tests derive the gated subcommands from registered commands, check reference coverage, and validate YAML key handling.

yaml.safe_load keeps the last of a repeated key, so a duplicated
subcommand section or option entry collapsed into one and the gate still
passed. The reference now loads with a SafeLoader subclass that raises on
a repeated scalar key at any level; merge keys may still be overridden.
