Description

A /v1/messages request whose prompt is longer than the server's context window is not answered the way Anthropic answers it. Anthropic rejects such a request with HTTP 400 before any stream:

{"type": "error", "error": {"type": "invalid_request_error", "message": "prompt is too long: 210000 tokens > 200000 maximum"}}

Claude Code compacts its conversation when a request fails with an error that says "prompt is too long", and it reads the two counts from that format. Any other answer leaves it without a full-context signal.

On main the server answers in one of two ways, depending on where the prompt is rejected:

  • The executor runs in worker processes (the default). The worker rejects the prompt when it admits the request, but the server learns that only from the first result of the request, after the streamed response has started. A streamed request gets HTTP 200 and then an error event of type api_error reading "Internal server error". This is the case for Claude Code, which always streams.
  • The executor runs in the server process, or the request is not streamed, or the server is disaggregated (the context phase never streams). The client gets HTTP 400 invalid_request_error, in OpenAI's wording: "This model's maximum context length is ... However, your messages resulted in ... tokens."

This change answers all of them with Anthropic's 400, for streamed and non-streamed requests, on the aggregated and the disaggregated server.

  • context_length_exceeded_counts (executor/utils.py, new) reads the context length and the prompt length from the server's rejection text, with the pattern is_context_length_exceeded_message already uses.
  • prompt_too_long_message (anthropic_adapter.py, new) words the rejection as Anthropic does: prompt is too long: N tokens > M maximum. N is the prompt length. M is the longest prompt the server accepts, the context length minus one: a prompt must leave room for one generated token, and the server rejects a prompt that fills the context exactly. With M as the context length, that case would read 8192 tokens > 8192 maximum.
  • anthropic_chat_error_response (new) is the Anthropic error for a failure the chat pipeline reported. An over-length rejection becomes the 400 above. Any other failure is unchanged: a 4xx is an invalid_request_error and anything else an api_error, with the same message and status. The /v1/messages handlers of both servers use it in place of their own copies of that mapping.
  • wait_for_stream_start (new). For a streamed request, the aggregated server waits up to STREAM_ADMISSION_WAIT_S (1 s) for the first frame of the chat stream before it starts its response. A rejection in that time becomes the 400. Otherwise the stream is returned with its first frame and read as before. A prompt with a long prefill holds the response back by at most the wait.

Why a bounded wait: for a streamed request the server has no answer from a worker before the first result. A rejected request's first result is the rejection, which arrives quickly; the worker's response loop polls every 0.1 s. An accepted request's first result is its first token, after prefill. Once the response has started its status cannot change, so a 400 needs the first result before the response starts. Waiting for it without a bound would hold every streamed response, and anything it sends to keep the connection alive, until the end of prefill. A rejection slower than the wait still ends the stream with an error event in Anthropic's wording; its type is api_error, the type the stream uses for every failure.

Unchanged:

  • Chat Completions, Completions and Responses keep their wording and their context_length_exceeded code.
  • Message Batches keep their per-request error format.
  • A prompt longer than max_num_tokens with chunked prefill disabled is a different rejection ("The prompt length ... should not exceed max_num_tokens"). It keeps its wording, as on the other routes.
  • With conditional disaggregation, a request served by a generation worker alone is streamed by that worker's chat route. The worker's stream fails without the rejection text, so the frontend cannot word it.

This was found while serving models to Claude Code. The change does not depend on the model.

Test Coverage

CPU-only tests in tests/unittest/llmapi/apps/test_anthropic_routes.py, which l0_cpu.yml already lists. They run the real openai_chat handler with an engine stub, or the disaggregated frontend's real _handle_exception on a worker's error response.

  • test_over_length_prompt_is_answered_as_anthropic_answers_it[in_worker|in_process-stream|non-stream]: an engine that rejects the prompt in a worker (the first result fails) or in the server process (submitting fails). HTTP 400, invalid_request_error, Anthropic's wording, no stream.
  • test_prompt_too_long_carries_the_counts[standard|disagg-...]: a prompt that fills the context exactly, and a rejection wrapped in other text.
  • test_disagg_route_answers_a_worker_rejection[...]: a context worker's over-length 400 through the disaggregated /v1/messages route, streamed or not; a worker's other 400 and its 503 keep their status, type and message.
  • test_stream_starts_without_waiting_for_a_slow_first_token, test_rejection_after_the_wait_ends_the_stream_in_the_same_wording, test_other_failures_before_the_first_token_stay_in_the_stream, test_client_gone_before_the_first_token_leaves_nothing_running: the bounded wait, a late rejection, other failures unchanged, and a disconnect before the first token cancels the pending read and logs no error.

18 new tests. 11 fail on current main, all of them over-length cases; the other 7 pin behavior that must not change. With the change, test_anthropic_adapter.py, test_anthropic_routes.py, test_anthropic_batches.py, test_anthropic_gateway.py, test_context_length_error.py, tests/unittest/disaggregated/test_openai_disagg_server.py and tests/unittest/disaggregated/test_openai_server_stream_errors.py pass in a CPU run.

Also checked outside the test suite: generated-input properties of the wording (any counts, any surrounding text, Claude Code's reading of the counts), of the error mapping (any status), and of the wait (any frames, failure point, first-frame timing and early disconnect: the frames pass through unchanged, the source is closed and no task is left running), with planted bugs to confirm the checks fail on them.

On a build of current main, test_anthropic_adapter.py, test_anthropic_routes.py, test_serving_extensions.py, test_context_length_error.py and tests/unittest/disaggregated/test_openai_server_stream_errors.py pass: 304 tests, against 286 on main.

Dev Engineer Review

The change maps recognized context-length rejections on /v1/messages to Anthropic HTTP 400 invalid_request_error responses. The message includes the prompt token count and a maximum of one less than the context length.

For aggregated streaming requests, the handler waits up to one second for the first frame. An early context-length rejection becomes an HTTP response; a later rejection remains an in-stream error. Disaggregated routes use the shared error mapping. The supplied summary says other routes and the distinct max_num_tokens rejection behavior remain unchanged.

No current review findings were supplied. The author reports passing CPU test runs; those results were not independently verified. The comments summary reports a successful PR job and an unstable L0 merge-request pipeline.

QA Engineer Review

The modified route tests cover normal responses, validation errors, over-length prompts, streaming admission and rejection timing, cancellation, non-context-length failures, error wording, and disaggregated-worker paths. The test file is listed in tests/integration/test_lists/test-db/l0_cpu.yml. No matching manual-QA listing was found. The author reports passing CPU test runs, but they were not independently verified. Coverage verdict: sufficient.

Per-File QA Perspective

  • tensorrt_llm/executor/utils.py — Verify that context-length error messages return the correct maximum and prompt token counts, and that unmatched messages return None.
  • tensorrt_llm/serve/anthropic_adapter.py — Verify the Anthropic error envelope, status mapping, one-second stream-start wait, late stream errors, and iterator cleanup.
  • tensorrt_llm/serve/openai_disagg_server.py — Verify that disaggregated /v1/messages exceptions and non-200 chat responses use the shared error mapping.
  • tensorrt_llm/serve/openai_server.py — Verify that early stream errors return as HTTP responses and that non-streaming errors retain the expected status and message.
  • tests/unittest/llmapi/apps/test_anthropic_routes.py — Covers route-level behavior, including context-length errors, stream timing, and disaggregated paths. Listed in tests/integration/test_lists/test-db/l0_cpu.yml.

…ompt is too long", before any stream

Anthropic rejects a prompt longer than the context window with HTTP 400
invalid_request_error, "prompt is too long: N tokens > M maximum",
before any stream, and Claude Code compacts its conversation on that
wording. /v1/messages answered in OpenAI's wording instead, and a
streamed request on the default deployment (executor in worker
processes) got HTTP 200 and an "Internal server error" event: the
rejection reaches the server only as the failure of the stream's first
frame.

- context_length_exceeded_counts reads the context and prompt lengths
  from the server's rejection text.
- prompt_too_long_message words it as Anthropic does. M is the longest
prompt the server accepts (the context length minus one), so N > M
also holds for a prompt that fills the context exactly.
- anthropic_chat_error_response maps a chat-pipeline failure to the
  Anthropic error, over-length to that 400, everything else as before;
both servers' /v1/messages handlers use it.
- wait_for_stream_start: a streamed request waits up to 1 s for the
first frame before its response starts, so a rejection becomes the
  400. A slow first token is not waited for; a rejection after the wait
ends the stream with an error event in the same wording.

Other routes keep their wording and codes.

…d-in a request id

A generation result carries a request_id. The non-streamed stand-in now
has one too, so the over-length tests do not depend on which attributes
of the result the chat handler reads.

Walkthrough

The Anthropic adapter translates recognized prompt-length errors and other chat failures into Anthropic error responses. Streaming routes check for errors during startup, and disaggregated routes use the same chat-error conversion.

Changes

Anthropic error handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Parse and translate chat errors
tensorrt_llm/executor/utils.py, tensorrt_llm/serve/anthropic_adapter.py, tensorrt_llm/serve/openai_server.py, tests/unittest/llmapi/apps/test_anthropic_routes.py
The executor utility extracts context and prompt token counts. The adapter formats prompt-length errors and maps chat failures to Anthropic error types. The standard route uses this conversion, with tests covering response formats and token counts.
Handle stream startup and delayed errors
tensorrt_llm/serve/anthropic_adapter.py, tensorrt_llm/serve/openai_server.py, tests/unittest/llmapi/apps/test_anthropic_routes.py
The adapter waits up to one second for the first stream frame. It translates recognized prompt-length failures, resumes other streams, and closes the iterator when the stream ends or is cancelled. Tests cover delayed failures, successful streams, other engine failures, and disconnects.
Translate disaggregated worker errors
tensorrt_llm/serve/openai_disagg_server.py, tests/unittest/llmapi/apps/test_anthropic_routes.py
The disaggregated route uses the shared error conversion for HTTP exceptions and non-200 chat responses. Tests cover prompt-length, client, and server errors.

Validate complete SSE frame boundaries.

The test extracts only data: lines from body.splitlines() and checks payload order and text. It can therefore pass when an SSE frame’s \n\n delimiter is missing, including the final delimiter. Parse complete frames and assert the terminating delimiter, event name, and payload.

Retrying the A10 multimodal example timeout and the single-GPU/CPU stages cancelled afterward. The failure is outside this PR’s Anthropic prompt-length handling. This targeted run excludes the multi-GPU stages while their approval label is absent; it does not establish full CI coverage.
