[#20993][fix] Kimi K3, MiniMax-M3, Poolside v1 and Gemma4 tool parsers: handle tool-call arguments that cannot be decoded - #20994
The single-increment regression now covers an unparsable object or array followed immediately by a valid call. Both cases fail on the pre-drain bba24cedc6 parser because the valid call is lost, and pass with the current parser. The deep-nesting streaming regression explicitly checks that the following valid call has index 0 and the next index is 1. The single-increment cases also check the final next index.
The focused Gemma4 class passes 37 tests locally using the existing lightweight source loader. Parser implementations are real checkout sources, while protocol and unrelated heavy imports are stand-ins. This is local parser proof, not a full server or current-head CI result. Formatting, lint and test-list validation pass. The vendor-source check still fails on the unchanged flashinfer-kda-bt16 destination digest, as recorded in earlier checks. No vendored files were changed. CI still requires maintainer approval.
The Gemma4 streaming path reports each call once, when its <tool_call|> end token arrives, with the name and the parsed JSON arguments in one item. Earlier it sent the name first and raw Gemma4 argument text after it, which made the accumulated client arguments invalid JSON. A call whose arguments fail to parse, including on RecursionError, is skipped as detect_and_parse skips it, and the next call keeps the next index. A stream that stops before <tool_call|> reports no call in either path. The regression tests concatenate parameter deltas by tool index and compare the result with detect_and_parse.
parse_streaming_increment now reports every complete call the buffer holds. Before, an increment that held text and a call, or several calls, reported at most one of them, and when no increment followed, the inherited finish() dropped the rest.
detect_and_parse now keeps the text between calls and after the last call as content, as the streaming path and glm4 do. A call that is skipped adds no text in either path. The whitespace just before a call stays a difference between the two paths, because streaming sends it before it can know that a call follows, the same as in qwen3, deepseek_v3, glm4, poolside_v1 and minimax.
Four tool parsers raise, or write non-JSON arguments, when a model writes an argument value that cannot be decoded into strict JSON: nesting deeper than the recursion limit, a number with too many digits, or an infinite or NaN value. The exception leaves detect_and_parse and the streaming path, so a non-streaming request fails with HTTP 400 and a streaming request ends without data: [DONE].
As requested in review, this PR now also carries #20992 (Poolside v1) and #20997 (Gemma4), which fix the same class of problem in the same directory, so they can be reviewed together. Those two PRs are closed in favour of this one. The branch is rebased on current main (0a03c3ed05), which also resolves the conflict this PR had with main.

what changes
Kimi K3, MiniMax-M3
an argument that json.loads or the json.dumps of the arguments object rejects keeps its raw text
Poolside v1
a value is kept decoded only when it can be written as strict JSON, otherwise its raw text is kept
Gemma4

Valid arguments parse as before in all four parsers.
Kimi K3 and MiniMax-M3
Problem
Both parsers keep the raw text of an argument that json.loads rejects. Some model outputs still make them raise.

For kimi_k3 the error leaves detect_and_parse and the streaming path. For minimax_m3 it leaves detect_and_parse, which the non-streaming chat path calls directly, so the request fails with HTTP 400.
Root cause
KimiK3ToolParser._coerce_value, _parse_call_arguments and detect_and_parse catch only json.JSONDecodeError. json.loads raises a plain ValueError for a number with more than 4300 digits (the CPython integer string conversion limit) and RecursionError for deep nesting.
minimax_m3_parser._coerce_value catches ValueError and lets RecursionError through.
In both parsers a value just under the decoder's nesting limit decodes, and json.dumps of the arguments object, one level deeper, then raises RecursionError. 9997 levels is that boundary on CPython 3.12.
Fix
Both _coerce_value functions decode a value and also encode it one level deep (json.dumps([parsed])), the depth it has inside the arguments object. ValueError and RecursionError fall back to the raw text, as invalid JSON already does.
The json block path of _parse_call_arguments and the json.loads of the arguments in KimiK3ToolParser.detect_and_parse catch ValueError and RecursionError. json.JSONDecodeError is a subclass of ValueError, so the cases handled before are still handled.
Valid arguments parse as before. A sweep of nesting depths from 1 to 3000 and 9985 to 10010 (arrays and objects, argument and json block forms) raises in 76 of the tested cases on main and in none with this change.
Poolside v1
Problem
PoolsideV1ToolParser raises on some argument values the model can write.

any non-string type
RecursionError from json.loads
NaN, 1e999, [1e999]
number, array
the arguments string holds NaN or Infinity, which strict JSON parsers reject
The exception leaves both detect_and_parse and parse_streaming_increment. A non-streaming chat request then fails with HTTP 400 and the generated text is lost. A streaming request ends without its last chunks and without data: [DONE].
Root cause
_parse_argument_value in tensorrt_llm/serve/tool_parser/poolside_v1_parser.py:
json.loads(value) is guarded by (json.JSONDecodeError, ValueError), so RecursionError passes through.
int(parsed) and float(parsed) are guarded by (TypeError, ValueError). json.loads returns float("inf") for 1e999 and Infinity, int(inf) raises OverflowError, and so does float() of a very long integer.
Fix
_parse_argument_value keeps a decoded value only when json.dumps(..., allow_nan=False) can write it one level deep, which is the depth it has inside the arguments object. Otherwise it keeps the raw argument text. RecursionError from json.loads and OverflowError from the numeric conversions are caught. This is the rule glm4_parser.parse_arguments already applies to the same <arg_key>/<arg_value> format (1e309 and NaN keep their text there). Values that decode to strict JSON parse exactly as before.
The one-level-deep check matters at the decoder's nesting limit. On CPython 3.12 an array nested 9997 levels decodes, and then the json.dumps of the arguments object, one level deeper, raises RecursionError. A sweep of nesting depths from 1 to 3000 and 9980 to 10010 (arrays and objects, both parse paths) raises nothing after the change.
Gemma4
Problem
Gemma4ToolParser raises RecursionError when a tool call's arguments nest about 1000 levels deep, for example call:get_weather{opts:{a:{a:...}}} or tags:[[[...]]]. About 4k characters of model output are enough. The error leaves detect_and_parse (first parser frame gemma4_parser.py:334) and parse_streaming_increment (first parser frame gemma4_parser.py:476), so a non-streaming request fails with HTTP 400 and a streaming request ends without data: [DONE].
Root cause
_parse_gemma4_args calls itself once per nested object (gemma4_parser.py:206), and _parse_gemma4_value and _parse_gemma4_array call each other once per nested array. The handlers around both callers catch (ValueError, IndexError, TypeError, KeyError).
Fix
Both handlers also catch RecursionError. Such a call is then handled like other arguments that fail to parse. detect_and_parse logs a warning and skips the call, and the streaming path skips it the same way. The streaming path now reports a call when its end token arrives, with the name and the parsed arguments together, so a call that fails to parse leaves nothing behind in the stream. Other calls in the same output are parsed as before.
Test Coverage
New CPU-only tests in tests/unittest/llmapi/apps/test_tool_parsers.py:
TestKimiK3ToolParser::test_undecodable_json_falls_back_to_raw and test_value_that_fails_serialization_keeps_raw_text, test_minimax_m3_undecodable_json_keeps_text and test_minimax_m3_value_that_fails_serialization_keeps_text
TestPoolsideV1ToolParser::test_values_without_strict_json_keep_text (nine values, both parse paths)
TestGemma4ToolParser::test_deeply_nested_arguments_do_not_raise[object|array] and test_streaming_reports_no_call_without_end_token. test_parse_streaming_increment_multi_chunk now expects the name together with the arguments in the second chunk. test_streaming_reports_every_call_in_one_increment (five cases) checks the calls, tool indexes, prev_tool_call_arr and streamed_args_for_tool against detect_and_parse for one increment. test_text_around_calls_is_content (three cases) checks the content and calls of both paths for text after a call, text between calls, and a valid call followed by one that fails to parse.
Results on current main (0a03c3ed05), CPU, tensorrt_llm 1.4.0rc1 wheel with the tool_parser package loaded from the checkout:
Whole test_tool_parsers.py with this branch's tests on main's parsers: 35 of the new or changed tests fail (18 Poolside v1, 12 Gemma4, 3 Kimi K3, 2 MiniMax-M3), plus the 4 tests below.
Whole test_tool_parsers.py with this branch: 988 passed, 4 failed.
The same four tests fail on main and with this branch (TestQwen3CoderRequiredTools::test_required_stream_matches_complete_response[10000-True] and three TestQwen3CoderParameterRecovery::test_chat_recovery_policy_preserves_required_arguments cases). They go through postprocess_handlers and the reasoning parser, which this local setup takes from the 1.4.0rc1 wheel, so they come from the setup.

Dev Engineer Review
Kimi K3 and MiniMax M3 preserve raw argument text when decoding or nested JSON serialization fails.
Poolside v1 preserves values that cannot be represented as strict JSON. It also handles decoding, recursion, and numeric-conversion errors.
Gemma4 catches RecursionError in streaming and non-streaming parsing. Streaming waits for the call’s end token, then emits parsed JSON arguments; calls with arguments that fail to parse are skipped.
No public API changes are reported. The author reports 979 tests passed and 4 failed; the four failures also occur on main and are attributed to the local setup. Test results were not independently verified.
QA Engineer Review
tests/unittest/llmapi/apps/test_tool_parsers.py adds regression coverage for GLM4/GLM47, Gemma4, Kimi K3, and MiniMax M3. It covers malformed, deeply nested, non-finite, oversized numeric, and serialization-failure inputs, plus streaming behavior.
The test file is listed in tests/integration/test_lists/test-db/l0_cpu.yml. No manual-QA listing was found.
Coverage verdict: sufficient for the reported regression paths.

Kimi K3 and MiniMax M3 catch additional parsing and nested-serialization failures and fall back to raw argument text. Kimi K3 also applies fallback handling to JSON blocks and parsed-call arguments. Tests cover oversized, deeply nested, and serialization-failing values.
Poolside v1 checks decoded and coerced values for strict JSON compatibility. It catches recursion and overflow errors and retains trimmed raw text when parsing, coercion, or strict serialization fails. Tests cover nested JSON and numeric values.
Emit Gemma4 calls after completion tensorrt_llm/serve/tool_parser/gemma4_parser.py, tests/unittest/llmapi/apps/test_tool_parsers.py
Gemma4 streaming parsing waits for the end token before emitting a call. It skips calls whose arguments fail to parse and catches recursion errors. Tests cover incomplete calls and deeply nested arguments.
The Gemma4 streaming parser no longer emits misleading empty-argument calls when arguments fail to parse, and the main issues from earlier reviews are fixed. Two smaller items remain: several complete calls in one final streamed chunk can lose the later ones, which is existing behavior, and a test does not check the index of the call after a skipped one. Both can be handled as follow-ups.

@coderabbitai Both nitpicks are addressed in f2cd0d2. TestKimiK3ToolParser::test_value_that_fails_serialization_keeps_raw_text and test_minimax_m3_value_that_fails_serialization_keeps_text pass a value that json.loads decodes, {"probe": 1}, and patch json.dumps so the json.dumps([parsed]) probe raises RecursionError for that value only. A real nesting boundary depends on the interpreter's recursion limit, so the targeted probe failure keeps the tests portable. Both tests assert that the raw text is kept. They fail on the PR base (b7bfae8) and pass on this branch.

Cover serialization failure in the Kimi K3 raw-JSON block.
The added test covers only the argument-tag path. The raw-JSON block serializes json.loads(raw) directly, so the current json.dumps patch does not raise for that path. Add a raw-JSON case and assert that both one-shot and streaming parsing preserve the original block text.

@LeizhenZhang Thanks. I inspected both tests. Each uses valid JSON and raises RecursionError only for the targeted json.dumps([parsed]) probe. Both assert that the parser preserves the raw text. The Kimi K3 test also checks streaming.
This addresses both test-coverage concerns without relying on an interpreter-specific recursion boundary. I did not run the tests independently.
…t of JSON arguments that cannot be decoded
Both parsers fall back to the raw argument text when json.loads rejects
it, but they caught only part of what json.loads and json.dumps raise:
- kimi_k3 caught json.JSONDecodeError only. A number with more than 4300
digits makes json.loads raise a plain ValueError (the integer string
conversion limit), and deep nesting raises RecursionError. Both
_coerce_value and the json block path of _parse_call_arguments let
them out of detect_and_parse and the streaming path.
- minimax_m3 _coerce_value did not catch RecursionError.
- In both parsers a value just under the decoder's nesting limit decodes,
and then json.dumps of the arguments object, one level deeper, raises
RecursionError.
The value is now decoded only when it can also be encoded one level
deeper, and ValueError and RecursionError fall back to the raw text.

Add a Kimi K3 test and a MiniMax-M3 test where json.loads succeeds and
the json.dumps([parsed]) probe raises RecursionError. Both check that
the raw value text is kept. The probe failure is forced by patching
json.dumps for that one value, so the tests do not depend on the
interpreter's recursion limit.

…has no strict JSON form
_parse_argument_value let three exceptions out of detect_and_parse and
parse_streaming_increment:
- OverflowError from int(parsed) when json.loads returns infinity
(1e999, Infinity) for an integer argument
- OverflowError from float(parsed) for an integer with more than 308
digits in a number argument
- RecursionError from json.loads on deeply nested arrays or objects
It also returned NaN and infinity, which json.dumps writes as NaN and
Infinity, so the arguments string was not valid JSON.
A decoded value is now kept only when json.dumps spells it as strict
JSON one level deep, the depth it has inside the arguments object.
Otherwise the raw argument text is kept, as glm4_parser.parse_arguments
already does for the same arg_key/arg_value format.

…eper than the recursion limit
_parse_gemma4_args recurses once per nested object and
_parse_gemma4_value once per nested array. Arguments nested about 1000
levels deep raise RecursionError, which detect_and_parse and
parse_streaming_increment did not catch, so the request failed.
The two parse error handlers now include RecursionError. Such a call is
then handled like other arguments that fail to parse. detect_and_parse
skips the call, and the streaming path sends {} as its final arguments.
Signed-off-by: LeizhenZhang <zhangleizhen645@gmail.com>
The deeply nested arguments test now keeps the last name and
parameters sent for each tool index and asserts get_weather with {}
and search_web with {"query": "AI"}.

Catch serialization recursion failures in the non-streaming path.
json.dumps(parsed_args, ensure_ascii=False) remains outside the RecursionError handler. Python JSON serialization can raise RecursionError for deeply nested objects. If parsing succeeds first, that error can escape the non-streaming parser. Move serialization into the try block and add a regression test for this path.

Do not emit a valid empty call after argument parsing fails.
The streaming parser emits the function name before parsing completes. The base branch then streamed raw argument deltas before appending "{}" on failure. This change removes those deltas, so the client can now assemble the failed call as a valid empty-argument call. The non-streaming path skips the same call.
Buffer the function name and arguments until parsing succeeds. Discard the complete buffered call when parsing or serialization fails, including for RecursionError. Update the streaming test, which currently locks in the unsafe ("get_weather", {}) result.

Flush complete buffered arguments when generation ends early.
If generation ends after } but before EOT_TOKEN—for example, at the max_tokens limit—the parser has already emitted the function name but keeps the complete arguments in _buffer. The inherited finish() returns no calls, so the client receives empty arguments. Before this change, the removed incremental path emitted those argument characters.
Implement finish() to parse and emit a complete buffered call without requiring EOT_TOKEN. Keep incomplete buffers unchanged. Add a regression test that ends the stream after the closing brace and asserts that the arguments are emitted.

Both points reproduced on c67e919. A call whose arguments failed to parse streamed as ("get_weather", {}) while detect_and_parse skipped it. A stream that stopped after } without <tool_call|> left a call with a name and empty arguments while detect_and_parse returned no call.
Fixed in bba24ce. The streaming path now reports a call when <tool_call|> arrives, with the name and the parsed JSON arguments in one item. When parsing fails, including on RecursionError, the whole call is skipped and the next call keeps the next index. This matches detect_and_parse, and glm4 and kimi_k3 also report only complete calls. The deep nesting test now expects only search_web. test_parse_streaming_increment_multi_chunk expects the name together with the arguments in the second chunk. The new test_streaming_reports_no_call_without_end_token covers the early stop.
For the second point finish() stays the inherited no-op. detect_and_parse also drops a call that has no <tool_call|> because _extract_tool_calls stops at a missing end token. Salvaging that call only in finish() would make streaming and non-streaming report different calls. With the change above both report no call. Recovering a call cut off before its end token would change the non-streaming result too, so it fits a separate PR. The text the removed incremental path used to send in that case was Gemma4 argument syntax such as location:<|"|>NYC<|"|>, which clients could never decode as JSON.
…uments parse
The streaming path sent the function name as soon as it saw it and the
arguments at the end token. A call whose arguments then failed to parse
was completed with "{}", so the client assembled a valid empty-argument
call that detect_and_parse skips. A stream that stopped before the end
token left a call with a name and no arguments, where detect_and_parse
reports no call.
The streaming path now reports a call at its end token, with the name
and the parsed JSON arguments in one item. A call whose arguments fail
to parse, including on RecursionError, is skipped and the next call
keeps the next index. Streaming and detect_and_parse report the same
calls in both cases.

Drain complete calls from buffer in Gemma4ToolParser.parsestreamingincrement.
433-434: Major · Functional Correctness · Quick win
Drain complete calls from _buffer in Gemma4ToolParser.parse_streaming_increment.
The parser processes only the first complete call in an increment. It leaves the remainder in _buffer on both success and argument-parse failure. If no later increment arrives, the inherited finish() emits nothing, so later calls are lost. Drain complete buffered calls after both branches, and add regression cases for malformed-then-valid and valid-then-valid calls in one final increment.
The behavior exists in the merge base, so this is not a regression from the failure-handling change.

Update Gemma4ToolParser.parse_streaming_increment to continue draining complete

Add a test that asserts the toolindex of the call after a skipped call.
Add a test that asserts the tool_index of the call after a skipped call.
When argument parsing fails, this branch returns before self.current_tool_id += 1 at Line 463. The next valid call therefore keeps the index that the failed call would have used. This is the "subsequent calls retain their indices" behavior stated in the commit message.
No current test asserts this behavior. test_deeply_nested_arguments_do_not_raise groups streamed items by call.tool_index. It then sorts them and checks only name and parameters. If a regression increments current_tool_id on failure, search_web is emitted at index 1. The test still passes, because it never checks the index value. A client that expects contiguous indices starting at 0 would then see a gap.
Add assert [c.tool_index for c in calls] == [0] to the streaming half of test_deeply_nested_arguments_do_not_raise in tests/unittest/llmapi/apps/test_tool_parsers.py. Also assert streaming.current_tool_id == 1 after the stream ends.
As per path instructions: "Flag assertions that would pass despite a plausible regression".

…ne increment
parse_streaming_increment handled one step per call. It returned the
text before a call, or one complete call, and kept the rest in the
buffer until the next increment. When an increment held text and a
call, or several calls, and no increment followed, the inherited
finish() dropped what was left, while detect_and_parse reports every
complete call.
parse_streaming_increment now repeats that step until the buffer stops
changing, so it reports every complete call the buffer holds. A call
without its end token stays buffered and a call whose arguments fail
to parse is skipped, as before.
Signed-off-by: LeizhenZhang <zhangleizhen645@gmail.com>
…tent
detect_and_parse kept only the text before the first call. The streaming
path reports the text between calls and after the last call as content,
so a non-streaming response lost text that a streaming response showed.
detect_and_parse now collects the text outside every call block, as
glm4 does, and strips it as a whole. A call that is skipped, because
its arguments fail to parse or its block has no call: header, adds no
text in either path. A call with no end token still ends the content,
as in streaming. Whitespace just before a call stays a difference.
Streaming sends it before it can know that a call follows.

Description
Regression follow-up (2026-11-03)
The single-increment regression now covers an unparsable object or array followed immediately by a valid call. Both cases fail on the pre-drain
bba24cedc6parser because the valid call is lost, and pass with the current parser. The vendor-source check still fails on the unchanged
flashinfer-kda-bt16destination digest, as recorded in earlier checks. No vendored files were changed. CI still requires maintainer approval.Review follow-up (c67e919, bba24ce, be4b5b7, 58b969f)
The Gemma4 streaming path reports each call once, when its
<tool_call|>end token arrives, with the name and the parsed JSON arguments in one item. Earlier it sent the name first and raw Gemma4 argument text after it, which made the accumulated client arguments invalid JSON. A call whose arguments fail to parse, including onRecursionError, is skipped asdetect_and_parseskips it, and the next call keeps the next index. A stream that stops before<tool_call|>reports no call in either path. The regression tests concatenate parameter deltas by tool index and compare the result withdetect_and_parse.parse_streaming_incrementnow reports every complete call the buffer holds. Before, an increment that held text and a call, or several calls, reported at most one of them, and when no increment followed, the inheritedfinish()dropped the rest.detect_and_parsenow keeps the text between calls and after the last call as content, as the streaming path and glm4 do. A call that is skipped adds no text in either path. The whitespace just before a call stays a difference between the two paths, because streaming sends it before it can know that a call follows, the same as in qwen3, deepseek_v3, glm4, poolside_v1 and minimax.Fixes #20993. _parse_gemma4_argscalls itself once per nested object (gemma4_parser.py:206), and_parse_gemma4_valueand_parse_gemma4_arraycall each other once per nested array. The handlers around both callers catch(ValueError, IndexError, TypeError, KeyError).Fix
Both handlers also catch
RecursionError. Such a call is then handled like other arguments that fail to parse.detect_and_parselogs a warning and skips the call, and the streaming path skips it the same way. The streaming path now reports a call when its end token arrives, with the name and the parsed arguments together, so a call that fails to parse leaves nothing behind in the stream. Other calls in the same output are parsed as before.Test Coverage

Dev Engineer Review
RecursionErrorin streaming and non-streaming parsing. Streaming waits for the call’s end token, then emits parsed JSON arguments; calls with arguments that fail to parse are skipped.mainand are attributed to the local setup. Test results were not independently verified.QA Engineer Review
tests/unittest/llmapi/apps/test_tool_parsers.pyadds regression coverage for GLM4/GLM47, Gemma4, Kimi K3, and MiniMax M3. It covers malformed, deeply nested, non-finite, oversized numeric, and serialization-failure inputs, plus streaming behavior.tests/integration/test_lists/test-db/l0_cpu.yml.
