[None][feat] Add the HALO-R planner and relay copy for per-layer dynamic EPLB - #20887
HALO-R is a second replica planner for per-layer dynamic EPLB (moe_config.load_balancer.mode: per_layer_dynamic, MEGAMOE_CUTEDSL). It sits next to HALO-Q, which is already on main.
Planner: in every forward pass and every MoE layer, it plans from that layer's current routing. Using the routed-token counts that every rank exchanges, it moves the tokens of each overloaded rank's hottest experts to ranks with room below the balanced load.
Copy: it replicates those experts into the receivers' helper slots with a unicast NVLink relay.
One fused kernel on the auxiliary SMs.haloRFusedKernel (moeRebalanceHaloR.cu) runs on auxiliary_sms CTAs (2–16) on the copy stream. It holds the count exchange, the planner (moeRebalanceHaloRPlanner.h), the route mapping and the relay copy (moeRebalanceRelay.cuh), and it publishes READY at its end.
It reuses HALO-Q's count exchange, ordinal and route passes, its plan layout and its scheduler-group contract (generations, the route hold, the deferred route wait, the lease, the spin bound).
The shared expert's fused FC12 kernel runs on the main stream on the remaining SMs at the same time.
Pipelined relay copy. Each issuer warp's loads run ahead of its stores through a ring of shared-memory slots, and a slot is refilled as soon as the stores of its previous slice have read it. Slices are 32 KiB.
Resident-first skip-copy. With helper_slot_mode: per_layer_resident (the default), every rank keeps the same per-layer table of the expert each helper slot holds.
The relay skips a receiver whose slot already holds its expert.
An expert that a receiver keeps stays in its slot.
Both helper modes:per_layer_resident, and shared_banks, where all layers alternate between two banks and copy every helper every pass.
Helper sets without multicast objects. HALO-R's relay never stores through multicast, so its helper sets are allocated without multicast objects. This makes per-layer helper slots work at EP32: on DeepSeek-V4-Pro at EP32, binding the per-layer helper sets to multicast objects fails at startup with CUDA_ERROR_OUT_OF_MEMORY while most HBM is free. HALO-Q's helper sets are unchanged and keep their multicast objects, so HALO-Q still needs shared banks there.
Breakable prefill CUDA graphs.prefill_cuda_graph_backend: breakable captures the MoE layers, the HALO-R kernel included. Every layer call hands the device constant values, so replays need no host bookkeeping and eager calls and replays can be mixed:
READY is always 1, and each launch drains the previous READY row;
the route wait resets its counter after it passes.
Reload reset. When the backend's weights are rebound, the residency table is cleared on every rank, and ranks that reset different layers stop with an error. MegaMoE-CuteDSL refuses hot weight reload today, so this is a safeguard for when it supports one.
Fail-closed traps. A HALO-R launch that cannot plan or route (a timeout waiting for a peer, an invalid route, a bad status word) stops the process with a CUDA error before any routes or helper weights it computed are used.
Config and docs.
planner: halo_q | halo_r, with HALO-R's limits checked on the config: at most 4 helper slots per rank, an even EP size from 2 to 32, at least 4 experts per rank, and auxiliary_sms from 2 to 16. HALO-R's auxiliary_sms defaults to 16, and HALO-Q's stays 4.
The serve config schemas and the docs (examples/wide_ep/ep_load_balancer/README.md, MOE_DEVELOPER_GUIDE.md) are updated.
Design choices:
Why a unicast relay. Receivers split each replicated expert into slices. Each pulls its share from the owner and writes it to every receiver with ordinary NVLink loads and stores. Copy bandwidth then grows with the issuing CTAs and receivers, and the helper weights need no multicast stores.
Why READY. MegaMoE must not read a helper slot before its bytes have landed on every receiver. After a fence, the relay publishes one READY cell per rank. MegaMoE waits for it only before its first helper-slot tile, so token dispatch and resident-expert tiles start without waiting for the copy.
Why one fused kernel. Planning and copying in one launch per layer needs no host round trip and no second launch. A device-side route counter releases the routes to the main stream as soon as every CTA has mapped them, so the shared expert and MegaMoE's dispatch overlap the copy.
Performance against HALO-Q was measured internally on GB200 and can be shared on request.
Limitations / not in this PR:
Decode CUDA graphs: not supported. Per-layer dynamic EPLB keeps decode eager; only breakable prefill graphs are supported.
MTP: not covered. The DeepSeek-V4-Pro NVFP4 checkpoint's MTP experts are MXFP4, which MEGAMOE_CUTEDSL does not serve.
More than 32 GPUs: not supported. The HALO-R planner runs as one warp with one lane per EP rank and keeps rank sets in 32-bit masks (kMaxRanks = 32 in moeRebalanceHaloRPlanner.h), and moeRebalanceHaloR.cu asserts that this equals HALO-Q's own kMaxEp = 32. Lifting it needs a planner spread over more warps, with its per-rank state and rank masks widened, and HALO-Q's shared count-exchange and route passes widened with it.
Test Coverage
CPU unit tests (no GPU):
tests/unittest/_torch/moe/test_halo_r_planner.py covers the planner reference against worked examples and random routings, geometry validation, planner selection, and the rebind reset.
tests/unittest/_torch/moe/test_halo_r_contracts.py covers HALO-R's contract with HALO-Q's scheduler group, the kernel's trap and READY ordering, peer helper mappings, and residency reset ordering.
tests/unittest/llmapi/test_llm_args.py checks the config rejections and each planner's auxiliary_sms default on the config itself. test_trtllm_serve_config_schemas.py and usage/test_llmapi_config_capture.py cover the serve schema.
These files are marked cpu_only and are not in an L0 list yet, like HALO-Q's own CPU tests.
C++:cpp/tests/unit_tests/kernels/moe/moeRebalanceHaloRTest.cpp (gtest, registered with add_tllm_gtest) covers the planner and relay helpers.
test_halo_r checks every launch's routes and every received helper row byte for byte against a host reference plan. Its cases cover:
reference plans on 4, 12 and 16 auxiliary SMs and on a production-size bundle;
balanced and empty routing;
residency (repeats, random sequences, alternating layers, reload, stable slots) and shared banks;
READY gating under an SM hog;
breakable-graph capture and replay mixed with eager calls.
test_halo_r_traps faults on purpose: a bad status word, a READY drain timeout, a grid rendezvous timeout.
CI: test_halo_r is in l0_gb200_multi_gpus.yml (TIMEOUT 45). The traps fault every GPU of the node, so they run outside the shared CI list.
Run beyond CI, on GB200:
Correctness at 4, 8 and 32 GPUs: the multi-GPU file's cases at EP4 (one node), and at EP8 and EP32 across nodes (reference, residency, shared banks and graphs). The traps ran at EP4 (all three kinds) and at EP8 (the status word).
Real-model output coherence on DeepSeek-V4-Pro (61 layers, natural routing). Each run is compared with a stock HALO-Q control, and on the same server with a deliberately broken-routing negative control that must produce garbled output:
at EP8: per-layer and shared helper slots, eager and breakable prefill graphs;
at EP32: per-layer helper slots, and shared banks with eager and breakable graphs.
Bitwise equivalence of the fused kernel's routes and helper rows with the original separate scheduler and relay kernels, at 2, 4 and 8 auxiliary SMs, at EP8 and EP32.
The pipelined relay copy ran the multi-GPU file's cases and all three traps at EP4, and served DeepSeek-V4-Pro at EP32 with per-layer helper slots. The other runs above used the earlier copy loop.

Dev Engineer Review
HALO-R adds a second planner for per-layer dynamic EPLB. The configuration defaults to halo_q; halo_r selects the new planner and relay-copy path. The implementation adds planner logic, a fused CUDA kernel, relay work, Torch operators, and helper-residency handling.
Configuration validation and documentation describe HALO-R’s geometry and resource limits. The source changes also alter helper multicast behavior and permit breakable prefill graphs for HALO-R. Verify those paths across supported configurations, especially residency reset on backend rebinding, stream ordering, and failure handling. No completed build, test, or CI results were provided.
QA Engineer Review
The change adds CPU-only planner and contract tests, host C++ planner and relay tests, and multi-GPU relay tests. It also updates LLM-argument, schema, and configuration-capture tests. The multi-GPU test is listed in tests/integration/test_lists/test-db/l0_gb200_multi_gpus.yml with a 45-second timeout. No manual-QA list entry was found in the supplied evidence. Coverage verdict: sufficient for the added planner, configuration, and listed multi-GPU behavior; completed test results are not available.

Remove the test-only %globaltimer probe: the MoeRebalanceHaloRProbeWord
records, the probe fields of the scheduler and relay parameters, the stamps
in both kernels, the moe_rebalance_halo_r_set_probe op with its fake, and
the CPU test of its schema. test_halo_r_relay_pdl_timing read only those
records, so it goes too, together with the harness parameters that only it
used (route top-k, bundle shape, group token capacity and the helper-row
skip in _check_call). The relay's programmatic launch, its plan acquire and
the TRTLLM_HALO_R_RELAY_PDL switch are unchanged.

…-group contract
HALO-R becomes a second producer behind the scheduler-group contract that
HALO-Q merged with: the same generations, route hold, deferred route wait,
lent routes, lease, spin bound and CUDA scheduler buffers. Only the copy
endpoint and its kernel are HALO-R's own.
Kernel. The scheduler and the unicast relay run as one kernel,
haloRFusedKernel, on the auxiliary_sms CTAs on the copy stream, as HALO-Q
and its TMA copy do:
1. Scheduler role, restructured after halo_q_scheduler_body: CTA 0 exchanges
the counts, plans with one warp and builds the route prefix; the workers
compute ordinals and write every route's slot.
2. Route release: each CTA checks every status word, then adds 1 to the
group's route counter with a system-scope release. MAIN waits for
auxiliary_sms per generation with HALO-Q's cuStreamWaitValue64.
3. Relay: each CTA starts its share right after its own release. HALO-R's
plan is complete when CTA 0 publishes it, and the grid rendezvous already
proved every CTA resident, so HALO-Q's all-CTA route wait is not needed.
4. Completion: a release/acquire chain elects the last CTA, which re-checks
the status words and publishes the generation into READY.
Failure. A failing CTA traps before it releases its routes: a rendezvous,
exchange, plan or prefix wait timeout, a planner status other than OK (valid
input never yields one), or any nonzero status word, which also catches an
invalid route or a slot outside the plan's masks that a pass records and
continues past. MAIN therefore stays at its route wait, MegaMoE never reads
the failed launch's routes and no READY is published. The READY error bit,
the route-home fallback and the fixed 100 s wall-clock budget are gone; every
wait takes SchedulerSpinBound's per-launch bound. Any CUDA error in a native
call poisons the context for good, and the endpoint refuses every later call
with "quiesced group rebuild required".
Host. HaloRSlotSchedulerGroup subclasses RebalanceSlotSchedulerGroup and
overrides only __init__, which sets every attribute HALO-Q's __init__ sets,
in its collective order, and builds a HaloRRelayEndpoint instead of the TMA
endpoint. The endpoint mirrors HierarchicalSamiWeightBroadcast's lease
bookkeeping and binds one native context that prepares the launch at bind
time (stack limit, shared memory, one CTA per SM or refuse). A layer call is
one native call, moe_rebalance_halo_r_submit_fused. relay_counts() returns
launches, receiver copies and receiver skips for tests and teardown.
Configuration. planner: halo_r accepts auxiliary_sms from 2 to 16, the SMs its
relay runs on; halo_q keeps 1 to 8. The field's range
becomes 1 to 16 with a planner check, and the schemas mirror it. halo_r also
requires an even EP size from 2 to 32 and at least 4 experts per rank. Prefill
CUDA graphs are rejected for every planner again, as on main, until HALO-R's
capture support returns in its own change.
Before and after this change:
| Before | This change |
|----------------------------------------|-------------------------------------|
| haloRSchedulerKernel + haloRRelayKernel| haloRFusedKernel, one launch |
| programmatic dependent relay launch | relay phase in the same CTAs |
| 16 relay CTAs + scheduler CTAs | auxiliary_sms CTAs for both |
| moeRebalanceRelay.cu, .h | moeRebalanceRelay.cuh, device body |
| relay residency counter, MAIN waits 16 | route counter, MAIN waits ctas * g |
| READY = epoch, or the error bit | READY = generation; trap instead |
| READY drain before the exchange | none (generations only grow) |
| route-home fallback on a timeout | trap before route release |
| 3-budget plan wait, 100 s globaltimer | one SchedulerSpinBound per wait |
| submit / wait_routes / release ops | submit_fused; HALO-Q's group waits |
| plan_ready, consumer_done events | input_ready only |
| recordStream on the routes | HALO-Q's route hold |
| own buffers in halo_r_planner.py | CudaPhysicalSlotScheduler buffers |
| construction warmup launch | none; READY row zeroed, synced |
Tests: test_halo_r_contracts.py builds the group on fake natives and checks
the collective construction order, every HALO-Q attribute, generations and
the deferred route wait, the MAIN binding, the per-launch spin bound under
warmup, tuning and serving timeouts, finish with and without an event, the
route hold and abort after a failed submit, the lease, and that only
__init__ is overridden; source pins cover the native submit order and
poison, trap before release and before READY, the occupancy refusal, and no
probe, PDL or recordStream. The multi-GPU test runs eager calls, zero-token
ranks, an empty plan, alternating banks and the READY gate under an SM hog,
at 4 and 16 CTAs, and checks the relay counters. The gtest replaces the
route-home slot case with the owner's resident slot.

The relay's NVLink traffic now runs in the remote memory-sync domain, as
HALO-Q's fused kernel does, so fences and completions of kernels in the
default domain, MegaMoE's among them, do not wait for it. The context
prepares the domain and domain-map launch attributes once at bind time, when
the device has more than one domain.
Every edge out of the remote domain is already system scope: the route
release (red.release.sys), the relay's issuer fences (fence.acq_rel.sys) and
the READY publication (fence.release.sys, then multimem.st.release.sys).
Tests: a CPU test pins the attributes, their use at launch and the
system-scope release edges.

… copies
planner: halo_r now accepts helper_slot_mode: per_layer_resident, main's
default, as HALO-Q does: each MoE layer gets its own helper slots, and the
relay skips a copy into a slot that already holds the planned expert.
Table. With per-layer helper slots, each layer keeps an int32 [ep][helpers]
table of the expert each rank's helper slot holds, -1 when unknown. It
starts at -1 on every rank, and every rank applies the same plans to it, so
the tables stay identical. Shared banks keep no table and copy every helper
expert, as before.
Need sets. For a broadcast of expert e with receivers D_b, the need set is
N_b = {d in D_b : d's helper slot for the broadcast does not hold e}. The
pull partition and the stores run over N_b: the member of N_b with index i
pulls every slice j with j mod |N_b| == i and stores it to every member of
N_b. An empty N_b copies nothing. Unicast stores can leave out any single
receiver, so the skip is per receiver and slot, not per aligned team.
Update. The last CTA records each broadcast's expert in every receiver's
slot, skipped receivers included, before it publishes READY: every read of
the table in a launch precedes the completion chain, and READY then orders
the change before any later launch of the layer that acquires it. The update
runs in parallel, one thread per broadcast, from the plan; a plan assigns each
(receiver, slot) to one broadcast, so threads touch disjoint entries. The
relay counters now count copied and skipped receivers from the same need sets.
Peer mapping. peer_helper_bases() becomes peer_helper_bases(helper_set): one
collective allgather per set, cached, released with the pool. Each layer maps
its own set at construction, in layer order on every rank.
Tests: a gtest checks over 10^4 random broadcasts and tables that the need set
is exactly the receivers without the expert, that the ranks of N_b pull every
slice exactly once and store it once into every member of N_b, that nothing
goes outside N_b and that an empty N_b copies nothing. CPU tests cover the
per-set peer mapping (one allgather per set, cache, refusals), the table's
existence and -1 start, the kernel's need-set use and its update before READY,
and the lifted rejections in the config, schema and manager. The multi-GPU
test adds a repeated-routes case, whose repeat copies nothing, and per-layer
sets over three layers, and checks every rank's table against a model.

…e reloaded
With per-layer helper slots, HALO-R's table records which expert each helper
slot holds and the relay skips a receiver that already holds its expert. A
weight reload or rebind rewrites the home experts, but the helper slots still
hold copies of the old weights, so the next forward would skip those copies
and serve stale weights.
Loaders bind the layer handle again after they rewrite the weights:
cache_derived_state() calls bind_backend() on every load path. On that rebind
the handle now calls the producer's forget_helper_residency() when it has
one. HALO-R's waits for the device, resets the table to unknown (-1) and
waits again, so no earlier launch, eager or replayed, can still update it and
every later launch reads the reset table: the next forward copies every
receiver from the new weights. It refuses while a layer call is in flight,
and an aborted group refuses it as it refuses everything else. Every rank
loads the weights between the same forward passes, so every rank resets at
the same point and the tables stay identical. Shared banks keep no table, and
a producer without the hook rebinds as before.
Tests: a CPU test drives the layer handle's rebind and checks that it calls
the hook on every rebind after the first, and that a producer without it
still rebinds; contract tests check the reset between layer calls, its
refusal mid-call and after an abort, and that it is free without a table.
The multi-GPU test reloads a layer's weights between repeated routes and
checks that the next call copies every receiver and that every helper row
holds the new weights.

HALO-R filled each receiver's helper slots with its received experts in
ascending order. With per-layer helper slots, an expert that stays on a
receiver moved to another slot whenever a lower-id expert joined it, and was
copied again, so the residency skip rarely hit.
buildHelperTable now places resident experts first: a received expert that
one of the receiver's helper slots already holds keeps the lowest such slot,
and the other received experts, in ascending order, fill the free slots in
ascending order. Only the helper index bits and the slot outputs can change;
moves, rows, quotas and the receiver masks do not. Without a table, or with
nothing resident, the result is bitwise the ascending rule. CTA 0 loads the
layer's residency table (at most 128 ints) into shared memory for the
planner warp; the previous launch updated it before its READY.
Tests: a gtest compares, over random histograms and residency tables, the
plan with nothing resident bitwise against the ascending rule, and the plan
with a table against it: the same moves, rows, quotas and load, the same
experts per receiver, no expert twice in a row, every resident expert in the
lowest slot that holds it, helper bits that agree with the slots, and the same
plan on every simulated rank. The Python reference planner takes the table
too, the multi-GPU test checks every plan against it, and a new case shows an
expert keeping its slot when a lower-id expert joins its receiver.

A captured layer call replays the values it handed the device at capture.
HALO-Q's generation-valued READY and its accumulated route target would let
every replay after the first pass on stale values, so per-layer dynamic EPLB
rejected prefill CUDA graphs. HALO-R now hands the device only constant
values, and planner: halo_r with prefill_cuda_graph_backend: breakable is
admitted. Decode CUDA graphs stay off and other prefill backends stay
rejected, for both planners.
READY. Every launch publishes 1. From its second epoch on, CTA 0 first waits
until every rank's previous launch of the layer has published into this
rank's READY row, zeroes the row, and only then enters the count exchange; a
peer publishes this epoch's READY only after that exchange, so the gate
cannot pass on the previous epoch's cells. The drain and the exchange share
one spin bound, and a drain timeout traps before the route release.
plan_finish lends the constant 1.
Route counter. MAIN's route wait is one batched stream memory operation:
wait until the counter reaches auxiliary_sms, then write 0. The kernel never
reads the counter; every increment of a launch precedes the reset, and the
next launch's increments follow input_ready, which MAIN records after it.
MAIN. HALO-Q binds MAIN once for life, but the breakable runner warms up and
captures on its own capture stream and replays on the execution stream. MAIN
is now validated per layer call and may change only between calls: a change
records an event on the old MAIN and makes the new MAIN wait for it before
the launch, so the new route wait follows the old reset. A change inside a
call, or into a stream that is capturing, raises.
Join. finish() joins COPY into MAIN on every call: a capture needs it,
because COPY is forked natively, and an eager call's kernel tail must precede
a replay of the same layer. MAIN waits only for the tail after READY.
The group overrides four more methods (_check_owner, _wait_route_epoch,
plan_finish, finish); the native context gains moe_rebalance_halo_r_wait_routes
and moe_rebalance_halo_r_join, binds this rank's READY row, and no longer
refuses capture. Every native call checks the sticky poison first.
Tests: contract tests check the constant READY and route wait, the fenced
MAIN change and its refusals, the join on every finish, and pin the batched
wait, the join and the drain. The multi-GPU test now runs on one node or
across nodes under trtllm-llmapi-launch (HALO_R_TEST_EP, HALO_R_TEST_SEEDS),
and its CI time limit grows to 45 minutes for the new cases. New cases: a
graph captured once and replayed with fresh routes, three layers in a graph
in both helper modes, 200 steps of eager calls and replays interleaved with
MAIN changing, a switch into a capturing stream, the READY gate under an SM
hog in a graph, and a status word that traps its rank before the route

The HALO-R section of the per-layer dynamic EPLB README described the
earlier design: two kernels, a relay on 16 fixed CTAs, shared banks only and
READY epochs. It now describes the current one: one kernel on 2 to 16
auxiliary SMs, both helper slot modes with the per-receiver skip, slot
stability and the reset on a weight reload, the even-EP and home-expert
limits, constant-valued layer calls for breakable prefill graphs, and fail-
closed behaviour. The auxiliary_sms constraint names both planners' ranges,
and the example drops the shared-banks requirement.
The MoE developer guide's HALO-R entry now describes the subclass of
HALO-Q's scheduler group, the copy endpoint, trap before route release, the
residency table and the four CUDA-graph mechanisms, and points to the
contract tests that pin the coupling. The package docstring says HALO-R runs
as one kernel behind the same contract.

…e test store from rank 0's host
The repeated-routes case overwrote rank 1's helper row with a sentinel, but
in its routes rank 1 owns a hot expert and never receives one, so the case
could only report itself void. It now takes the first rank whose helper slot
0 received an expert, from the residency model that every rank shares.
The gloo store of the multi-GPU test now listens on rank 0's host address,
which every rank on every node can reach, instead of binding the wildcard.

Each issuer warp of the relay now keeps two 8 KiB slots, one per bank, and
a CTA runs at most 9 issuer warps; before, the slots came in fours and the
shared memory made 6 issuer warps.
Two slots per issuer let more issuer warps, and so more loads in flight,
fit in the shared memory.
The ring needs 9 x 2 slots of 8208 bytes plus the work table, which the
dynamic shared memory of every launch holds: the launch keeps the TMA
copy's slot budget, sized per CTA, so the grid size (auxiliary_sms) does
not change it. The batch bookkeeping shrinks to one slice per bank: 64
registers, no spills, and a 64-byte stack frame instead of 368.

…epoch
The first launch of a layer skipped the READY drain, which it recognized by
its epoch, 1. The epoch is a 32-bit counter, so after 2^32 launches of one
layer the launches with epochs 0 and 1 would skip it too, and MegaMoE's gate
would open on the previous launch's READY cells: stale helper reads.
The group now sets the READY row to 1 when it is built, as a launch before
the first would leave it, and every launch drains it before its count
exchange. A peer publishes into this row only after an exchange that this
rank enters after its drain, so the initial 1 can never satisfy a gate.
Signed-off-by: Itamar Rosenfeld Rauch <irauch@nvidia.com>
…together
Every rank derives each broadcast's need set from its own copy of the
residency table, so the tables must stay identical. A loader that rewrote
the expert weights on some ranks only, and reset only their tables, would
leave helper slices that no rank copies: MegaMoE would read stale or torn
helper weights, and no trap would fire.
forget_helper_residency is now an EP collective. The ranks exchange the
layer and the count of its resets and raise if any rank differs, before
any table changes. A rank that skips the call leaves its peers waiting in
the exchange, so its own next launch traps at the count exchange. Groups
without per-layer helper slots keep no table and exchange nothing.

The MAIN-to-MAIN fence orders a new MAIN after the old one only when the
host sees MAIN change. Graph replays run no host code: after a capture the
host's MAIN stays the capture stream while replays run on the execution
stream, so an eager call on the capture stream after a replay gets no
fence. The breakable runner orders it with wait_stream before each warmup;
the docstring and the developer guide now state that the caller must.
Also: relay_counts counts replayed launches only after a device
synchronization; forget_helper_residency is collective; and the
auxiliary_sms bound no longer claims a bandwidth figure that was measured
on another relay.

…ADY gate
The multi-GPU HALO-R tests compared only the final state after a device
synchronization, so a route wait that passed early or a READY gate that
opened on the previous launch's cells went unseen: every check ran after
the relay had finished.
Each layer call now holds the copy stream back for 2 ms before the kernel
and queues on MAIN, as MegaMoE does, a copy of the lent routes right after
the route wait, a READY gate on the SMs the kernel leaves free, and a copy
of this rank's helper rows once the gate opens; captured calls write the
same copies on every replay. Every launch's copies are checked against its
own reference plan, so an early route pass or gate shows as the previous
launch's routes or helper rows. Every check also requires the route
counter to be 0 and no gate to have timed out. Hot experts change every
step, so consecutive launches differ.
A layer's final helper rows are compared only while no later layer on the
same shared bank has refilled them; three layers captured on two shared
banks no longer compare layer 0 with layer 2's rows.
The cases are named by behaviour, and the support for running the file on
older builds and the cross-build equivalence dump are gone. Cases that need a
particular EP size, or routes that give some rank a helper expert, skip
instead of failing.
The trap cases move to test_halo_r_traps and add a READY cell that never
arrives and a CTA that cannot become resident to the status word; the
failing rank must trap in that call and its peers in that call or the
next, with no wall-clock bound. They fault every GPU of the node, so the
CI list now names test_halo_r only.

…aunch
The contract pins covered the status-word traps before the route release
and before READY. Every failure of the scheduler role, including the READY
drain and grid rendezvous timeouts, must also trap: one that returned
instead would leave MAIN waiting for a route release that never comes. The
new pin lists the seven failure reasons and checks that each reaches the
kernel through schedulerRole, which traps and returns before the release.

With the test's small bundle the relay finishes before MAIN copies the
helper rows after the READY gate, so a gate that opened on the previous
launch's READY cells (a missing drain) went unseen; with the bundle of a
production model (hidden 7168, intermediate 3072, about 37 MB per expert)
the copy catches it. The reference case now also runs on that bundle.

Main's shared-slot pool binds every helper set to one multicast object
per HALO level. At EP 32 there are four levels: 30 objects per set across
the fabric and 8 binds per rank. With per_layer_resident on
DeepSeek-V4-Pro (61 MoE layers) at EP 32, binding the 61st layer's set
fails with CUDA_ERROR_OUT_OF_MEMORY while over 180 GiB of HBM is free.
HALO-R never stores through those objects. Its relay writes peers'
helper rows through unicast mappings of their chunks
(peer_helper_bases), and its READY publish uses the record page's
multicast row.
- The manager passes helper_multicast = (planner == "halo_q") to the
arena provider. The planner is the switch; there is no new config field.
- With helper_multicast off, _SharedSlotPool creates only the helper
chunks: no multicast object, bind or view mapping. build_layer returns
the layer's base LiveWeightArena, whose helper planes have
mc_view=None, with no HALO levels. The record pages (READY terminals
and small planes) keep their multicast objects.
- sami's LiveWeightArena.bind accepts mc_view=None. It skips that
plane's multicast checks and returns no multicast destinations, so
HALO-R's arena still passes every unicast-view check.
HierarchicalLiveWeightArena.bind is unchanged and still refuses such an
arena, so the HALO-Q copy cannot use it.
HALO-Q-owned files change only where HALO-R's arena needs them to.
sami/arena.py gets the None exemption. per_layer_dynamic_eplb/arena.py
and manager.py get the flag and its plumbing. With planner halo_q the
pool runs the same code as before and builds the same multicast specs.
Tests: CPU tests pin HALO-Q's helper-set multicast specs (they also pass
on the code before this change) and show that HALO-R's sets create no
multicast object. They also cover the provider flag for each planner and
helper mode, the base arena binding without an alias, and the
hierarchical bind refusing such an arena. The multi-GPU relay test
asserts that its HALO-R arenas have no HALO levels and no multicast
destinations.

The reference case covered 4 and 16 auxiliary SMs. 12 is a CTA count
that is not a power of two, so it shows that the relay split and the
route-counter release do not assume one. It now checks routes and every
helper row byte for byte at 12, like the other reference cases.
Signed-off-by: Itamar Rosenfeld Rauch <irauch@nvidia.com>
An unset `auxiliary_sms` now gives HALO-R 16 SMs, the most it supports:
its relay copy runs one CTA per auxiliary SM, so they set its copy
bandwidth. HALO-Q keeps 4. The field keeps its default of 4, and the
model validator sets 16 only for `planner: halo_r` with the field unset,
so HALO-Q validates exactly as before and an explicit value for either
planner is kept and checked against the same bounds. The field and
planner descriptions, both serve schemas and the EPLB README state both
defaults.
Tests: CPU tests cover the default for each planner (dictionary and
YAML input), explicit values for both planners, and the bound errors.
Signed-off-by: Itamar Rosenfeld Rauch <irauch@nvidia.com>
Setting HALO-R's default of 16 in the validator marked `auxiliary_sms` as
set, so a resolved HALO-R config looked like an explicit 16. Re-planning
it to halo_q through an exclude_unset dump then failed HALO-Q's bound of
8. The validator now drops the field from `model_fields_set` after it
resolves the default, as HALO-Q's field default is, so a dump re-planned
to halo_q gets 4.
Tests: the default test checks that neither planner marks the field
set, and a resolved HALO-R config dumped with exclude_unset and
re-planned to halo_q gets 4.

Two parametrize lists in the HALO-R config tests did not match yapf
0.43.0, which formats this file. Formatting only; no test changes.
Signed-off-by: Itamar Rosenfeld Rauch <irauch@nvidia.com>
The relay copy loop now reports each bulk group it commits and each run of
plain stores, and ends through one completion hook that keeps today's wait
and fences. The hooks do nothing else.
The faster copy loop in the next two commits is written around these hooks.
No behaviour change: the fused kernel's SASS is identical to the parent's.
The relay source check counted the need-set reads in relayIssue, and the
completion report adds one. It now checks what the count stood for: the
loop reads the need set and never the plan's whole receiver mask.
Signed-off-by: Itamar Rosenfeld Rauch <irauch@nvidia.com>
Each relay issuer now keeps a ring of slots: slice n uses slot n mod slots, and up to
slots - 1 loads stay in flight while the issuer stores. As soon as slice n's stores are
issued, the slot of slice n - 1 is refilled, once its stores have read it. Before, an
issuer waited for each load before it issued the next, so it kept one load in flight.
The relay now runs 6 issuer warps with 4 slots each, in the same shared memory. The
work assignment, the addresses and the store-completion hooks are unchanged; each bulk
group still holds one slice of one broadcast.
Signed-off-by: Itamar Rosenfeld Rauch <irauch@nvidia.com>
… 3 slots
A relay issuer completes about one slice per NVLink round trip whatever the slice size,
so the SM's copy rate grows with the slice. The ring now copies 32 KiB slices, and the
relay's shared memory holds 2 issuers of 3 slots each at that size.
The four large planes of a V4-Pro bundle are 32 KiB multiples. The Python mirror of the
slice size, which only bounds the work-item count, and the README follow.

Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win
Format the producer log message before you pass it to logger.info.
This call passes printf-style placeholders and separate arguments. tensorrt_llm.logger joins its arguments and does not interpolate %s/%d. The log line therefore contains the literal %s, %d markers followed by the raw values. Use one f-string.
Based on learnings: "use tensorrt_llm.logger arguments that are already formatted because its logging methods join arguments rather than performing Python printf-style %d or %s interpolation."

Thanks for the detailed description and the extensive tests. The default halo_q path is unchanged; the problems are in the new opt-in HALO-R paths, mostly around the newly admitted breakable prefill CUDA graphs. Counts: 5 Blockers, 1 Possibly blocking, 8 Required and 22 Nice to have; the items without an anchor in the diff are listed below, everything else is inline.
[Required] The Test Coverage section says the cpu_only files "are not in an L0 list yet", but l0_cpu.yml:155 runs unittest/_torch/moe pre-merge with -m cpu_only (tests/unittest/conftest.py:283-294 collects any file containing pytest.mark.cpu_only), so test_halo_r_planner.py and test_halo_r_contracts.py, including the source-text checks over moeRebalanceHaloR.cu, already gate merges. Please correct the description.
[Required] The multi-GPU relatedFileList in jenkins/L0_MergeRequest.groovy covers cpp/tensorrt_llm/kernels/moe/loadBalance/ and tensorrt_llm/_torch/moe/ but not cpp/tensorrt_llm/thop/moe/loadBalance/ (only three thop files at :1904-1906), so a later PR that touches only moeRebalanceHaloROp.cpp (route wait, join, poisoning) will not run test_halo_r pre-merge. Please add that path.
[Nice to have] No CI has run on this revision yet, and the GB200 multi-GPU stages that run test_halo_r need the ci: full pre-merge approved label (jenkins/L0_MergeRequest.groovy:1197-1236). Since the outer entry only reports test_unittests_v2, please attach the per-case test_halo_r results (stage log or moe-results XML) and the entry's duration against its 45-minute timeout.
[Nice to have] On coderabbitai's open thread at halo_r_planner.py:656: tensorrt_llm.logger does apply printf-style arguments (tensorrt_llm/logger.py:276-294), so the formatting is fine. The real issue with that call is its level: it logs at INFO once per MoE layer per rank (about 2,000 identical lines for DeepSeek-V4 at EP32), while HALO-Q logs the same event at debug (planner.py:277).
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
[Blocker] HALO-R fails on the default CUDA stream, and only after the collective kernel has already launched. HaloRSlotSchedulerGroup._check_owner (halo_r_planner.py:681-700) accepts the legacy default stream (handle 0, priority 0) as MAIN, submit_fused then launches the kernel on every rank, and only wait_routes(0) hits this check; HaloRRelayEndpoint.wait_routes then sets _handoff_aborted (halo_r_planner.py:394-398), so every later call of that layer raises. HALO-Q passes handle 0 to cuStreamWaitValue64 and works (planner.py:321-326).
This is reached by the documented per-layer dynamic EPLB arm of examples/layer_wise_benchmarks (README.md:133-137; run.py:442-445 runs eagerly on the default stream) as soon as the YAML sets planner: halo_r. PyExecutor serving uses a non-default execution_stream and is not affected, and every HALO-R test uses an explicit stream, so nothing catches it.
Fix: accept handle 0 here (cuStreamBatchMemOp works on the legacy stream), or reject the default stream in _check_owner before anything is launched, with a message that HALO-R needs a non-default MAIN stream; a test that runs one layer on the default stream would pin it.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
[Blocker] This bound is ep times stricter than the planner keys need, and it is only enforced here, at bind, after the whole checkpoint has loaded. A key stores rows * (1 + sendWeight) (moeRebalanceHaloRPlanner.h:288, :300) where rows is capped by the best receiver room, room = target - load <= target, target = ceil(total / ep) (:602), and each rank submits at most routeCapacity routes (moeRebalanceHaloROp.cpp:223-227). So rows <= routeCapacity, and the comment above ("bounded by all routed tokens") does not describe what the key holds.
With send_weight = 0 the check is ep * max_tokens_per_rank * top_k < 2^24. EP32 with a top-8 model and max_num_tokens: 65536 (MegaMoE's per-rank maximum, token_protocol.py:30), or a top-16 model at >= 32768 tokens per rank, passes config validation, loads all weights, and then every MoE layer fails to bind with "overflows the planner's candidate keys"; the same YAML starts with halo_q. DeepSeek-V4 (top-6) never reaches it.
Fix: bound routeCapacity * (1 + sendWeight) and correct the comment; check whatever bound remains before weights load (validate_halo_r_geometry or the per-layer config check, with an error that names max_num_tokens), and list it with the other HALO-R limits in the README.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
[Blocker] Under prefill_cuda_graph_backend: breakable, this route wait and the HALO-R kernel are captured as sibling nodes with no graph edge between them. submitFused forks COPY from MAIN (:236-238), this WAIT_VALUE_64 >= ctas (no timeout) is queued on MAIN, and the only COPY->MAIN edge is join() in finish(), after MegaMoE. The order exists only through memory, which the cuStreamBatchMemOp / cuGraphAddBatchMemOpNode docs warn against: "Synchronization ordering established through this API is not visible to CUDA. CUDA tasks that are (even indirectly) ordered by this API should also have that order expressed with CUDA-visible dependencies such as events."
If the graph executor places the wait node ahead of the kernel node on one queue, the replay hangs that rank with no error and its peers trap after the spin bound. Eager mode is safe because the host submits the kernel first; the GB200 replay tests passing does not rule out the other mapping (the eager path already needs CUDA_SCALE_LAUNCH_QUEUES=4x, which does not govern how graph branches map to queues).
Please give MAIN a CUDA-visible edge to the kernel's start before this wait (e.g. cudaLaunchAttributeLaunchCompletionEvent plus an event wait, if it captures cleanly), or use a bounded device-side wait in graph mode. Dumping the captured graph and replaying with CUDA_DEVICE_MAX_CONNECTIONS=1 would show whether the edge is missing in practice.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
[Blocker] A failed breakable capture turns into a hang here. MoeLoadBalancerIterContext wraps the outer forward (engine/runners/decoder/runner.py:789-797) while BreakableCUDAGraphCapture wraps only the decoder body (breakable_cuda_graph_runner.py:222-226). If anything raises between a layer's route() and MegaMoE's route wait during capture (e.g. a graph-pool OOM in quantize_input), the capture ends first, and then abort_iter -> finish_replica_plan -> wait_for_routes -> this call queues an eager WAIT_VALUE_64 >= ctas on the capture stream (still MAIN, so _check_owner returns early). The kernel it waits for only existed in the discarded graph and the eager warmup left the counter at 0, so the wait never passes; PyExecutor then calls shutdown() -> torch.cuda.synchronize() (py_executor.py:1590-1594, :2578) and hangs instead of reporting the capture error. HALO-Q never runs under prefill capture, so this path is new.
Fix: remember that the pending launch was captured, and when the plan is aborted after that capture ended, skip the route wait and the join (or reset the counter) rather than waiting for a kernel that never ran. A test that raises inside a captured layer and then synchronizes would pin it.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
[Blocker] Admitting halo_r + breakable here means each prefill bucket's first execution happens in the capture pass, which runs under moe_comm_serving_timeouts() (graphs.py:358-362, :742-745). HALO-R's count exchange and READY drain then wait with the serving spin bound (~300 s by default, or a shorter TRTLLM_MOE_COMM_TIMEOUT_SEC) instead of the 1800 s warmup bound. The earlier warmups run only 1, 2 and the max token count (decoder/warmup.py:326-357, :1178-1187) while the default buckets are 1..128 and 256..3072 (llm_args.py:6706-6707), and moe_comm_timeout_guard.py:17-20 itself notes that one-time per-rank work can delay a healthy rank by minutes.
If one rank is held up before a layer's HALO-R submit for longer than that bound, the other ranks' kernels trap (moeRebalanceHaloR.cu:250-266) and the whole EP group dies at startup. Before this change the combination was rejected, so per-layer dynamic EPLB never ran in this pass.
Please run each prefill bucket once under the warmup timeouts before the serving-timeout capture pass (as the decode warmup-only pass does), or keep HALO-R's spin bound at the warmup value until a bucket has run once.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
[Nice to have] A few serializations on HALO-R's own critical path: thread 0 polls the ep READY cells one by one here (HALO-Q polls one cell per thread), firstFailedStatus (:131) does 8 dependent volatile loads with early exit before every route release, materializeSelectedRoutes drops HALO-Q's hot-route batching, and thread 0 alone builds the relay work table (moeRebalanceRelay.cuh:176). Lane-parallel polling with a ballot would likely save a few microseconds per layer launch; worth an nsys look at EP32.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
[Nice to have] This join runs on every layer call even when no graph exists (prefill graphs are off by default): an op dispatch, a lock and an event record/wait per MoE layer per step. Startup also zeroes and then refills each layer's READY row with two device syncs and barriers. Joining only when capturing or replaying (or letting the breakable runner wait_stream the copy stream), and initializing READY once in allocate_rebalance_arena, would avoid both.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
[Nice to have] This is a performance feature, but the PR has no numbers. Please add the GB200 HALO-Q vs HALO-R results (model, EP, tokens per rank, auxiliary_sms 4/8/12/16 per helper mode, per-layer MoE time and end-to-end); they would also justify taking 16 SMs by default (HALO-Q uses 4) and the final 2 x 3 x 32 KiB relay parameters. The description says the EP8/EP32, bitwise-equivalence and graph runs used the earlier copy loop.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
[Nice to have] Small comment and naming fixes: "three differences" is followed by four; moeRebalanceHaloR.h:46 and op:281-282 say the counters are also read at teardown (only tests read them); moeRebalanceRelay.cuh:197 says it returns issuers and slots (only issuers); op:297 "Releases the event" (there are two); halo_r::kMaxBroadcasts (128) vs HALO-Q's kMaxBroadcasts (384) and two different PlanFields share names; "hot" means three different things; and the in-source arch guards (SM90 / CUDA 12.8) do not match the CMake gate (SM100 family / CUDA 13.1).
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
[Nice to have] "Only the copy endpoint differs" contradicts the four overridden hooks listed further down. Under HALO-R the inherited broadcaster holds a unicast relay and _route_epoch is a counter reset to 0 on every call; shared messages still say HALO-Q/TMA (planner.py:55, :106, :345, :376; manager.py:151), so HALO-R errors and timeout logs mention HALO-Q. The 29 positional arguments to moe_rebalance_halo_r_create (:227-257) would be safer passed by schema name.

Description
HALO-R is a second replica planner for per-layer dynamic EPLB (
moe_config.load_balancer.mode: per_layer_dynamic,MEGAMOE_CUTEDSL). It sits next to HALO-Q, which is already on main.planner: halo_rselects it;planner: halo_q(the default) keeps today's behaviour. What this PR adds on top of HALO-Q:
haloRFusedKernel(moeRebalanceHaloR.cu) runs onauxiliary_smsCTAs (2–16) on the copy stream. It holds the count exchange, the planner (moeRebalanceHaloRPlanner.h), the route mapping and the relay copy (moeRebalanceRelay.cuh), and it publishes READY at its end.helper_slot_mode: per_layer_resident(the default), every rank keeps the same per-layer table of the expert each helper slot holds.per_layer_resident, andshared_banks, where all layers alternate between two banks and copy every helper every pass.prefill_cuda_graph_backend: breakablecaptures the MoE layers, the HALO-R kernel included. HALO-R adds a second planner for per-layer dynamic EPLB. The configuration defaults to
halo_q;halo_rselects the new planner and relay-copy path. The implementation adds planner logic, a fused CUDA kernel, relay work, Torch operators, and helper-residency handling.Configuration validation and documentation describe HALO-R’s geometry and resource limits.
The multi-GPU test is listed in
tests/integration/test_lists/test-db/l0_gb200_multi_gpus.ymlwith a 45-second timeout. No manual-QA list entry was found in the supplied evidence. Coverage verdict: sufficient for the added planner, configuration, and listed multi-GPU behavior; completed test results are not available.Per-File QA Perspective
