Dev Engineer Review

The change adds skip_prefix_reuse across C++, Python, bindings, KV cache managers, connectors, and schedulers. Context-logit requests now bypass cached-prefix reuse while retaining computed blocks for later requests.

Incomplete context logits now produce terminal errors instead of misaligned prompt logprobs. OpenEngine reports incomplete prompt output as an error and disables prompt logprobs for generation_only requests.

Main regression risks are coordination between V1, V2, connector reservations, speculative recompute, and streaming cleanup. Review finding counts are unavailable.

QA Engineer Review

Modified tests cover KV cache reuse, prompt logprobs, context-logit failures, worker refusal handling, OpenEngine streaming, connectors, and public request behavior. Coverage includes cold, full-prefix, partial-prefix, sliding-window, streaming, non-streaming, CPU, CUDA, and disaggregated paths.

The reported test_kv_cache_v2_vocab_size.py failures are unrelated. No changed test-list files or matching test-list entries were identified in the supplied repository results. Coverage verdict: needs follow-up.

Description

Problem. With KV cache block reuse on, a request asking for prompt logprobs returns incomplete and misaligned scores whenever part of its prompt is cached. The engine logs Because of KV cache reuse, not all context logits could be produced for request .... Through OpenEngine gRPC, Dynamo then rejects the response (prompt token is missing its logprob; reproduction in ai-dynamo/dynamo#16816, seen on 1.3.0rc29 with Qwen3-0.6B, aggregated and disaggregated).

Root cause.

  • Prompt logprobs are derived from context logits.
  • Context logits exist only for tokens the forward pass computes, so a request whose prefix is reused gets logits for the uncached suffix only.
  • _compute_pytorch_prompt_logprobs pairs logits row t with prompt token t + 1 counting from the start of the prompt. The suffix's scores therefore land on the leading prompt tokens, and the rest of the prompt is unscored.
  • OpenEngine's [None, *prompt_logprobs] alignment is correct for a complete list and cannot repair a short one.

This is the bug behind nvbugs/5577178. Its FIXME and test skips are removed here.

Fix. Requests that return context logits, including those asking for prompt logprobs, skip prefix reuse. A new per-request LlmRequest.skip_prefix_reuse flag (C++ setSkipPrefixReuse) is set for them, and both KV cache managers honour it. Their computed blocks are still committed for later requests, and requests without context logits keep reusing the cache.

  • KV cache manager V2 (the default on main): the reuse claim is capped at 0 using the existing claim-limit mechanism. The cap also applies to KV connector prefix reservations and to the joint draft-pool pairing.
  • KV cache manager V1 (used by 1.3.0rc29's "auto" default), in the C++ block manager:
    • analyzePrefixReuse reports no reusable prefix, so the capacity and micro-batch schedulers (C++ and Python, including the multimodal ones) budget the whole prompt.
    • claimMatchingBlocks claims nothing, and the KV connector is not asked for an external prefix. The request gets fresh blocks from position 0, and they are stored for reuse as usual.
    • Shared cached blocks are never rewritten. Sliding-window attention, hybrid recurrent state and two-model drafting need no special handling, because the draft manager reads the same flag.
  • Never misalign: if context logits are still shorter than the prompt, that request fails with a clear error and is cancelled in the engine. Engine responses still in flight for it, and its final cancellation, are dropped rather than delivered after the error. Scores are never attributed to the wrong tokens.
  • OpenEngine:
    • A PromptOutput with missing scores becomes an error event instead.
    • An error event now ends the stream and cancels the engine request. Previously generation kept streaming after, for example, the oversized-prompt-logprobs error.
    • The generation_only leg no longer requests prompt logprobs. It never computes prompt logits, and previously failed on an assertion. The context_only leg's PromptOutput carries the prompt scores.
  • The first-token convention (no score for prompt position 0) is unchanged.

Cost and behavior changes.

  • Requests that ask for prompt logprobs or context logits always compute their whole prompt: no compute reuse, and cached_prompt_tokens reports 0 for them. Other requests are unaffected.
  • kv.bypass_prefix_cache is still rejected by OpenEngine; prompt-logprob requests no longer need it.
  • Not in scope: additional model outputs with gather_context have the same suffix-only behavior and still only log a warning.

Test Coverage

  • tests/unittest/_torch/sampler/test_logits_logprobs.py::test_prompt_logprobs_complete_with_kv_cache_reuse (new, GPU):
    • Runs on V1, V1 with sliding-window attention, and V2, streaming and non-streaming.
    • Compares warm requests with identical token IDs against a cold run: every position has its selected-token score and top-2 candidates, matching cold.
    • Repeats the check for a partial-prefix hit.
    • Verifies that a request without prompt logprobs still reuses the cache.
    • Fails 6/6 with skip_prefix_reuse forced off.
  • test_generation_with_return_logits with reuse_cache and gather_context_logits is no longer skipped. Prompt logprobs tests now run with block reuse enabled.
  • cpp/tests/unit_tests/batch_manager/kvCacheManagerTest.cpp (new):
    • AddSequenceBatchSkipPrefixReuseClaimsNothingButStoresItsBlocks: no reuse credit or claim on a cached prompt, and the skipping request's own blocks are reused by a later request.
    • KvCacheConnector_SkipPrefixReuseIsNotQueried: the connector is not asked for a skipping request.
  • tests/unittest/_torch/executor/kv_cache/test_skip_prefix_reuse.py (new, CPU): the flag follows return_context_logits, and the V2 claim cap.
  • tests/unittest/_torch/executor/kv_cache/test_kvcm2_integration.py::test_a_prefix_reuse_skipping_request_claims_nothing_but_commits_its_blocks (new): uses the real V2 manager.
  • tests/unittest/executor/test_base_worker.py (new): test_short_context_logits_fail_the_request_instead_of_misaligning, plus test_a_refused_request_gets_one_error_and_no_trailing_responses for the single-process and postprocess-worker response handlers.
  • tests/unittest/grpc/openengine/test_servicer.py (new): covers the first-token convention, refusal of an incomplete list, abort after refusal, and the generation_only leg.

Context logits exist only for tokens that pass through the forward
pass. When block reuse matched a prompt prefix, the engine produced
logits for the uncached suffix only, and prompt logprob row t was then
paired with prompt token t + 1 from the start of the prompt: the suffix
scores landed on the leading prompt tokens and the tail was unscored.

Requests that return context logits (including prompt logprobs) now
bypass prefix reuse:
- KV cache manager V2 caps their reuse claim at zero, including
connector prefix reservations and the joint draft pairing.
- KV cache manager V1 drops their reuse estimate before micro-batch
scheduling and rewinds them to position 0 with the admitted chunk.
Their computed blocks are still committed, and requests without
context logits keep reusing the cache.

Context logits shorter than the prompt now fail the request instead of
producing misaligned prompt logprobs. OpenEngine refuses a
PromptOutput with missing scores, ends the stream on an error event,
and does not request prompt logprobs on the generation_only leg, which
never computes prompt logits.

The change keeps requests that need prompt scores from reusing cached prompts, but several paths still allow reuse. These include n>1 child sequences, natively constructed requests, and connector matching when reservations are disabled. On those paths, prompt logprobs can still be incomplete or misaligned. 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Clear context-logit reuse estimates in staged multimodal scheduling.

Both has_separate_stages paths call the capacity scheduler directly and then _schedule_micro_batch, which does not clear estimated_reusable_tokens. A context-logits request can therefore be admitted with a reuse discount, then rewound to position 0 and recomputed for its full prompt. This can undercharge the forward-pass token budget and trigger the total_num_tokens <= max_num_tokens assertion.

Clear the estimates before scheduling the microbatch in _schedule_micro_batch.

Comment thread tensorrt_llm/executor/base_worker.py Resolved
A request refused for incomplete context logits is answered with an
ErrorResponse and aborted, but the engine can still emit in-flight steps
and a final cancellation. The single-process handler called has_error()
on the ErrorResponse, and the postprocess path asserted on the popped
result. Track refused client ids and drop their remaining responses.

Clear the reuse estimate of context-logits requests inside the
micro-batch schedulers, so the multimodal scheduler, which calls them
directly, also budgets the full re-prefill.

Let the OpenEngine servicer's cleanup abort a refused request only while
it is still running.

Assert cache bypass for the partial-prefix request.

The test asserts warm.cached_tokens == 0 for full reuse, but it does not assert the same for partial_warm. This leaves the partial-prefix cache contract unverified. Add assert partial_warm.cached_tokens == 0 before _assert_prompt_logprobs_match(...).

Add a per-request skip_prefix_reuse flag to LlmRequest, set for requests
returning context logits. The V1 block manager neither credits nor
claims a cached prefix for such a request and does not query the KV
connector for one; it allocates the whole prompt and still stores the
blocks for reuse. The V2 manager caps its reuse claim on the same flag.

This replaces the Python rewind after add_sequence_batch and the
scheduler estimate clearing. A skipping request no longer rewrites
blocks other requests share, and sliding-window attention, hybrid
recurrent state and two-model drafting (whose draft manager reads the
same flag) need no special handling.

Block connector matches on the non-reservation path.

When prefix reservations are disabled, _run_kv_connector_hooks() reaches _apply_connector_matched_prefix() for a first-chunk request with skip_prefix_reuse=True. This guard does not reject that request. A positive connector match then advances its context position, so the forward pass cannot produce logits for the skipped prompt tokens. Check skip_prefix_reuse before querying or accepting this connector prefix. Add a non-reservation connector case alongside the existing connector tests in tests/unittest/_torch/executor/kv_cache/test_spec_recompute_tail.py or the connector test module.

Set mSkipPrefixReuse for native context-logit requests.

The native constructors copy returnContextLogits into mReturnContextLogits, but leave mSkipPrefixReuse at its default false. Initialize mSkipPrefixReuse from the corresponding context-logit setting in each native constructor before cache allocation. Otherwise, native requests can reuse cached prefixes and return incomplete prompt scores.

Preserve prefix-reuse policy in child requests.

When create_child_request() wraps a child with LlmRequest(llm_request=child), this assignment uses the default return_context_logits=False. The later copy of py_* attributes restores py_return_context_logits but does not restore skip_prefix_reuse. A child of a context-logit request can therefore claim cached prompt blocks and return incomplete scores. Preserve the parent's flag when wrapping the child, and add a child-request regression case to tests/unittest/_torch/executor/kv_cache/test_skip_prefix_reuse.py.
