Description

This cherry-picks #20233 to release/1.3 for https://nvbugs/6919428. The fix makes DeepSeek-V4 tensor-parallel decode stop issuing two NCCL all-reduces per decoder layer.

Why release/1.3 needs it. release/1.3 is still on the PyTorch 26.08 image (NCCL 2.30.7), so the 18% GB300 DSv4-Pro TEP8 regression seen on main has not landed here yet. It will land with #20146, which backports the 26.09 image and brings NCCL 2.31.2. NCCL 2.31.2 no longer runs small unregistered-input all-reduces on its symmetric kernel and falls back to 1-channel RING/LL instead. Each DSv4 decode message is 57 KB, and across all decoder layers the fallback adds about 2.2 ms per decode step. Main has the full root-cause analysis in #20233.

On release/1.3 the change also removes a redundant collective that exists independently of NCCL:

  • Drop the pre-MoE fused all-reduce. DeepSeek-V4 attention already completes its TP reduction in o_b_proj, because project_sparse_attn_output ignores all_reduce_params. The pre-MoE all-reduce therefore summed a tensor that was already replicated, which scales it by tp_size just ahead of an RMSNorm that cancels the scale.
  • Pass dtype=config.torch_dtype to the DeepseekV4MoE AllReduce. Under AUTO, a multi-node TP group can then use MNNVLAllReduce, as o_b_proj already does.

The model-code change is line-for-line identical to #20233. The unit test differs only where release/1.3's decoder layer differs from main: it builds DeepseekV4Attention and mHC directly instead of through the attention_cls / _make_mhc hooks, so the test patches those names.

Test Coverage

  • New CPU-only unit tests in tests/unittest/_torch/modeling/test_modeling_deepseekv4.py, which is already in l0_b200.yml and l0_dgx_b200.yml:
    • test_deepseek_v4_decoder_reduces_attention_output_exactly_once (TP1 / TP4 / TP4+ADP × eager fusion on/off)
    • test_deepseek_v4_moe_allreduce_is_mnnvl_eligible
The whole file except the GPU test_deepseek_v4_sanity cases (52 tests) passes on the release-1.3 GenPostMergeBuilds 62 wheel with this PR's modeling_deepseekv4.py overlaid.
  • Accuracy: accuracy/test_llm_api_pytorch.py::TestDeepSeekV4Flash::test_tep_mtp_separate_draft_kv_cache (TEP4 + MTP, enable_attention_dp=False, the decoder path this PR changes) passes with and without the fix on the release-1.3 wheel. GSM8K: 94.81 with the fix vs 95.11 without; reference 95.11, pass threshold 91.91. MTP acceptance length: 1.9572 vs 1.9585 (min 1.860). The −0.30 point difference is about 0.35σ of 1319-sample noise, and on main the same A/B moved the other way (+0.23: 95.30 vs 95.07, [https://nvbugs/6919428][fix] Keep DeepSeek-V4 TP decode all-reduces off NCCL #20233).
  • Perf on GB300 oci-jhb, case aggr_upload-gen_only_no_context-gb300_deepseek-v4-pro-fp4_8k1k_con8_ctx1_dep4_gen4_tep8_eplb0_mtp3_ccb-NIXL. Every arm uses the release-1.3 GenPostMergeBuilds 62 wheel (fbb356b, identical to the branch head for every file this PR touches) with its own harness and pinned 26.08 image. Fix arms overlay this PR's modeling_deepseekv4.py into the installed wheel. NCCL 2.31.2 arms preload the NCCL from the 26.09 image, to show what [TRTLLMINF-474][infra] Upgrade NGC PyTorch base image to 26.09 (#19679) #20146 will bring.
Arm (release-1.3 GenPostMergeBuilds 62, 26.08 image) Mean device step time per rep (ms) Median per rep (ms) Output tok/s

+ this PR + NCCL 2.31.2 15.06, 13.97 13.86, 13.96 257.5, 277.0
  • Now: on the current release/1.3 stack the PR is a 6.5% mean / 5.5% median improvement, from removing the redundant collective.
  • After [TRTLLMINF-474][infra] Upgrade NGC PyTorch base image to 26.09 (#19679) #20146: NCCL 2.31.2 alone regresses this case by +15.0% mean / +14.5% median, matching what main saw. With this PR on top, the same stack is 17.0% (mean) / 19.1% (median) faster than that regressed baseline, and still 4.5% / 7.4% faster than release/1.3 is today.
  • Slow-iteration bursts: some reps show bursts of slow iterations (> 20 ms), in both arms and with either NCCL. They inflate the mean but not the median.

Dev Engineer Review

DeepseekV4DecoderLayer disables pre-MoE fusion. This avoids an extra TP all-reduce when attention’s o_b_proj already performs the reduction. DeepseekV4MoE passes config.torch_dtype to AllReduce, so AUTO can select MNNVLAllReduce for eligible multi-node TP groups.

The change removes eager-fusion and attention-DP-based pre-MoE fusion settings. Verify the reduction behavior across supported TP and attention-DP configurations. Performance and accuracy results are author-reported, not independently verified. The reported release/1.3 L0_MergeRequest_PR pipeline failed at build 204. No current review findings were supplied.

QA Engineer Review

The modified unit-test file adds decoder-forward coverage for attention’s reduction request, MoE output reduction, and the absence of other all-reduces across TP1, TP4, and TP4+ADP, with eager fusion on and off. It also tests AUTO’s MNNVL selection when dtype is supplied and its behavior when dtype is absent. The test file is listed in CI test lists for B200 and DGX B200. A DeepSeek-V4 sanity selector is listed for RTX Pro 6000.

The author reports that 60 tests passed on the release/1.3 CI wheel, excluding GPU test_deepseek_v4_sanity cases. The author also reports that the accuracy test passed with and without the change. These results are author-reported; the reported release/1.3 pipeline failed. Coverage verdict: sufficient for the targeted reduction and all-reduce behavior.

Per-File QA Perspective

  • tensorrt_llm/_torch/models/modeling_deepseekv4.py — Verify that attention’s TP reduction replaces the pre-MoE reduction, and that the MoE output all-reduce receives the configured dtype and can select the intended strategy.
  • tests/unittest/_torch/modeling/test_modeling_deepseekv4.py — Tests cover decoder reduction requests across TP and attention-DP configurations, plus MoE all-reduce strategy selection. The file is listed in B200 and DGX B200 CI lists; the RTX Pro 6000 list includes a DeepSeek-V4 sanity selector.

…: Keep DeepSeek-V4 TP decode all-reduces off NCCL

DeepSeek-V4 TP decoder layers issued two NCCL all-reduces per layer
that NCCL 2.31.2 (pulled in by the PyTorch 26.09 base image) no longer
runs on its symmetric kernel for small, unregistered inputs. The 57 KB
decode messages fell back to 1-channel RING/LL, which regressed GB300
DSv4 TEP8 gen_only device step time by ~18% on main.

- Drop the pre-MoE fused all-reduce. The attention output projection
(o_b_proj) already reduces across TP, so this all-reduce only scaled a
replicated tensor by tp_size ahead of an RMSNorm that cancels the
  scale.
- Pass the model dtype to the MoE output AllReduce so AUTO can select
MNNVL AllReduce on multi-node TP, as o_b_proj already does.

The unit test is adapted to release/1.3, whose decoder layer builds
DeepseekV4Attention and mHC directly instead of through the
attention_cls / _make_mhc hooks.

Walkthrough

DeepSeek V4 now passes the configured torch dtype to the MoE all-reduce. Decoder fusion settings no longer depend on the environment variable or attention-DP mode, and pre-MoE fusion is disabled. Tests cover all-reduce configuration and decoder reduction behavior.

Exercise the decoder attention reduction.

The test checks reduce_output configuration and PRE_MOE_FUSION, but it only calls layer.forward_MoE. It does not execute the decoder attention call or observe its all_reduce_params. A regression that disables the runtime attention reduction can therefore pass.

Add a recording attention fixture and run the decoder attention path for tp_size > 1. Assert the expected reduction request.

Coverage summary: the test covers tp1, tp4, and tp4-adp configuration and MoE behavior, but not runtime attention reduction.

Add coverage for the AllReduce AUTO selection path.

This test correctly verifies that DeepseekV4MoE passes torch.bfloat16 and AllReduceStrategy.AUTO. Because it replaces AllReduce with _RecordingAllReduce, it does not verify that AUTO constructs MNNVLAllReduce. Keep this unit-test isolation, but add a backend-level test with controlled MNNVL eligibility that asserts AllReduce.mnnvl_allreduce is selected for a multi-node mapping.

…n reduction and AUTO MNNVL selection

Address review feedback on the DeepSeek-V4 all-reduce fix:

- Run DeepseekV4DecoderLayer.forward with a recording attention stub and
check the runtime reduction request: attention reduces its output
exactly once under TP, and the MoE input is not reduced again.
- Rename the forward_MoE test to what it checks.
- Check at the AllReduce level that AUTO on a multi-node TP mapping
builds MNNVLAllReduce when given a dtype, and does not without one.

Against the unfixed model file the decoder-forward and MoE tests fail
(redundant pre-MoE all-reduce, missing MoE dtype); with the fix all pass.

Thanks @coderabbitai. Both nitpicks were valid and are addressed in 288ee5a (test-only, no change to the model code):

  1. Decoder attention reduction at runtime. A new test, test_deepseek_v4_decoder_forward_requests_attention_reduction, runs DeepseekV4DecoderLayer.forward end to end on CPU, with a pass-through mHC and a recording attention stub. It covers TP1, TP4 and TP4+ADP, with eager fusion on and off. The test checks three things:

    • attention receives exactly one all_reduce_params request, with enable_allreduce == (tp_size > 1 and not attention_dp);
    • the MoE output reduction is still requested under TP;
    • no other all-reduce is issued.

The existing test only exercises forward_MoE, so I renamed it to test_deepseek_v4_forward_moe_does_not_reduce_replicated_input.

  2. AUTO selecting MNNVL. A new test, test_auto_allreduce_selects_mnnvl_only_with_a_dtype, builds a real AllReduce(strategy=AUTO) on an 8-rank, 2-node mapping with MNNVL hardware eligibility forced on and workspace setup stubbed. It asserts that mnnvl_allreduce is an MNNVLAllReduce when a dtype is passed and None when it is not. The missing dtype is exactly the bug the MoE all-reduce fix addresses.

Validation, on the release-1.3 CI wheel in a GB300 container:

  • With this PR's model file: the whole file except the GPU test_deepseek_v4_sanity cases passes (60 tests).
  • Negative control, unpatched release/1.3 model file: 3 of the new and updated tests fail for the intended reasons:
    • the redundant pre-MoE all-reduce gets called;
    • PRE_MOE_FUSION disables the attention reduction (disable_attn_allreduce is True under TP4);
    • the MoE AllReduce gets no dtype.

I also merged release/1.3 ToT into the branch (7b6441c). The branch diff against release/1.3 is still only these two files.

Tip

For best results, initiate chat on the files or code changes.

@chenfeiz0326 Thanks for the detailed update. The reported changes in 288ee5a address both test concerns:

  • The decoder-forward test checks attention reduction requests, continued MoE output reduction, and the absence of extra all-reduces across the TP, ADP, and eager-fusion cases.
  • The real AllReduce(strategy=AUTO) test checks that supplying a dtype enables MNNVL selection on an eligible mapping.

The three expected negative-control failures provide useful regression evidence. Renaming the forward_MoE test also makes its scope clear. I have no further requests on these two points.
