[None][fix] GLM tool and reasoning parsers: streaming matches the whole-text parse - #19935
Conversation
…e reports
glm4 and glm47 parsed a document differently depending on how it was
streamed. A call that arrived in the final delta could be lost on the chat
path, a declared string was re-typed ("99797" arrived as 99797, true as
"True"), a value quoting </arg_value> was cut there, and markup the model
wrote around a tool name ended up inside the name.
- glm47 derives from glm4 and overrides only how a call body splits into
name and argument text. Both parse paths run each complete
<tool_call>...</tool_call> through one function, so streaming reports
the calls and the text detect_and_parse returns, however the output is
split. BaseToolParser.streaming_matches_whole_parse declares that
property; it is False by default and True for these two parsers.
- A call is reported once its </tool_call> arrives, as one item with the
name and the complete JSON arguments; text after a call waits for the
next increment. finish() reports the complete calls the parser still
holds and releases the rest as text.
- A call is delivered only when its argument text is complete key/value
pairs; otherwise its markup is released as text, as detect_and_parse
reads it. A value runs to the first </arg_value> followed by the next
<arg_key> or the end of the call, so a value may quote that tag.
- Declared strings are delivered verbatim. Other declared types are
decoded as JSON, JSON with escaped quotes or a Python literal, and an
undeclared argument only as strict JSON. A result that is not strict
JSON (NaN, 1e309) keeps the text, and a repeated key keeps its first
value.
- A name with a group qualifier missing or extra, or with markup fused
into it, resolves to the declared tool (BaseToolParser.resolve_tool_name)
and is typed by that tool's schema; prose that mentions a tool never
resolves. A <tool_call> restarted inside a call is parsed from the
restart, and the abandoned prefix is released as text.
- GLM-4 keeps the text between and after calls, as GLM-4.7 does, and
argument text is scanned in linear time.
On the chat path a GLM tool call now arrives as one delta when it
completes, instead of its name first and its arguments in pieces.
The GLM tests are one parity class run for both parsers: typing and
argument-text tables, multi-call responses with malformed, restarted and
cut-off calls, and name repair, each checked whole and over every
chunking. The existing streaming tests that asserted an early name
announcement now assert the single complete item.

There was no reasoning parser for the GLM family. GlmReasoningParser, registered as glm, glm45, glm47 and glm_moe_dsa, runs one scanner for streaming and whole text, so the two splits agree: - glm, glm47 and glm_moe_dsa start inside the block, which the GLM-4.7 and GLM-5 templates prefill; with enable_thinking false those templates close it in the prompt, and the parser starts outside. glm45 opens the block at a <think> at the start of the output, as GLM-4.5/4.6 write it. - The block ends at the first </think>, or at a <tool_call> opened before it, so a call made without closing the block reaches the tool parser. A later <think> is text. - A </think> before any content, or directly before the first <tool_call>, closes the block again and is dropped. Text from the first <tool_call> on is kept verbatim, so tool arguments that quote the markup survive. The partial-marker holdback is one module-level helper, shared with the Gemma4 and Kimi K3 parsers, which each had their own copy. The CLI reference lists the new keys. The tests are a table checked whole, at small chunk sizes and over every three-way split, plus a seeded stream-versus-whole comparison and a check that deepseek-r1 is unaffected. time.monotonic() - start < 10measures the whole parity loop on a shared CI host. A slow or busy runner can fail this test even when the parser runs in linear time. A quadratic regression on 40,000 characters would also run far longer than 10 seconds, so a much larger bound still detects it. You can also check linear time a different way: count how often the parser scans the buffer. Instruments such as_close_search_fromprogress do this without timing.Test coverage summary: this PR modifies existing GLM-4 and GLM-4.7 streaming tests and adds
TestGlmStreamingMatchesWholeParse, which is parameterized over both parsers. The new tests cover typing, argument text, verbatim text, multiple calls, names, mangled and prose names, qualified tails, and the separator-run case. The PR also addstest_resolve_tool_nameandtest_parse_base_json_reports_the_name_as_emitted. These are unit tests that CI collects through the existing unittest path. Verdict: sufficient, with one note about flakiness from the timing assertion.🤖 Prompt for AI Agents

Resolves the conflicts with NVIDIA#17067 (K-EXAONE-2), which registers the k-exaone reasoning parser next to this branch's GLM keys: - trtllm_serve_cli.yaml: the --reasoning_parser choices list both the GLM keys and k-exaone, in sorted order. - test_reasoning_parser.py: keep both the random and pathlib imports. /v1/responses streaming re-parses the accumulated text on every chunk, so the warning for a call released as text repeated on every chunk after it. It is now logged once per parser class. The linear-time test streams 40,000 separators instead of 20,000. A parse that rescans the buffer on every increment took 8-13 s on 20,000, under or near the 10 s bound, and takes tens of seconds on 40,000; the linear parse stays well under a second. Approving — the comments below are optional touch-ups, not blockers.
The parity design holds up: I ran the new GLM parity suite, the modified legacy GLM test classes and the GLM/Gemma4/Kimi K3 reasoning tests against this branch, and also probed values quoting <tool_call>, nested <arg_value>, empty names, stray </tool_call> and prose-shaped names; streaming and detect_and_parse agreed in every case. The inline comments are about what the description and docstrings promise versus what the segment parser can see, not about parity.
Whole-PR items:
- Tracking. This is a non-trivial production fix (calls lost, strings retyped, values truncated) found while serving GLM-5.x, with
[None]in the title. Please attach an NVBug or JIRA so the behaviour change is traceable from the release side. - Docs for user-visible changes. Four new
--reasoning_parserkeys (glm,glm45,glm47,glm_moe_dsa) land only in the API-stability YAML.docs/source/deployment-guide/deployment-guide-for-glm-5-on-trtllm.mdcurrently mentions neither--tool_parsernor--reasoning_parser; it should nameglm47for both. The/v1/chat/completionschange (one delta per call instead of name-first-then-argument-pieces) deserves a release-note line, since clients that render arguments as they stream will see different timing. --reasoning_parser auto.MODEL_TYPE_TO_REASONING_PARSERinreasoning_parser.pygets no GLM entry, while the tool-parser factory already mapsglm4_moe,glm4_moe_liteandglm_moe_dsa. Ifglm4_moeis left out because GLM-4.5 and GLM-4.7 share that model_type but differ onreasoning_at_start, say so in the PR;glm_moe_dsalooks unambiguous and could be mapped now.streaming_matches_whole_parsehas no reader in this PR. Fine given the stacked #19883, but a one-line note on the attribute (or in the description) would stop the next reader from hunting for one.

A name with no markup after it was delivered as written even when it could not be a tool: `<tool_call>exec_command(cmd="cat x"</tool_call>` became a call to a function named `exec_command(cmd="cat x"`, which set finish_reason to tool_calls. An undeclared name is now delivered only when it is a dotted identifier; otherwise the call is released as text, as it already was when markup followed the name. Declared names and well-formed hallucinated names such as no_such_tool are delivered as before. The segment docstring now says which <tool_call> restarts a call: one between the name and the argument text. One inside an argument value is part of the value. --reasoning_parser auto maps glm_moe_dsa (GLM-5, GLM-5.2) to its GLM key. glm4_moe is shared by GLM-4.5/4.6 and GLM-4.7, whose templates differ on prefilling <think>, and GLM-5.3-Flash (glm5_next) prefills it whatever enable_thinking says, so neither is resolved automatically. The streaming_matches_whole_parse comment says what a caller may do with it. Signed-off-by: JunyiXu-nv <219237550+JunyiXu-nv@users.noreply.github.com>

NVIDIA#19935, which this branch carried as its first two commits, landed on main squashed and with three later commits. In every file it touches, main's version is taken: this branch made no further change to those files. - tool_parser/base_tool_parser.py, glm4_parser.py, test_tool_parsers.py, test_reasoning_parser.py and trtllm_serve_cli.yaml conflicted; each is main's version. - reasoning_parser.py and glm47_parser.py merged cleanly to main's version. Description
Fixes for the GLM tool parsers (
glm4,glm47) and a reasoning parser for the GLM family, found while serving GLM-5.x to agent clients. Split out of #19883 (Responses API), which is stacked on this PR and reads the newstreaming_matches_whole_parseflag.Tool parsers (
