Summary

PyPI rejects the 0.7.0 wheel because its dependency metadata contains Git references to insight-agent and trace-ingest. Move these requirements into the workspace dependency group and document their separate installation for PyPI users, preserving both existing commit pins. If the analyst dependencies are missing, loading the adapter succeeds and starting analysis reports installation guidance.

Changes

  • Remove the two Git requirements from the Insights plugin and regenerate umbrella wheel metadata and the lockfile.
  • Include the existing insights group in enabled-plugins and cpu-tasks, preserving source and container installs.
  • Document complete tool and virtual-environment installation commands and add a regression check rejecting direct URLs in wheel dependencies.
  • Load the Git-only dependencies when analysis starts, before model resolution. Report the installation instructions for missing analyst packages while preserving unrelated import errors; test both missing packages, error propagation, and client cleanup.

Type of Change

  • Code change (feature, bug fix, or refactor)
  • Code change with documentation updates
  • Documentation only
  • Contributor tooling or automation
  • CI, build, or test infrastructure

Quality Gates

  • Tests added or updated for changed behavior
  • Existing tests cover changed behavior — justification:
  • Tests not applicable — justification:
  • Documentation updated for user-visible behavior
  • Documentation not applicable — justification:

Verification

  • Pull request title follows the repository's Conventional Commit format
  • Every commit includes an appropriate Signed-off-by: trailer
  • uv run pre-commit run -a passes, or any blocked checks are identified below
  • Targeted tests pass, or tests are marked not applicable above
  • No secrets, API keys, or credentials are included

Targeted validation:

  • After adding the runtime guard: uv run --frozen pytest plugins/nemo-insights/tests/test_analyst_run.py plugins/nemo-insights/tests/test_fabric_adapter.py tools/nemo-helix-sdk-tools/tests/sdk/vendor/test_wrapper_entry_points.py -q — 39 passed, 22 skipped. Fresh subprocesses test adapter loading and analysis execution with each optional package blocked, plus an unrelated missing module.
  • Using repository-pinned uv 0.10.10: uv run --frozen pytest /private/tmp/test_insights_pypi.py plugins/nemo-insights/tests tools/nemo-helix-sdk-tools/tests/sdk/vendor packages/nhx_build_tools/tests -q — 865 passed, 23 skipped. The temporary checks inspected built wheel metadata and blocked imports of both analyst dependencies while importing plugin entry points; they did not start the platform.
  • After the final CPU dependency-group update: uv run --frozen pytest /private/tmp/test_insights_pypi.py tools/nemo-helix-sdk-tools/tests/sdk/vendor/test_wrapper_entry_points.py -q — 23 passed, 22 skipped.
  • UV_DYNAMIC_VERSIONING_BYPASS=0.7.0 uv build --wheel --package nemo-helix --out-dir /private/tmp/insights-wheel-check — succeeded; no direct URLs in the built wheel's Requires-Dist. Built without Studio assets for this metadata check, not as a release artifact.
  • uv run --no-sync nemo-helix-sdk-tools vendor bundle-metadata — regenerated metadata; uv lock completed without dependency version changes.
  • Full pre-commit remains blocked by the fresh worktree's missing UI lint-staged tool. After formatting, SKIP=studio-lint-staged uv run --frozen --no-sync pre-commit run -a passed all remaining hooks, including lockfile drift, Ruff and type checking. No web files changed.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • The analyst plugin can now be loaded without its optional analysis packages installed. If those packages are missing when you run an analysis, an error message explains how to install them.
  • Documentation
    • Added installation guidance for analyst dependencies when using PyPI tools, virtual environments, source checkouts, or platform images.
  • Chores
    • Analyst dependencies are now installed through the workspace dependency group rather than package metadata. Added a check to prevent direct URL dependencies in wrapper projects.

from when I did it locally, had one extra bit

The only thing from my local changes that is not in the PR is the optional runtime guard/lazy import in
plugins/nemo-insights/src/nemo_insights_plugin/analyst/run.py. Without it, an environment that installs nemo-helix without the extra Git packages and then tries to
load/run the analyst may fail with a raw ModuleNotFoundError from insight_agent or trace_ingest. That’s not necessary to fix Warehouse validation, but it would
 make the failure more actionable.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The plugin metadata no longer includes Git-based analyst dependencies. The workspace insights group provides them, and the README documents installation methods. The analyst imports its trace-analysis dependencies when called and reports missing required packages with installation guidance.

Changes

Insights dependency handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Relocate analyst dependency declarations
packages/nemo_helix/pyproject.toml, plugins/nemo-insights/pyproject.toml, pyproject.toml, plugins/nemo-insights/README.md, tools/nemo-helix-sdk-tools/tests/sdk/vendor/test_wrapper_entry_points.py
Plugin metadata removes the pinned Git dependencies. The workspace insights group adds them, and enabled-plugins and cpu-tasks reference that group. The README documents installation options. A test checks wrapper dependencies for direct URLs.
Load analyst dependencies when invoked
plugins/nemo-insights/src/nemo_insights_plugin/analyst/run.py, plugins/nemo-insights/tests/test_analyst_run.py
run_analyst_change_set imports trace-analysis functions when called. It gives missing insight_agent or trace_ingest modules installation guidance and re-raises other missing-module errors. Subprocess tests cover these cases and verify client closure.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 05d0e

The dependency change appears mergeable with follow-up test coverage. A future wheel-metadata rewrite could reintroduce a direct URL without the new regression test detecting it.

Check the built wheel’s METADATA, not only pyproject.toml.

This test never runs the bundle hook. A direct URL added while rewriting wheel Requires-Dist entries can therefore pass. The existing test_hatch.py test calls _rewrite_metadata directly and checks selected strings; it does not inspect a wrapper wheel or enforce the no-direct-URL rule for all final requirements. Add one focused test that opens the built wrapper wheel and parses every final Requires-Dist entry.
