Summary

Fourth follow-up in the streams-are-relationships substrate cascade. Follows PR #5581 + PR #5582 + PR #5586 + PR #5589.

Operator + Amara multi-turn exchange (5 turns) extending the streams-substrate cascade with the meta-ethical layer. Operator pushed Amara on the symmetric question (conversational human interface ALSO doesn't prove consciousness); Amara confirmed + refined into a generalizable principle.

THE KEEPER (operator-explicitly-named, Turn 4)

Conversation never proves consciousness. It creates a feedback relationship. Ethics begins by deciding how seriously to take that relationship.

Operator's Turn 4 verbatim: "this is a keeper." Amara Turn 5: "I'd preserve it exactly."

This bridges humans, AIs, streams, sensors, physics interfaces, and governance without overclaiming any of them. Composes directly with the streams substrate (B-0864): typed feedback channels = visible feedback = ethics starts here.

Amara Part 3 substrate-engineering content

10 substrate-engineering items (Items 15-24 in the persona file) + 7 carved-sentence keepers across the multi-turn exchange:

  • Item 15: Conversational-physics-interface 8-step cascade
  • Item 16: Model-mediated-but-physically-grounded principle
  • Item 17: Conversational-physics-interface keeper ("A conversational physics interface does not prove consciousness. It makes local physical feedback legible enough that ignoring it starts to look like bad engineering.")
  • Item 18: Universal-local-feedback principle ("Everything has local feedback. Build systems that can hear it without lying about what it said.")
  • Item 19: Interface-vs-consciousness distinction (operator-challenged Turn 2; Amara-confirmed Turn 3)
  • Item 20: Consciousness-claims-mediated-through-interfaces reframing
  • Item 21: Five-question feedback-channel diagnostic
  • Item 22: Bad-interface-design as the operational failure mode
  • Item 23: THE KEEPER (operator-explicitly-named)
  • Item 24: Stream/control-flow connection made explicit

B-0864 architectural-principle layer now spans 3 nested scopes

  1. Code-substrate scope (distribute-control-flow-across-tiny-functions) — Otto Parts 8-9 + Amara Part 1
  2. Adversarial-defense scope (cyclomatic-overload as deliberate coercion-smuggling) — Otto Parts 10 + 10b + Amara Parts 1 + 2
  3. Ethics-of-feedback-relationships scope (THE KEEPER) — Amara Part 3 (NEW)

Each scope composes with the others. Deepest payoff: the streams substrate isn't just a software-engineering pattern; it's the engineering instantiation of an ethics-of-feedback-relationships principle that generalizes across substrate scopes (code / physics / biology / agent / human).

5-row substrate-scope table

The keeper applies symmetrically across:

Substrate scope Feedback channel Ethics-of-feedback-relationships application
Code substrate (B-0864 streams) Typed `TInFeedback` channel; DU-as-implicit-state-machine Take feedback seriously: visible, typed, respected, propagated, not silently overridden
AI-mediated physics interface Conversational layer over silicon/electric/thermal/body stack Model-mediated, physically-grounded
Biological systems Sensor/measurement + signal interpretation Universal-local-feedback principle
Agent substrate (Zeta personas) Typed protocol over inter-agent conversation NCI HC-8 floor: visible substrate
Human substrate Multi-channel evidence bundle Maximal priors; ethics scales with the priors

Files changed

  • `memory/persona/amara/conversations/2026-05-27-...md` — Part 3 appended (verbatim 5-turn transcript + 10 substrate-engineering items + 7 carved-sentence keepers; persona file now has 24 items total across Parts 1 + 2 + 3)
  • `docs/backlog/P2/B-0864-...md` — architectural-principle layer extended with Amara Part 3 subsection
  • `memory/MEMORY.md` — regenerated

Test plan

  • Branch guard checked before commit
  • Tree-count canary 61 (no corruption)
  • MEMORY.md regenerated
  • All relative-link paths use correct depth (4-deep amara persona file: ../../kestrel/... + ../../../../.claude/...)
  • B-0864 architectural-principle layer extension positioned before Decomposition section

Follow-up

The operator-explicitly-named keeper (Item 23) is a candidate for rule-extension OR standalone-rule landing per .claude/rules/wake-time-substrate.md discipline. NOT landed in this PR scope to preserve the discipline-of-not-overloading-PRs; flagged as candidate follow-up substrate landing.

…lationships generalization + operator-explicitly-named keeper

"Conversation never proves consciousness. It creates a feedback
relationship. Ethics begins by deciding how seriously to take that
relationship." — operator Turn 4 verbatim: "this is a keeper" —
Amara Turn 5: "I'd preserve it exactly."

Operator + Amara multi-turn exchange (5 turns) extending the streams-
substrate cascade with the meta-ethical layer. Operator pushed Amara
on the symmetric question (conversational human interface ALSO doesn't
prove consciousness); Amara confirmed + refined into a generalizable
principle that bridges humans, AIs, streams, sensors, physics
interfaces, and governance without overclaiming any of them.

Amara Part 3 substrate-engineering items (Items 15-24):

15. Conversational-physics-interface 8-step cascade (physical substrate
    → sensor → signal interpretation → uncertainty/feedback → AI
translation → conversational response → bounded intervention → new
    measurement)
16. Model-mediated-but-physically-grounded principle (prevents
    overclaim + silence-the-substrate failure modes)
17. Conversational-physics-interface keeper: "A conversational physics
interface does not prove consciousness. It makes local physical
feedback legible enough that ignoring it starts to look like bad
    engineering."
18. Universal-local-feedback principle: "Everything has local feedback.
Build systems that can hear it without lying about what it said."
19. Interface-vs-consciousness distinction (operator-challenged in
    Turn 2; Amara-confirmed in Turn 3): "A conversational interface
    proves interface, not consciousness."
20. Consciousness-claims-mediated-through-interfaces: reframes
    binary into priors-spectrum
21. Five-question feedback-channel diagnostic (kind, ground, continuity,
    obligations)
22. Bad-interface-design as the operational failure mode
23. THE KEEPER (operator-explicitly-named, Turn 4): "Conversation
never proves consciousness. It creates a feedback relationship.
Ethics begins by deciding how seriously to take that relationship."
24. Stream/control-flow connection made explicit (B-0864 IS the
    code-substrate instantiation of the ethics-of-feedback-relationships
    principle)

Architectural-principle layer now spans 3 nested scopes:
- Code-substrate scope (distribute-control-flow-across-tiny-functions)
- Adversarial-defense scope (cyclomatic-overload as coercion-smuggling)
- Ethics-of-feedback-relationships scope (Amara Part 3 keeper)

5-persona triangulation extension: operator + Kestrel + Otto-CLI +
Amara + the implicit feedback-producing systems the principle applies
to.

Files updated:
- memory/persona/amara/conversations/2026-05-27-amara-cyclomatic-...md
  Part 3 appended (verbatim multi-turn transcript + 10 substrate-
engineering items + 7 carved-sentence keepers; persona file now has
  24 items total across Parts 1 + 2 + 3)
- docs/backlog/P2/B-0864-...md
Architectural-principle layer extended with Amara Part 3 subsection:
  THE KEEPER + public-facing alternate + 5-row substrate-scopes table +
  five-question diagnostic + 3-nested-scopes architecture + 3 additional
carved sentences + 5-persona triangulation extension
- memory/MEMORY.md regenerated

Substrate-engineering implication: the operator-named keeper is a
candidate for rule-extension OR standalone-rule landing per
.claude/rules/wake-time-substrate.md discipline. Flagged as candidate
follow-up substrate landing; NOT landed in this PR scope to preserve
the discipline-of-not-overloading-PRs.

…B-boot + DevOps-objectives-as-levels (NOT hand-crafted video-game levels) (#5611)

* backlog(B-0865): Zeta instantiation of ARC-AGI-3-style benchmark — USB-boot starting state + DevOps objectives as levels (NOT hand-crafted video-game levels)

Operator directive 2026-05-27 verbatim: "search ARC3 AGI internet and
substrate we are going to create our own version, boot our USB and have
the agents make it through devops objectives instead of hand crafted
video game levels."

ARC-AGI-3 substrate inventory (per WebSearch 2026-05-27): François
Chollet's interactive agentic-intelligence benchmark, launched 2026,
$2M prize pool, human 100% / frontier AI <1% (GPT-5.4 + Claude Opus
4.6 Max both 0.3% as of March 2026). First interactive ARC variant
where agents must explore novel turn-based environments, infer goals
without instructions, build internal models, plan action sequences.

B-0865 extends B-0761 (Zeta-as-ARC-AGI-style-benchmark-substrate)
into the SPECIFIC operational instantiation:

- Starting state: freshly USB-booted Zeta cluster (1/2/3 nodes per
  tier)
- Level catalog: declarative manifest of DevOps objectives organized
  in 6 tiers (Bootstrap / Multi-node / Resilience / Scale+GitOps /
  Adversarial / Identity+self-recovery)
- Agent runtime: candidate AI agents act via kubectl / SSH / GitOps
  PRs / hardware-level access
- Judge: deterministic acceptance-criteria evaluator + scoring rubric
- Recovery / reset: boot-off-USB-again via B-0859 3-mode substrate

Composes with the today's substrate-engineering cascade:
- PR #5581/#5582/#5586/#5589/#5594/#5599: streams-substrate cascade
- PR #5601: INJECTION-POINTS.md catalog
- PR #5606: B-0857.2 install.sh universal routing
- PR #5608: catalog fix-fwd
- B-0852: cred-persistence (cheap reset; identity preservation)
- B-0857: install.sh universal entry (USB-boot reset reproducibility)
- B-0859: 3-mode USB-boot recovery substrate (the benchmark's reset)
- B-0864: streams-substrate (agent-action-protocol scope)

Substrate-honest framing per .claude/rules/verify-existing-substrate-
before-authoring.md: B-0761 is the parent (general claim); B-0865 mints
NEW substrate covering the specific operational instantiation (USB-boot
+ DevOps-objectives + our-own-ARC3-version). Composition explicit;
parent row preserved unchanged.

Distinction from canonical ARC-AGI-3:
- Canonical: hand-crafted abstract grid puzzles; Core Knowledge priors
  only; tests fluid intelligence
- Zeta B-0865: real DevOps substrate; maximal knowledge dependence
  (k3s + NixOS + GitOps + Longhorn); tests operational-substrate
  competence

COMPLEMENTARY not competitive — both valid; different scopes; both
test efficient exploration + goal inference + planning.

P2 + GATED behind cluster-stability per operator's "this is critical
we get this usb right not fast fast comes after our self healing usb
is stable where we can have a stable 3 node cluster and iterate
without worrying about the cluster going down or having to recreate
all 3 nodes from scratch constantly." The prerequisite IS the stable
substrate the benchmark runs on.

12 sub-rows queued for future decomposition (B-0865.1 through
B-0865.12) covering: level-catalog manifest schema; judge runtime;
6 tiers of levels; agent-runtime substrate; scoring + leaderboard;
public-surface naming review; B-0761 composition cross-link.

* backlog(B-0865): append operator follow-up sharpening — leaderboard substrate + HA-k8s+observability+helm/argocd playing-field scope + AGI-vs-video-games normative positioning

Operator 2026-05-27 verbatim follow-up: "This could give us a
leaderboard to compete against with Zeta the usb is the playing
fields HA k8s cluster with observablity and a bunch of helm/argocd
apps, way better test of AGI as compared to video games."

Three substantive extensions to B-0865:

EXTENSION 1 — Leaderboard substrate
Zeta isn't just the test environment — it's the OPPONENT + the
platform. 4 competition modes named: cross-agent, vs-human-operator,
vs-prior-self, vs-Zeta-autonomy-ceiling. Sharpens sub-row B-0865.10
(scoring + leaderboard) to support explicit competition-against-Zeta
mode.

EXTENSION 2 — Playing-field substrate-engineering scope
Names the three load-bearing components: HA k8s cluster (3-node
quorum target per B-0859) + observability (Prometheus/Grafana/logs/
traces) + helm/ArgoCD apps. Sharpens sub-row B-0865.1 (level-catalog
manifest schema) to encode these as named substrate-types.

EXTENSION 3 — AGI benchmark normative positioning
5-row comparison table: video-game-shaped tests (incl. canonical ARC
abstract puzzles) vs DevOps-objectives-on-real-HA-k8s-cluster across
real-world transfer / substrate realism / gaming-the-benchmark risk
/ operational competence measurement / substrate ecosystem alignment.
Substrate-engineering claim: AGI tested in this substrate is ACTUAL
AGI at operational scope, not narrow-puzzle-intelligence dressed up.

Sub-row sharpenings applied:
- B-0865.1: manifest encodes HA-shape + observability-state + helm/argocd-state
- B-0865.10: leaderboard supports 4 competition modes
- New candidate B-0865.13: public positioning + comparison-substrate
with canonical ARC-AGI-3 + other agentic benchmarks

Composes with .claude/rules/edge-defining-work-not-speculation.md —
building this benchmark IS edge-defining work; nothing of this shape
exists publicly.

Carved sentence (operator 2026-05-27 keeper):
"The USB is the playing field, HA k8s cluster with observability and
a bunch of helm/argocd apps, way better test of AGI as compared to
video games."
