speculative factory work beats waiting"), the tick does not
wait for instruction. Priority ladder:

0. **Cadence-tracker grep** (tick-open; the human maintainer 2026-05-03
directive). Before picking speculative work, grep the
tick-shard history for cadenced hygiene work that is due:
0. **Tick-start mechanical checks** (the human maintainer 2026-05-03 directive:
*"i'd remember this now if i were you, sounds
importatant to survival"*). Two checks run at every
tick-open before picking speculative work:

**Check 0a — no-op-cadence mechanical check** (existing
tool; per `memory/feedback_recurrence_after_correction_needs_operational_enforcement_otto_2026_05_02.md`):

(The bash sibling `check-no-op-cadence-pattern.sh` works
on environments without bun; both kept in sync.) The
script examines the last 7 tick-shards and warns if (a)
≥5 are minimal-observation OR (b) most recent shard >15
min old. Both conditions catch the "no-op cadence"

the script warns, address the underlying cause before
continuing the priority ladder — typically by writing
a substantive shard OR doing real-work-not-
acknowledgment-only. **This check is critical to
tick-loop survival** — without it, agent drift into
~20-tick-acknowledgment-only patterns goes unnoticed
until the human maintainer surfaces it manually (per

**Check 0b — cadence-tracker grep**: grep the tick-shard
history for cadenced hygiene work that is due:
