Summary

  • replace the runtime ESM JSON import in packages/bot/src/functions/general/commands/version.ts with a filesystem read of packages/bot/package.json
  • keep the existing short COMMIT_SHA fallback when package version data is unavailable
  • add a regression test covering the package.json read failure fallback path

Problem

The current production bot logs show:

Error loading command from version.js:
TypeError [ERR_IMPORT_ATTRIBUTE_MISSING]: Module "file:///app/packages/bot/package.json" needs an import attribute of "type: json"

That means the /version command module fails during startup command loading, so the bot never registers a working version command even though the rest of the bot boots.

Root cause

origin/main currently uses:

import { version } from '../../../../package.json'

At runtime in the Docker bot image, the compiled ESM module tries to import JSON without with { type: 'json' }, which Node rejects.

Fix

Use readFileSync(join(process.cwd(), 'packages/bot/package.json')) to read the version at runtime in a way that works in both:

  • Docker (/app/packages/bot/package.json exists in the image)
  • Jest/ts-jest (mockable through node:fs)

Verification

  • npm run test --workspace=packages/bot -- --ci --testPathPatterns="version.spec"
  • bot package type-check completed cleanly after db:generate + build:shared
  • zero LSP diagnostics in the touched command/spec files
  • CI Quality Gates green

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Improvements

    • Enhanced the version command with improved fallback mechanisms to reliably display version information even when standard sources are unavailable. The command now gracefully handles errors and provides consistent output in all scenarios.
  • Tests

    • Expanded test coverage for version command error handling and edge cases.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The version command's version resolution logic has been refactored to read packages/bot/package.json from the filesystem at runtime instead of using a static import, with a fallback to process.env.COMMIT_SHA (shortened to 7 characters) when reading fails. Tests have been updated to mock the filesystem read and add error path coverage.

Changes

Cohort / File(s) Summary
Version Command Implementation
packages/bot/src/functions/general/commands/version.ts
Replaced static package.json import with runtime filesystem read using readFileSync. Added try/catch error handling with fallback to process.env.COMMIT_SHA (truncated to 7 chars) formatted as commit <sha>, defaulting to 'unknown' if both fail.
Version Command Tests
packages/bot/src/functions/general/commands/version.spec.ts
Updated test setup to mock node:fs readFileSync instead of package.json directly. Added test coverage for error path when readFileSync throws, verifying fallback to COMMIT_SHA. Extended beforeEach to reset mocks and clear environment variables.
