Problem

A bare query like /play Prince plays Prince Royce instead of Prince. Root cause: the Spotify extractor's search endpoint returns Spotify's own raw ranking with no relevance re-scoring, and player.play() always takes tracks[0] from whatever SearchResult it gets. Same gap existed on the YouTube/SoundCloud fallback arms and on the /playtop command's independent resolution path.

Fix

Adds preferExactMatch(query) in resolveProvider.ts: a SearchOptions.afterSearch reranker (discord-player's built-in hook, run on the SearchResult right before tracks[0] is picked) that promotes a candidate whose title or author exactly matches the query. Wired into every resolution arm in resolveQueryWithFallbacks and into executePlayAtTop.

Conservative by design:

  • Only fires on an exact (trimmed, case-insensitive) title/author match — descriptive queries with no exact match are untouched.
  • Skips playlist results and single-track results outright.
  • No new network calls or restructured control flow — same player.play() call shape as before, afterSearch is a native discord-player option.

Test plan

  • npx jest resolveProvider.spec.ts queryUtils.spec.ts — new unit tests for preferExactMatch (author match, title match, no-match no-op, already-first no-op, playlist skip) plus a test that every resolution arm carries the reranker
  • Full bot suite: 3145 passed
  • npm run type:check --workspace=@lucky/bot
  • npx eslint on changed files (no new warnings)

Summary by cubic

Re-ranks music search results toward exact artist/title matches so bare queries like "/play Prince" pick Prince over Prince Royce. Previously we always used the extractor’s tracks[0]; now an afterSearch reranker promotes an exact match before selection.

  • Adds preferExactMatch(query) and passes it via afterSearch on all arms in resolveQueryWithFallbacks (primary, YouTube, SoundCloud) and in executePlayAtTop; no control-flow or network changes.
  • Reorders only non-playlist, multi-track results on an exact (trimmed, case-insensitive) author or title match; otherwise leaves results unchanged.
  • Exposes the reranker and updates tests to await its async afterSearch execution; coverage includes promotion, no-op cases, playlist skip, and propagation across all arms.

Written for commit 4e38c7d. Summary will update on new commits.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Improvements

    • Improved music search result ordering by prioritizing tracks with exact title or artist matches.
    • Applied consistent matching behavior across primary searches and fallback sources.
    • Preserved existing ordering for playlists, single-track results, and searches without exact matches.
  • Tests

    • Added coverage for exact-match prioritization and fallback search behavior.

Spotify's raw search endpoint returns no relevance ranking, so a bare
query like "Prince" could surface a same-genre act (e.g. Prince Royce)
as tracks[0] ahead of the artist actually named. Adds an afterSearch
reranker on every resolution arm (primary + both fallbacks, plus the
play-at-top path) that promotes a track whose title or author exactly
matches the query, leaving descriptive queries untouched.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The play resolution flow now promotes exact normalized title or author matches. The callback applies to primary, YouTube fallback, and SoundCloud fallback searches. Playlists, single-track results, and non-matches keep their existing order.

Worth a look — the grounded gate found no coupling regressions or blocking issues, but 1 advisory finding(s) below merit a look before merge.

Graphify review — findings

Adds a preferExactMatch reranker in resolveProvider.ts that promotes a search result whose title or author exactly matches the query, and wires it in as the afterSearch hook across every play arm in both resolveQueryWithFallbacks and executePlayAtTop. Skips playlists and single/no-match results so descriptive queries stay untouched. Covers the new behavior with preferExactMatch unit tests and an assertion that afterSearch flows through each fallback arm.

Add a single-track no-op test.

preferExactMatch has a separate result.tracks.length <= 1 path. Add a non-playlist, one-track result test that verifies setTracks is not called and the original result is returned.

Graphify review — findings

Adds a preferExactMatch reranker in resolveProvider.ts that promotes a track whose title or author exactly matches the query, and wires it as the afterSearch hook across every play arm in both resolveQueryWithFallbacks and executePlayAtTop. This prevents short/ambiguous queries (e.g. "Prince") from surfacing a same-genre act ahead of the named artist, and leaves playlists, single-track, and descriptive-query results untouched. Includes unit tests covering promotion, no-op cases, and playlist skipping.
