Sources
In Knowledge, Sources are the foundation of information that users interact with, store, read, and access. They come in various formats, such as local files, websites, YouTube videos, and more. This section will provide an overview of the different aspects of Sources, their metadata, and how they can be used effectively within the Knowledge application.
Each Source contains metadata that helps users to understand and manage their information. Metadata includes:
- Description: A brief summary or explanation of the Source's content.
- Events: Dates related to the Source, such as when it was created, accessed, and last updated.
- Icons: Visual identifiers that help users recognize the type or content of the Source.
- Thumbnails: Images that provide a preview of the Source's content.
- Extracted Metadata Tags: Information extracted from HTML and file sources, which can be used to categorize and search for Sources.
- Access Link: A web URL or a path to a local file on the user's computer, allowing direct access to the Source.
Sources can be associated with a list of topics, which serve as a means to categorize and search for relevant information. Topics also play an essential role at the Project level, where they help group similar Sources and extend the project tree in meaningful ways. By breaking down large concepts into smaller, constituent parts, users can efficiently navigate and manage their information.
One of the unique features of the Knowledge application is the ability to chat with Sources. Users can interact with the Source to obtain summaries, discover key topics, and learn more about its contents. This feature enhances the learning experience, allowing users to actively engage with their information and gain insights without having to manually sift through all the content.
Knowledge automatically attempts to extract metadata for all Source types, including icons and thumbnails. For web links, the application extracts the webpage title and relevant tags, such as Open Graph tags and keyword tags, which are then converted into Topics. When using the Knowledge Extension, users can also choose to extract any highlighted or selected text on the active webpage.
Source metadata can be accessed through the Source Details view, and the Source data models can be exported or copied directly to the user's clipboard. Metadata can be exported in either JSON or CSV formats.
When a Source is deleted, the process differs based on the type of underlying resource. For web links, the Source is simply removed from Knowledge. For local files, users have the option to delete the underlying file or move it to a different directory. In both cases, all metadata associated with the Source will be permanently deleted from Knowledge.
In summary, Sources are the building blocks of information in the Knowledge application. By understanding the different aspects of Sources and their metadata, users can effectively store, access, and engage with the content they're interested in. The use of topics and the chat feature provide additional ways to interact with and organize Sources within the Project hierarchy, ultimately streamlining the research and learning process.
