Detail: preserve() only calls retireExperimentalFlags, while the global write path runs normalizeLoadedConfig() first, which also strips the deprecated theme, keybinds, and tui keys. A project-level save therefore leaves those retired keys in kilo.json, whereas a global save removes them, so the project file keeps producing the "tui keys in the main config are deprecated" warning that a global write would have cleaned up. Routing the project write through the same normalization (or documenting why project files intentionally retain retired keys) would keep the two write paths consistent.

Note: this finding was carried forward from the previous review and re-verified at a8b16a88; it is unchanged. An inline comment could not be attached because a stale pending review blocks new review submissions.

  • Config compatibility: Adopted upstream’s forward-compatible handling of unknown config fields while
    preserving Kilo warnings so configuration typos remain visible. Global and project writes retain
    unknown future fields, reject unsupported console writes, clean up retired experimental keys
    consistently, and preserve layered unset behavior.

  • Compaction and retry reliability: Adopted upstream’s conversation-aware compaction, clearer smaller-
    model instructions, complete recent-turn preservation, bounded retries, and jitter. Kilo’s configurable
    tail turns, oversized-payload recovery, chunked compaction, offline reconnect handling, and explicit
    no-retry cases were adapted to the new flow rather than replaced.

  • Provider compatibility: Added reasoning-effort support for Groq, Mistral, xAI, and Merge Gateway;
    corrected DeepSeek V4 Flash sampling; enabled advertised GitHub Copilot PDF support; and fixed Kimi and
    Muse prompt routing. Kilo Gateway transforms, provider-specific behavior, branding headers, and
    kilocode_change markers were preserved.

  • Conflict resolution: Shared runtime conflicts were resolved upstream-first. The upstream compaction,
    retry, provider, prompt-routing, and config architectures were retained, then the still-required Kilo
    hooks were reapplied in their new shapes. Kilo-owned compaction recovery remained isolated under
    kilocode/, while shared-file changes stayed narrow and annotated.

  • Stack and generated state: The upstream release ancestry was preserved through the v1.18.18 merge
    commit. The branch was then merged with the updated v1.18.15 stack base; that reconciliation had only a
    bun.lock conflict. Package transforms were kept Kilo-compatible, Nix hashes were regenerated after
    lockfile changes, and the release changeset and OpenCode version were synchronized.

  • Not relevant to Kilo: Upstream desktop Home/project-picker/macOS lifecycle work, console and stats
    services, deployment changes, and upstream documentation updates are absent from the effective Kilo
    CLI/VS Code change set. The applicable shared UI theme and provider response compatibility changes were
    retained.

The v1.18.18 merge adopted upstream's description that compaction retention is limited only by the preserved token budget, but the Kilo CLI still resolves an unset tail_turns to 2 turns. Restore an accurate description.
