Operating companies

Mars Robertson edited this page Apr 17, 2020 · 3 revisions

We have identified 3 main themes for operating companies.

They are similar, all will benefit from the island and real-estate

These are not actual partnerships, these are inspirations. These are companies that could benefit from using the island, these the companies we will reach out asking for endorsement.

Flow Studies

EF (Entrepreneur First)

Applicants do not need to have an idea for a business or a team in place before applying, but are evaluated solely on the basis of their ambition and talent.

It helps if you understand Entrepreneur First vision - getting super smart PhD in Machine Learning, AI, astrophysics and teaching them everything about startups, running a business, allowing these guys to mingle.

It’s pre-idea stage. Idea will come later, you’ll have plenty of chances to bounce all sort of ideas.

The trouble with London (and any other major city) is that there is a shortage of housing. If I was to relocate to a new city, it would definitely took some effort to find a suitable accomodation.

Bureaucracy, paperwork, health & safety is pretty huge in the UK, to rent a place they usually want to do a reference check, guarantor, payslips (proof of work) and it can get rather complicated. If the goal of the programme is to mingle with others, create a dedicated coworking coliving space.

We are doing something from scratch, the whole thing is designed for flow and human performance optimization.

Company on-site retreat

With the rise of remote working, many companies do on-site face to face gatherings.

I like this B2B segment.

All in the flow :) Just a more efficient, more targetted sales.

Backup (low season)

  • Writer's retreat (in Winter, you stay indoor and focus on the task)
  • Kids, scouts, giving back to the community

Obviously the scouts' rule applies: leave the island better than you found it!

Sales

Startup = Growth (an essay by Paul Graham). Business = Sales.

The question to the Estonian regulator:

  1. Selling services in the future? Can someone buy $1k worth of services that will be delivered in the future?

It would be amazing if a fast-growing remote-only company could buy $50k worth of retreat to be used in 2 years from now.

It would be amazing if they become a shareholder of the island at the same time. The trouble with the prepayment is trust and opportunity cost of money.
