This five-hour workshop is a revised version of the metadata analysis workshop offered as a post conference workshop at last year’s DLF Forum. This workshop will introduce participants to the Metadata Assessment Framework developed by the DLF Assessment Interest Group, Metadata Working Group and teach participants how to use this Framework as a guide for analyzing their own metadata. We will also discuss application profiles and metadata crosswalking and transformation. Participants will also learn how to use open source tools to analyze and remediate metadata. Topics covered include metadata application profiles, OpenRefine, tools for extracting and qc'ing embedded metadata from digital objects, as well as time for participants to discuss their own metadata assessment and remediation plans in breakout sessions

To keep this workshop a safe and inclusive space, we ask that you review and follow the the Recurse Center Social Rules (aka Hacker School Rules).
We request that all participants bring their own laptop, preferably one you have installation or admin privileges on, to the workshop. The laptop should have the software listed below installed as well as an up-to-date modern web browser (basically, not Internet Explorer). If you have any issues with the requested set-up, please contact us ASAP using the communication methods detailed above.
OpenRefine is a graphical-interface tool for cleaning, transforming, and enriching imported metadata. OpenRefine is strongly recommended, as it will be discussed and utilized in-depth as section five of the workshop.
OpenRefine is available for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux. Please note that laptops/devices running mobile operating systems and web app platforms (Chrome OS, Android, iOS) are NOT supported by OpenRefine. OpenRefine requires a working Java runtime environment, otherwise the program will not start.
The latest stable release of OpenRefine is version 3.0. We recommend you install either v2.8 or 3.0 prior to arriving at the workshop; however, please beware that v3.0 is just over 2 weeks old, and OpenRefine's maintainers are still addressing bugs in the software. All versions can be downloaded here.

Upon launch, OpenRefine will run as a local server, opening your computer's browser. As long as OpenRefine is running, you can point your browser at http://127.0.0.1:3333/ to use it, even in several browser tabs/windows.
