Investigate behavioral differences between threaded and unthreaded runs #850

In this build, from #836 (the commit before the threaded was removed), the unthreaded step! ran while the threaded hit a saturation adjustment error. Both jobs used the same exact flags, so the expected behavior should be the same. This should be investigated.

This is pretty old, and I think CI has been pretty reproducible.
