What does this PR do?

Qwen2.5-VL's text-only dummy vision forward hard-coded the input patch width and grid for the standard 3-channel, temporal-2, patch-14, merge-2 configuration. A valid vision configuration with different geometry can therefore fail in patch embedding or use a grid inconsistent with the model.

Derive the dummy input width, local patch count, global SP grid, and metadata from the model's vision configuration. The standard configuration retains its previous shapes. The production change is limited to the dummy path; regular image/video forward and attention kernels are unchanged. Regenerate the modeling and diff artifacts from the patchgen source.

Validation and limits

Exact head: e0923d1486ff758f005a3ea2731fe09d50b28883.

  • tests/models/transformers/qwen/test_qwen2_5_vl.py: 11/11 CPU/Gloo tests passed. These comprise four non-default dummy geometries, two regular tower-level forward/backward cases (eager and veomni_sdpa, explicit pixels/grid, SP=1), two real two-process CPU/Gloo Ulysses=2 dummy cases, and the existing text/image/video HF parity cases.
  • This file owns Qwen2.5 regular vision forward, non-default dummy geometry, and CPU/Gloo SP execution. The merged tests/distributed/test_dummy_forward.py owns standard dummy geometry/probe assertions and accelerator rejection; duplicate standard coverage was removed here.
  • All trainable vision parameters have finite gradients. Both dummy and regular cases backpropagate a nonzero square objective; each dummy case also checks at least one nonzero parameter gradient per rank. Regular cases additionally check finite, nonzero input gradients and at least one nonzero parameter gradient. These smoke checks do not establish SP gradient parity.
  • make quality and whitespace checks pass on this head. A dry merge with main 089e3605ddd4d9968b3488ab0aae0f842a4321d3 passed on the preceding head. Production patchgen/generated artifacts are unchanged by the review-only test consolidation; their prior Transformers 5.16.1 patchgen check remains scoped to that unchanged production implementation.
  • NPU execution and asymmetric multi-DP FSDP training were not run. The pre-existing dummy cache still assumes the model's device and SP topology remain fixed during its lifetime.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Qwen2.5-VL dummy vision inputs now reflect configured patch, channel, merge, and sequence-parallel settings, improving compatibility across model configurations.
  • Tests
    • Added coverage for vision forward and backward passes across varied input geometries and attention options. Checks verify finite outputs and gradients, confirm parameter gradients are present and include nonzero values, and exercise two-rank CPU execution with sequence parallelism.

Test consolidation: one owner per vision contract

Test-only / maintainability review. The coverage added here overlaps with #1331, which adds a shared VLM vision suite in tests/distributed/test_dummy_forward.py. Concretely:

  1. test_qwen2_5_vl_dummy_forward_uses_vision_geometry[3-2-14-2] is the standard configuration. #1331 already runs exactly that case (real vision model, eager, SP=1, dummy_forward + backward) inside _check_dummy_vision_inputs. Since this PR exists to cover non-default geometry, the (3, 2, 14, 2) case adds no new axis. Please drop it here (or move the standard-geometry execution entirely to #1331 and keep only the non-default cases here).

  2. test_qwen2_5_vl_dummy_forward_builds_local_patches_and_global_grid re-implements the probe + get_parallel_state monkeypatch + local-row/global-grid/cu_seqlens assertions that #1331's _check_dummy_vision_inputs already performs for Qwen2.5-VL (SP=1/2/8/16/32, merge 2). Two parallel implementations of the same contract will drift. Keep one implementation: either delete this test here, or have #1331 drop its Qwen2.5 probe loop and adopt this parametrization.

  3. The "SP without FlashAttention" contract is currently spread over three mechanisms: Qwen4 2-card torchrun rejection (#1331), Qwen3 with a monkeypatched SP state that only runs SP=1 (#1331), and this PR's real 2-process Gloo Ulysses=2 case for Qwen2.5. The 2-process Gloo form is the cheapest and the only one that exercises real collectives, so please make it the shared pattern: either move it into #1331's shared vision suite, or state explicitly that this file owns CPU/Gloo SP coverage while #1331 owns accelerator rejection.

Counterpart needed on #1331: add qwen2_5_vl to test_vlm_vision_forward_contract's family list (SP=1, eager/sdpa) so the regular-forward matrix is actually cross-family rather than Qwen3/Qwen4 only.

What should stay here: the four non-default geometry cases and the 2-process Gloo SP test. This is not a correctness blocker for the dummy-geometry fix; it is about keeping a single implementation per contract.

Scope update after #1331 merged

#1331 landed as 089e3605ddd4d9968b3488ab0aae0f842a4321d3 (all checks green) without adding qwen2_5_vl to test_vlm_vision_forward_contract. Withdrawing item 4 of my previous review: #1331 is not going to change, so this PR takes ownership of Qwen2.5-VL instead.

Revised asks:

  1. Add the missing regular-forward coverage here. [model] test: preserve Qwen4-Exp dummy vision attention contract #1331's merged matrix covers Qwen3/Qwen4 only. Please add one Qwen2.5-VL regular vision forward case with explicit pixels/grid_thw (eager and veomni_sdpa, SP=1, forward + backward). This is the piece that has no owner after [model] test: preserve Qwen4-Exp dummy vision attention contract #1331.
  2. Keep the 2-process Gloo Ulysses=2 dummy-SP case, and state in the test docstring (and PR body) that this file owns Qwen2.5 CPU/Gloo SP while the merged tests/distributed/test_dummy_forward.py owns accelerator rejection. The 2-process form stays the shared pattern.
  3. De-duplicate against merged [model] test: preserve Qwen4-Exp dummy vision attention contract #1331. It now covers the standard (3, 2, 14, 2) dummy forward + backward and the SP=1/2/8/16/32, merge=2 probe assertions. So drop the (3, 2, 14, 2) case here, and keep test_qwen2_5_vl_dummy_forward_builds_local_patches_and_global_grid only for axes [model] test: preserve Qwen4-Exp dummy vision attention contract #1331 does not cover (merge 1/4, patch 8, channels 1). If no unique axis remains after that, delete the probe test.

Net result: #1383 = production dummy-geometry fix + non-default geometry + Qwen2.5 regular forward + CPU/Gloo SP, with one implementation per contract.

Follow-up on 3eb07275: dedup is done, two items remain

Thanks — the consolidation part is addressed:

  • Ownership split is documented in the test docstring.
  • The duplicate (3, 2, 14, 2) case is gone, and test_qwen2_5_vl_dummy_forward_builds_local_patches_and_global_grid is deleted. There is now one implementation per contract: standard geometry + probe assertions in the merged tests/distributed/test_dummy_forward.py, non-default axes and CPU/Gloo SP here.

Still missing from the scope update:

  1. Qwen2.5-VL regular vision forward. The file currently has the full-model eager parity test and the SP=2 veomni_sdpa case, but no tower-level forward with explicit inputs at SP=1. Please add one case: Qwen2_5_VisionTransformerPretrainedModel with explicit pixels/grid_thw, both eager and veomni_sdpa, SP=1, forward + backward. This is the only Qwen2.5 forward-contract gap left after [model] test: preserve Qwen4-Exp dummy vision attention contract #1331 merged; the SP=1 veomni_sdpa row has no owner today.
  2. PR body. It still says "five geometries" and Exact head: a2851b15a. Please update it to four geometries, the new head 3eb07275, and the ownership sentence that now lives in the test docstring.

Also note the device workflows went back to action_required after the push (Check Patchgen Drift, GPU/NPU unit and e2e are not running). Once the two items above land I will re-approve the workflows, and approve the PR when the checks are green.

@Coach257 @FoolPlayer Applied the requested test consolidation in 3eb0727503e151f561537ebd5ec765534ca8eff5, with counterpart #1331 at fb742928deb9a9675e94f5883d31ea33ce597193.

Removed the standard (3,2,14,2) duplicate and the parallel Probe/get_parallel_state/local-grid implementation. This file retains exactly the four non-default geometry cases, the two real CPU/Gloo SP cases, and its existing HF parity tests. The module explicitly owns non-default geometry + CPU/Gloo SP execution; #1331 owns standard geometry and accelerator rejection. The shared suite now covers Qwen2.5 regular SP1 eager/SDPA forward/backward using its production window-metadata helper.

This PR passes 9/9 CPU/Gloo cases; the companion shared suite passes 19/19 CPU cases on its effective main composition. Pinned make quality, diff checks and independent review pass. Production geometry code is unchanged by this test cleanup; no native accelerator execution is claimed. Please re-review when convenient.

@Coach257 Addressed the revised scope in 892004744c42310fc0d4849140b94170dc6285c4:

  • Added the two Qwen2.5 tower-level SP=1 regular-forward cases, with explicit pixels / grid_thw, eager and veomni_sdpa, real backward, and finite input/parameter gradients.
  • Kept four non-default dummy geometries and both real two-process CPU/Gloo SP cases. The standard dummy/probe coverage remains owned by the merged [model] test: preserve Qwen4-Exp dummy vision attention contract #1331; no second shared-suite implementation was added.
  • Updated the PR body with the current head, four geometries, ownership statement, and exact validation scope.

The complete file passes 11/11 CPU/Gloo cases; quality and whitespace checks pass. A dry merge with main 089e3605ddd4d9968b3488ab0aae0f842a4321d3 is clean. This does not claim native NPU execution. Please approve the workflows for this head and re-review when the checks complete.

Use a non-zero backward loss in both checks.

output.float().mean() * 0.0 supplies a zero upstream gradient. The checked parameter gradients can therefore be all-zero tensors, which satisfy both grad is not None and torch.isfinite. A backward regression that fails only with a non-zero upstream gradient can pass these tests.

Suggested fix
-        (output.float().mean() * 0.0).backward()
+        output.float().mean().backward()

Apply the same change to the distributed check at lines 151-157.

@Coach257 @FoolPlayer Addressed the non-zero backward review in a3d84cd3d: both the non-default geometry and the two-rank Gloo dummy paths now backpropagate a nonzero square loss, check all trainable gradients are finite, and require at least one nonzero gradient per rank. The full file passes 11/11 CPU/Gloo tests; make quality and an independent review pass. These are smoke checks, not SP gradient-parity or native NPU claims. Please re-review and approve the workflows for the new head when convenient.

Reject a zero backward signal in the regular tests.

output.float().square().mean() has zero derivative when pooler_output is zero. The current finite-only assertions would accept that result, so these tests do not prove nonzero backward propagation through the explicit-input path.
