What does this PR do?

Add training-time validation for text SFT without carrying forward the unsafe cross-trainer semantics from closed PR #1077.

The initial scope is intentionally narrow: single-source, map-style conversation or classification data with the native dataloader under pure DP/FSDP2. Unsupported trainer, modality, data, parallel, and observability modes fail closed.

Checklist Before Starting

Test

Passed on Python 3.12.13 / PyTorch 2.11.0:

  • PYTHONPATH=. python -m pytest -q tests/data/test_validation_sampler.py tests/trainer/test_training_validation.py — 46 passed, including a real two-rank Gloo reduction with uneven local batch sizes and causal-target counting regressions for valid first labels and one-token sequences.
  • PYTHONPATH=. python -m pytest -q tests/data/test_dataloader.py — 22 passed.
  • PYTHONPATH=. python -m pytest -q tests/data/test_collators.py tests/data/test_classification_data_processor.py — 15 passed.
  • make quality and git diff --check passed.

Two-GPU FSDP2 functional smoke passed on the exact current PR head 5ebf719d7e9c8e97f5bc0abdadc81cc3c72b27e6 against main@cf5dd272d616fc2ae14025225dc036948e6440ae:

  • 2× NVIDIA A800 80GB, one node, two-rank NCCL, pure DP with FSDP2 shard degree 2; all other parallel dimensions were 1.
  • A randomly initialized two-layer Qwen2 toy model ran three BF16 AdamW optimizer updates over deterministic synthetic map-style data (6 train / 4 validation samples, sequence length 128, seed 1083).
  • Training losses were 12.279469, 12.272757, and 12.123192; gradient norms were 10.614016, 10.838994, and 11.004934.
  • The two-rank NCCL preflight returned the expected all-reduce sum 3.0.
  • Validation ran exactly at global steps 2 and 3 with losses 12.261265 and 12.258946; each pass aggregated exactly 508 shifted causal targets, restored all module modes, and returned the model to training mode.
  • Slurm job 310084 completed with exit code 0. The runtime was Python 3.12.3, PyTorch 2.10.0+cu129, CUDA 12.9, and Transformers 5.9.0.
  • This validates accelerator batch transfer, FSDP2 forward execution, NCCL collectives, weighted distributed validation reduction, callback scheduling, and module-mode restoration on the current PR head.

API and Usage Example

data:
  eval_path: /path/to/validation.jsonl
  datasets_type: mapping
train:
  eval_steps: 100
  eval_epochs: 0

eval_path: null disables training-time validation. See docs/usage/trainer.md for the complete support and rejection matrix.

Design & Code Changes

  • Let TextTrainer own a dedicated validation runner while the callback only schedules it; other composed trainers reject validation until they provide task-specific contracts.
  • Add an O(1) exact distributed batch sampler that visits every record once, preserves source order, keeps equal non-empty forward counts across ranks, and rejects impossible partitions instead of padding or duplicating data.
  • Aggregate causal loss by shifted non-ignored tokens and classification loss by non-ignored sample labels over the captured DP group.
  • Restore every module's prior train/eval mode on success or failure, isolate dataloader RNG, and disable persistent validation workers.
  • Reject plaintext chunk expansion, weighted multisource YAML, iterable data, non-text trainers, SP/TP/PP/EP, async SP, compile, profiler, and MoE router monitoring until their contracts are implemented.
  • Add property, fault-injection, real collator/dataloader, cross-trainer rejection, and two-process collective tests; document the public configuration boundary.

Checklist Before Submitting

  • Read the Contribute Guide.
  • Applied scoped pre-commit checks; the unrelated repository-wide formatting baseline is documented above.
  • Added/updated documentation.
  • Added CPU tests for sampler, runner, callback, collator/dataloader integration, and distributed aggregation; completed the two-GPU FSDP2 functional smoke documented above.

Adds TextValidationRunner with configuration checks, deterministic evaluation loading, weighted loss calculation, module and RNG restoration, distributed reduction, and rejection tests.
Trainer and callback integration
veomni/trainer/text_trainer.py, veomni/trainer/base.py, veomni/trainer/callbacks/evaluate_callback.py, tests/trainer/test_training_validation.py
Constructs validation for TextTrainer, validates scheduled evaluation configuration, executes callbacks without duplicate steps, stores metrics, and logs rank-zero results.
Configuration documentation
veomni/arguments/arguments_types.py, docs/usage/arguments.md, docs/usage/trainer.md
Clarifies eval_path behavior and documents training-time validation configuration, batching, ordering, supported scope, and rejection cases.

Estimated code review effort: 4 (Complex) | ~45 minutes

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 5ebf7

The PR adds scheduled distributed text validation, but validation metrics may use a different token denominator than training and the scheduling condition is duplicated, risking misleading loss comparisons or evaluations running at unintended steps. The change is not merge-ready without explicit owner confirmation or follow-up on these bounded correctness and integration risks.

last_validation_metrics is a new public trainer attribute; declare and document it.

_evaluate writes self.trainer.last_validation_metrics. BaseTrainer does not declare this attribute in its class-level attribute block, and docs/usage/trainer.md does not mention it. Any consumer that reads it before the first validation pass hits AttributeError. Declare last_validation_metrics: Optional[Dict[str, float]] = None on BaseTrainer, and add one line to the validation section of docs/usage/trainer.md.

A rank-local validation failure will hang the job instead of crashing it.

runner.run() contains dist.all_reduce over the DP group. If the validation forward raises on one rank only, for example an out-of-memory error at a longer evaluation sequence, that rank propagates the exception while the other ranks block in all_reduce until the collective timeout. The training forward has the same property, so this is not a regression. It is still worth deciding whether a validation pass should be able to stall a long training job.

Consider one of these operational measures: reduce a per-rank success flag before the loss reduction, or catch the exception, log it, and skip the validation pass.

638-650: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

The "validation requested" predicate is duplicated, and the guard fires late.

Two points on this guard:

  1. The predicate args.data.eval_path is not None and bool(args.train.eval_steps or args.train.eval_epochs) is an exact copy of TextValidationRunner.is_requested in veomni/trainer/validation.py Lines 78-80. Two copies of one configuration contract drift apart. Import TextValidationRunner.is_requested here, or move the predicate into a shared helper that both call.
  2. _init_callbacks runs last in BaseTrainer.__init__ and in TextTrainer.__init__. A VLMTrainer job with data.eval_path set therefore builds the model, loads weights, and builds the optimizer before it raises. Moving this check into _setup would reject the configuration in seconds instead of after a full weight load.
♻️ Proposed consolidation of the predicate
     def _validate_validation_configuration(self) -> None:
- args = self.args
- requested = args.data.eval_path is not None and bool(args.train.eval_steps or args.train.eval_epochs)
- if requested and getattr(self, "validation_runner", None) is None:
+ from .validation import TextValidationRunner
+
+ if TextValidationRunner.is_requested(self) and getattr(self, "validation_runner", None) is None:
             raise ValueError(

Calling this from _setup instead of _init_callbacks gives the faster failure.

The BaseTrainer rejection test bypasses _init_callbacks, so the wiring is untested.

The test calls _validate_validation_configuration directly. It proves the guard logic. It does not prove that _init_callbacks invokes the guard before any callback is constructed. A later refactor could move or drop the call site without failing this test. Consider asserting the call from _init_callbacks with a spy.

116-160: 🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🔵 Trivial | ⚖️ Poor tradeoff

Make validation’s memory footprint explicit and consider lazy construction. The validation dataset remains resident for the full job, each pass creates a second worker pool, and validation runs a full forward at train.micro_batch_size. Consider building the dataset and dataloader on the first validation pass while retaining fail-fast configuration checks, and document the additional dataset, worker, and forward memory cost for jobs sized near their memory limit.

@coderabbitai I validated the current PR head 5ebf719d7e9c8e97f5bc0abdadc81cc3c72b27e6 against the accelerator-backed FSDP2 review request.

  • The automated two-rank Gloo test covers uneven exact-batch distribution and weighted reduction.
  • Slurm job 310084 ran on 2× NVIDIA A800 80GB with NCCL and pure DP/FSDP2 shard degree 2.
  • The exact-head run completed three finite BF16 optimizer updates and the NCCL preflight returned the expected all-reduce sum 3.0.
  • Validation ran at global steps 2 and 3 with losses 12.261265 and 12.258946, aggregating 508 shifted causal targets per pass.
  • All module modes were restored after each validation pass and the model returned to training mode.

The PR body is updated with the exact-head configuration and results. Together, the automated distributed test and exact-head accelerator smoke cover uneven exact batching, accelerator transfer, FSDP2 forward execution, NCCL collectives, distributed reduction, scheduling, and state restoration.

@WenzheWang Thanks for the exact-head validation results. The automated Gloo test and the 2×A800 NCCL/FSDP2 smoke cover the requested distributed execution paths. The finite updates, expected all-reduce result, weighted validation loss, and mode restoration provide the required evidence.

Learning: In `veomni/trainer/validation.py`, `TextValidationRunner._count_loss_units` must count causal-LM loss targets from `labels[..., 1:]`, because `logits[..., :-1]` predicts `labels[..., 1:]`. The first label and every one-token causal sample have no preceding prediction logit and must not contribute to the validation-loss denominator. `veomni.utils.loss_utils.count_loss_token` is training bookkeeping and is not the correct denominator for model-reported causal validation loss.
