Some nasty bugs are caused by our use of mutable configuration objects (#504). We should consider making heavy use of the equatable package and only using immutable data structures

as we depend more heavily on gql libs this is happening implicitly like in #648. Closing this as it is essentially now a design goal tapered by pragmatism
