suggestion: a square grid layout alternative

I know this totally goes against the idea that this is like the Terpstra or Lumatone or other hex layouts, but there are various rectangular layouts of controllers and such, and it would be valuable for people exploring controller options to be able to directly compare hex and rectangular. So, if there were a setting just switch to rectangular and see that for comparison, that would be super.

I suspect this will take some serious work and probably have to be done in a fork, but I wanted to post this here so people might see it and think about it.
