As for which color specifically to use, two possibilities are:

Use Google's metrics and make it the color it would be were a 20% opacity #000000 overlay be placed above Base2

Make the status bar Base2, and blend the app bar in with the tabs and article list, similarly to the high contrast dark theme. (Is the app bar's shadow actually not present in said theme, or is it just not visible due to the #000000 color?)
