While the current document file format is quite sufficient for plain text files, there are a bunch of feature requests that would be a lot easier to implement if the documents were stored in say JSON files. Especially footnotes (#342) and user highlights for text review etc (#705).
This may be more suitable for a novelWriter 2.0 (#798) with potential support for rich text, where the JSON format may also be handy. If the documents are saved as JSON, it makes sense to also convert the main project file to JSON.
