Right now it defaults to the value of the first drop-down. If the customer is using year/make/model, it looks for "year" if no setting is specified.

It may make more sense to have it work like this:

Is there a level called "make"? If yes, that will be the default
If there is no level called "make", the first level becomes the default

This will prevent users who choose year/make/model from getting confused when they get a broken image.
