implement single version intermediate files

We slacked about this briefly -- at some point, please reconfigure the code so instead of including a date in the file name and thus having multiple versions of the same file, we use an overwriting approach instead combined with boolean toggles (to re-run/overwrite or not). (unless you think there is a good reason to implement a new-file-in-time approach)
