It seems that the plugin itself shouldnt require ssl functionality for the core functionality.
If i understood correctly it is the 'server' stuff that requires ssl.

Can that server stuff be feature gated so base build does not require it?

I think that is possible, but it may be a while before I can find the time to implement it.
