This is a grammar for The Meson Build System for Tree-sitter.
There is another Tree-sitter grammar for Meson already in existence. You might ask then, why did we undertake to make a new one?
- Several bugs were found in that existing grammar
- That grammar has significant departures from the official grammar
- We believed that a fresh start working from the official grammar would give better results more quickly.
We put this grammar together in about 2 hours, working solely from the the official Meson documentation and the grammar. We think the results are more satisfactory and provide a better base to build on for our needs.
This grammar is based on the official Meson grammar which we
presume to be accurate. (We did find at least two errors in the grammar:
there is a reference to an assignment_expression
but no rule for that
exists, and there is no grammar for format strings (which we call "fstrings").
The following bugs were found in the documented grammar which we have fixed here:
-
The
assignment_expression
is referenced but not defined. -
No grammar rule for format strings (we assume format like f'content' or f'''content'''.
-
Jump statements (
break
andcontinue
) can appear inside if branches (when the if statement itself is nested within aforeach
.) We refine this a bit to limit their appearance to the last statement of a given branch (as nothing after them would be executed anyway.) -
Binary literals are documented as supported but missing from the grammar. (Which begs the question, what is the purpose of supporting binary literals?)
-
Literal binary, octal, and hex integers can use a capital letter to indicate the case (for example 0X1234). This is not reflected in the docs, but it is the actual implementation.
That whole grammar is repeated below:
