Using subscriptions while running on Node.js

So, the nextjs example has this

  transport:
    typeof window === "undefined"
      ? // WebsocketTransport can not be used Server Side, so we provide FetchTransport instead.
        // If you do not plan on using Subscriptions you can use FetchTransport on Client Side as well.

Why is that? Does this mean that it's impossible to subscribe to something if I'm running on Node?
