When you check-out a parent asset that has child assets records (children checked-out to parent) to a location, the location of the child records update to reflect that checked-out location. But when you check that parent asset back in, while the location of the parent asset goes back to its default location, the location of the child assets don't update and remain the old checked-out location.
I see that you don't encourage checking-out assets to other assets or locations, but to describe our situation, we have general use items, some of which we bundle for use at locations that rotate (ex. we have "huddle carts" as an asset that contains multiple devices). Knowing which building contains the items is our main goal.
The main reason I'm classifying it as a bug is because the initial check-out updates child locations, so it seemed like a miss on the check-in process, but if it's by design, then I would ask for this feature.
Reproduction steps
Assign an asset to another asset. Make sure both assets have default locations.
Check-out the parent asset to a location. Notice that the child assets will then show the checked-out location as well.
Check-in the parent asset. Notice that the parent asset updates to its default asset location, but the child assets still show the prior check-out location.
Expected behavior
Child assets go back to their default location. Or if upon check-in of the parent item the user picks a different location than the default, then update child assets with that location as well.
