Using a supported version?

  • I have searched searched open and closed issues for duplicates.
  • I am using Signal-Desktop as provided by the Signal team, not a 3rd-party package.

Overall summary

I updated to 7.11.0 today, also changed phones so i had to relink my laptop. I added someone to a group via mobile number and now I get the recurring pop up "Verify to continue messaging", I do the verification online (different browsers) and it says verification failed. Have tried 10+ times.

Steps to reproduce

As above.

Expected result

Verify the capture!

Actual result

Fails, continuous loop

Hey there - I'm sorry this is happening to you. Would you consider installing the beta? It has some fixes for these repeated captchas: https://support.signal.org/hc/en-us/articles/360007318471-Signal-Beta

Hi Scott, sure, beta installed and seems to be working fine.

As a side note on version 7.11.0, despite not being able to complete the verification, the chat's are still syncing.

I've just gotten this issue when upgrading to 7.12.0. It's quite annyoing. The verification keeps failing and the recaptcha keeps popping up. Please for the sake of all our sanity ... roll back that commit.

The same issue in 7.12.0. I never have so many problems with Signal like last years (months) when they update every week. It's a pity that there is no any stable alternative which has privacy under concern. I don't believe that Signal is going in right way ....

This cropped up this morning for me with v7.12.0 which then persisted with the upgrade to v7.13.0

@Ingablu @Caligatio If you could provide a debug log right after this behaior happens to you, that would really help us track things down. Ideally, we could a debug log from all of your devices (your primary and all of your linked devices - iPad and Desktop). Thanks!

@scottnonnenberg-signal I didn't use Signal Desktop last week as I was traveling and I haven't had the problem since I returned a few days ago. I don't know if it's because my client upgraded to v7.14.0 or if something else changed.

If it happens again, I'll try to grab a debug log.

@scottnonnenberg-signal also running into this issue, signal desktop 7.13.0 on linux (nixos).

In my case, it was triggered by attempting to add a new contact by phone number whose account was apparently deleted. I had them add me instead, which worked, but ever since I've gotten the captcha request when I open the desktop app. Interestingly, I can still both send and receive message on both desktop and mobile.

My browser is firefox and I'm on linux, so I don't think I'm running into the length limitations mentioned in #6474 (comment) and #6455 (comment). I've disabled my VPN. Sticker pack links work fine. I tried the workaround in #5821 (comment) (providing the captcha url through the command-line, signal-desktop "signalcaptcha://signal-hcaptcha.<...>") but keep getting "Verification failed. Please retry later.". Interestingly, passing the url on the command line suppresses the "Verify to continue messaging" on startup but still gives the message "Verification failed. Please retry later." Re-running signal-desktop without the URL continues to prompt for captcha verification.
