Feature Request Description

Allow image, once selected and maximized within the chat window, to be zoomed in on further. This action would preferably be hooked to the both the mouse scroll wheel and zoom buttons.

This should also solve #3020 without messiness of involving external programs

Or for the wheel-less and impatient: clicking on the image with a magnifying glass cursor, WhatsApp-style. Otherwise there's no point in having an X in the upper-right corner if clicking on the image itself simply exits the gallery.

This is the only feature I miss from the WhatsApp app. It'd be great to get this into Signal.

In fact it is not very handy if you want to see a detail of a picture.

At first you don't even notice that the image has a bigger size since this is not shown anywhere. And then you have to download the image, go to the download folder and open it with your picture viewer in order to be able to zoom in.

Latest beta release ( https://github.com/signalapp/Signal-Desktop/releases/tag/v5.18.0-beta.1 ) says "We heard you like to zoom in on images. We added oomph to your zoom, so even small images can go all the way full screen."
Is it covering this issue?

Not sure. This sounds like you can go full screen for smaller images. But can you go further with bigger ones?
