Bug Description

Signal Desktop loads 1000+ messages upon startup, which takes around 60 seconds every time.

If it's left open and the computer is put in a sleep state, upon resuming from sleep signal desktop only loads new messages and is more or less usable right away.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Close signal desktop
  2. Verify process is closed in task manager
  3. Start signal desktop

Actual Result:
Signal desktop app loads what seems like all of the messages on my account every time it starts.

Expected Result:

Signal only loads new messages.

In most cases, a log from your other devices is also useful:

First, we've got an issue tracking startup performance improvements, so duplicating to that: #3010

Second, one confusing bit here is that the message counter you see applies to messages your devices send to each other, or that your contacts devices send to you (read/delivery receipts). We don't re-download messages - we are downloading new messages every time unless there's some sort of bug in our local processing. And I didn't see any indication of re-processing/re-downloading in your log.

My signal instance definitely downloads messages more than once. I used the desktop last week and it downloaded more than 780 messages. I definitely did not send this many messages in the past week.

Please read my comment above. It's entirely expected to see a higher number there than the messages you see in the app. I'm going to lock this issue so people enter new bugs.
