difference between primary secondary and accent?

Having trouble figuring out what color goes where. Usually primary is your main color while secondary is a gray color, so what is accent in this context? I thought primary and accent were synonymous. Also not sure what to use for component backgrounds like a navbar or a component with another layer of a background in it.
