This comment here explains how kpcli doesn't support XML in a *.key file.
If you happen to want to use kpcli and you already created your KeePass database and key with a version of KeePass that supports XML it will have generated an XML *.key file and you won't be able to use the kpcli.
alecsammon/kpcli#2 (comment) This comment shows you how to recover from that weird issue so you can get back to using KeePass either in the terminal with kpcli or in a GUI like MacPass or KeePassX. 💯
