I've updated this with a package.json and modernized a bit in my fork: https://github.com/trentm/Socket.io-node-client/

Would you consider integrating my changes and publishing to npm? Let me know.

One current thing I'm not entirely happy with: I have a copy of socket.io's "utils.js" in my fork. See the "TODO.txt" in my fork for details. Would be nice to be able to require the one from socket.io directly.

However, that could be overcome later.
