From 7177a9d3a66cca55d6bc31c6c9aecd94fb58c39f Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001 From: adonheis Date: Tue, 27 Oct 2026 14:39:53 -0400 Subject: [PATCH 1/4] fix(langgraph): adopt NeMo 0.24 and /v1/checks in guardrailed agent (RHAIENG-7849) RHOAI 3.6 ships NeMo Guardrails 0.24.0.dev0. The example pinned 0.21.0, and its nemoguard actions.py imported content_safety_check_output_mapping, which 0.24 removed, so the 3.6 server silently skipped the file and dropped the topic-policy rail and the account-id PII carve-out. - Pin nemoguardrails[server]==0.24.0, the closest public release - Migrate the content-safety wrappers to RailOutcome, fail closed on an unparseable classifier verdict (0.24 raises where 0.21 blocked), and delete the 0.21 compatibility code - Add /v1/checks tests (local and QG4) and docs - Remove the FMS Guardrails Orchestrator comparison from docs/guardrails.md (RHAIENG-7850) - Document the pin/image API gap and an action-registration check Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 --- README.md | 2 +- .../examples/guardrailed_agent/README.md | 45 +- .../guardrails/config/nemoguard/actions.py | 156 ++++--- .../guardrails/generate_config.py | 25 +- .../examples/guardrailed_agent/main.py | 8 +- .../examples/guardrailed_agent/pyproject.toml | 5 +- .../guardrailed_agent/tests/conftest.py | 81 +++- .../tests/guardrails_client.py | 2 + .../integration/test_guardrails_cluster.py | 35 ++ .../tests/test_generate_config.py | 416 +++++++++--------- .../tests/test_guardrails.py | 46 +- .../tests/test_packaging_config.py | 8 +- .../examples/guardrailed_agent/uv.lock | 125 +++++- docs/guardrails.md | 98 +++-- 14 files changed, 673 insertions(+), 379 deletions(-) diff --git a/README.md b/README.md index 09c6f0e0..a693f8b9 100644 --- a/README.md +++ b/README.md @@ -149,7 +149,7 @@ See `tests/behavioral/` for full details. - [OpenShift Deployment](./docs/openshift-deployment.md) — Helm-based deployment guide - [Adding a New Agent](./docs/adding-a-new-agent.md) — How to contribute a new agent template - [Adding Behavioral Tests](./docs/adding-behavioral-tests.md) — How to add test coverage for an agent -- [Guardrails](./docs/guardrails.md) — Adding safety rails to agents (NeMo Guardrails vs Guardrails Orchestrator) +- [Guardrails](./docs/guardrails.md) — Adding safety rails to agents with NeMo Guardrails - [llm-d Deployment](./docs/llm-d-deployment.md) — Deploy llm-d for intelligent LLM inference routing on OpenShift AI ## Claude Code Skills diff --git a/agents/langgraph/examples/guardrailed_agent/README.md b/agents/langgraph/examples/guardrailed_agent/README.md index d683cd11..4878b20c 100644 --- a/agents/langgraph/examples/guardrailed_agent/README.md +++ b/agents/langgraph/examples/guardrailed_agent/README.md @@ -86,7 +86,7 @@ LLM response **Use a different model per layer** — each of the 3 model roles (`main`, `content_safety`, `topic_control`) can be pointed at its own model/endpoint/key/engine via `.env` overrides: `MAIN_MODEL_ID`/`MAIN_LLM_BASE_URL`/`MAIN_API_KEY`/`MAIN_MODEL_ENGINE`, `CONTENT_SAFETY_MODEL_ID`/`CONTENT_SAFETY_LLM_BASE_URL`/`CONTENT_SAFETY_API_KEY`/`CONTENT_SAFETY_MODEL_ENGINE`, and the `TOPIC_CONTROL_*` equivalents (see `.env.example`). supported guardrails path on RHOAI 3.6. ## Guardrailed Agent Example @@ -20,57 +20,83 @@ See the [example README](../agents/langgraph/examples/guardrailed_agent/README.m --- -## NeMo Guardrails vs Guardrails Orchestrator +## How NeMo Guardrails fits -Two guardrails systems are available on Red Hat OpenShift AI. Both are managed by the TrustyAI Operator. +NeMo Guardrails (NVIDIA, Apache 2.0) is deployed on Red Hat OpenShift AI by the TrustyAI Operator through a `NemoGuardrails` custom resource. The operator runs the NeMo Guardrails server as its own pod, loads rail configurations from ConfigMaps, and exposes an OpenAI-compatible API. -> **Note:** The FMS Guardrails Orchestrator is **legacy** and will be deprecated in a future version of RHOAI. Use NeMo Guardrails for new deployments. See the [RHOAI guardrails docs](https://docs.redhat.com/en/documentation/red_hat_openshift_ai_self-managed/latest/html/enabling_ai_safety_with_guardrails/enabling-ai-safety-with-guardrails_safety) for details. +- **Proxy pattern** — point the agent's `BASE_URL` at the guardrails server instead of the model. The server runs input rails, calls the model on `/v1/chat/completions`, runs output rails, and returns the response. The agent only needs to handle the refusal for a blocked request. +- **Rail types** — input, output, dialog, retrieval, and execution rails cover the request lifecycle. The example uses input and output rails. +- **Detection** — built-in rails (regex, self check, content safety, topic control), NVIDIA NemoGuard NIM classifiers, and custom Python actions (`@action` decorator) that run inside the server pod. +- **Colang** — rail flows and dialog policies (topic boundaries, multi-turn flows) are written in Colang. +- **Observability** — per-rail OpenTelemetry spans; see the example README's [rail-level tracing](../agents/langgraph/examples/guardrailed_agent/README.md#rail-level-tracing-opentelemetry) section. -### Recommendation +RHOAI 3.6 ships its own NeMo Guardrails build (`0.24.0.dev0`), and the example pins `nemoguardrails==0.24.0`, the closest public release, for local development. The two are not API-identical, so verify custom actions on the cluster (step 4 below). -**Use NeMo Guardrails** for new agent deployments. It works as a transparent proxy — point your agent's `BASE_URL` at it, add error handling for blocked requests, and you're done. Supports content safety, topic boundaries, dialogue flow control, PII detection, and per-rail OpenTelemetry tracing. +## Deploy, configure, and verify -The Guardrails Orchestrator remains available for existing deployments that rely on external Hugging Face detector models or standalone content checks, but new projects should use NeMo Guardrails. +The example's [Deploying to OpenShift AI](../agents/langgraph/examples/guardrailed_agent/README.md#deploying-to-openshift-ai) section covers the full flow, including the NVIDIA API key and model settings. No live caller passes it today (the Colang flows pass only model_name; /v1/checks goes through generate_async), but the wrapper forwarded the kwarg while ignoring it for the carve-out, so a future flow could get a block decision keyed off the wrong text. Guarded by a parametrized precedence test (both directions). - The pyproject.toml and test_packaging_config.py pin comments claimed the ==0.24.0 pin 'matches' the RHOAI 3.6 container (0.24.0.dev0) and that 'local behavior mirrors the cluster'. The PR itself documents the opposite (RailOutcome.failure() passed locally and raised on the cluster). Comments now state closest-public-release / not API-identical and point at the README registration check. --- .../guardrails/config/nemoguard/actions.py | 4 +- .../examples/guardrailed_agent/pyproject.toml | 2 +- .../tests/test_generate_config.py | 46 ++++++++++++++++++- .../tests/test_packaging_config.py | 8 ++-- 4 files changed, 53 insertions(+), 7 deletions(-) diff --git a/agents/langgraph/examples/guardrailed_agent/guardrails/config/nemoguard/actions.py b/agents/langgraph/examples/guardrailed_agent/guardrails/config/nemoguard/actions.py index 52629d0d..ace96809 100644 --- a/agents/langgraph/examples/guardrailed_agent/guardrails/config/nemoguard/actions.py +++ b/agents/langgraph/examples/guardrailed_agent/guardrails/config/nemoguard/actions.py @@ -177,7 +177,9 @@ async def _guarded_content_safety_check( metadata={"policy_violations": []}, ) - user_text = (context or {}).get("user_message") or "" + # Resolve user text with the same precedence as the library action we + # wrap: an explicit ``user_message`` argument wins over ``context``. + user_text = kwargs.get("user_message") or (context or {}).get("user_message") or "" violations = outcome.metadata.get("policy_violations") or [] if outcome.is_blocked and _is_banking_pii_false_positive( user_text, violations, for_output=for_output diff --git a/agents/langgraph/examples/guardrailed_agent/pyproject.toml b/agents/langgraph/examples/guardrailed_agent/pyproject.toml index 7de3f1fb..06ba5b2b 100644 --- a/agents/langgraph/examples/guardrailed_agent/pyproject.toml +++ b/agents/langgraph/examples/guardrailed_agent/pyproject.toml @@ -31,7 +31,7 @@ dev = [ "pyyaml>=6.0", ] guardrails = [ - "nemoguardrails[server]==0.24.0", # pinned to match RHOAI 3.6 container (0.24.0.dev0) + "nemoguardrails[server]==0.24.0", # closest public release to the RHOAI 3.6 container's build (0.24.0.dev0); These run against the public `nemoguardrails` release from the `guardrails` extra, not the RHOAI container's fork build, so they pin the block contract locally; cluster behavior is still covered by `make test-integration`. ### Guardrails behavior (local profile) @@ -471,6 +471,7 @@ curl http://localhost:8000/health | `guardrails/config/{local,nemoguard}/config.yaml` | Runtime configs (gitignored, generated by `make guardrails-server-{local,nemoguard}` from `.env` values) | | `tests/test_guardrails.py` | Live rail behavior tests against the proxy (toxic/off-topic blocked, banking/greeting allowed, `guardrails.config_id`, `/v1/checks` statuses) | | `tests/test_guardrails_smoke.py` | Offline `RailsConfig`/`LLMRails` load smoke tests for both profiles | +| `tests/test_output_rails.py` | Offline nemoguard output-rail tests against a stub model server (`/v1/checks` output block/pass, streaming block error) | | `tests/integration/` | Cluster deploy health + optional cluster guardrails behavior (`GUARDRAILS_INTEGRATION_URL`) | **Key constraints:** diff --git a/agents/langgraph/examples/guardrailed_agent/tests/guardrails_profiles.py b/agents/langgraph/examples/guardrailed_agent/tests/guardrails_profiles.py new file mode 100644 index 00000000..7b49f166 --- /dev/null +++ b/agents/langgraph/examples/guardrailed_agent/tests/guardrails_profiles.py @@ -0,0 +1,67 @@ +"""Builds a guardrails profile's runtime config.yaml for offline tests. + +Copies ``guardrails/config/`` into a temp dir and runs +``generate_config.py`` on its ``config.yaml.example`` with fixed test env, +so tests never depend on a developer's generated (gitignored) config.yaml. +""" + +from __future__ import annotations + +import importlib.util +import shutil +from pathlib import Path + +import pytest + +AGENT_DIR = Path(__file__).resolve().parents[1] +CONFIG_DIR = AGENT_DIR / "guardrails" / "config" +_SCRIPT_PATH = AGENT_DIR / "guardrails" / "generate_config.py" + +_spec = importlib.util.spec_from_file_location("generate_config", _SCRIPT_PATH) +generate_config = importlib.util.module_from_spec(_spec) +_spec.loader.exec_module(generate_config) + +GUARDRAILS_ENV_VARS = [ + f"{prefix}_{suffix}" + for prefix in generate_config._ROLE_ENV_PREFIX.values() + for suffix in ("MODEL_ID", "LLM_BASE_URL", "API_KEY", "MODEL_ENGINE") +] + [ + "MODEL_ID", + "LLM_BASE_URL", + "API_KEY", + "TOPIC_CONTROL_CUSTOM_POLICY", + "GUARDRAILS_TRACING_ENABLED", +] + + +def clear_guardrails_env(monkeypatch: pytest.MonkeyPatch) -> None: + """Unset every env var generate_config reads, so ambient shell values + (e.g. from ``source .env``) can't leak into a generated config.""" + for var in GUARDRAILS_ENV_VARS: + monkeypatch.delenv(var, raising=False) + + +def build_profile( + dest_root: Path, + profile: str, + monkeypatch: pytest.MonkeyPatch, + *, + model_id: str, + base_url: str, + **env: str, +) -> Path: + """Copy ``profile`` under ``dest_root``, generate its config.yaml from the + example template, and return the copied profile dir.
