Async版が動かなかったのはシンプルな実装ミスだったっぽいです
adamhathcock/sharpcompress#1310
普通にusing忘れてたから解放してなかったのもあるけど、それを書いたとて動いていなかったのは事実... （なんか治ったみたいで安心？SharpCompressのバージョンが上がったらAsyncに戻します！）
